'Confusion' though...

Mark G, Friday, 3 April 2009 11:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Best song = Confusion, most representative / evocative of said film and slightly dodgy era (and my Winona Ryder obsessin) = stay

Ant, Friday, 3 April 2009 11:40 (fifteen years ago) link

(& #2 = Trammps.)

xhuxk, Friday, 3 April 2009 12:48 (fifteen years ago) link

oh god i forgot about the reggae version of "Baby, I Love Your Way"! why was that on this!?

like a ringtone cowboy (some dude), Friday, 3 April 2009 12:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Doesn't one of the characters sing a snatch of this song?

Mark G, Friday, 3 April 2009 13:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess, i dunno. it's still funny to me that even though this soundtrack's big legacy is alt-rock and lisa loeb and lol my sharona, one of its biggest hits is an awful cheeseball reggae cover of Peter Frampton.

I like the Crowded House tune.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 3 April 2009 13:08 (fifteen years ago) link

"Add It Up" - Ethan Hawke (Violent Femmes cover)

My most vivid and hated memory of this trivial film.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 3 April 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i have undying spite for 'my sharona' but i'm sure ethan hawke's contributions are even worse.

i'm gonna vote for juliana. just ahead of new order.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 3 April 2009 13:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Morbius otm

altho I remember thinking Garofalo was good in it, and Stiller bearable.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 3 April 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Screw it, I'll cop to loving the U2 song. One of the few of theirs that I still unabashedly love.

wasn't Steve Zahn supposed to be gay? If so, it was handled so lamely.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 3 April 2009 13:36 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, it was 1993 (?) after all.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 3 April 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

PFLAG, I'm beginning to like the sound of that.

eight years pass...

On the vileness of the Frampton cover.

Yup

Modern Zounds in Undiscovered Country (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 November 2017 02:44 (seven years ago) link

Was disappointed you didn't mention but don't/whoa no no!/hesitate/la dee da! For me at least, that's where the song crosses the line from blandly infuriating to I want to fly up to the ceiling of this grocery store and punch the speakers. Also the original Frampton song wasn't reggae as far as I can tell.

Ethan Hawke should have pointed this out in the movie

Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:06 (two years ago) link

For whatever reason, the Tribeca Film Festival revived the movie a few years ago and tried to sell it as some kind of generational touchstone, but it seemed like an enormously dubious argument and the soundtrack seems to reflect that.

birdistheword, Friday, 30 December 2022 18:16 (two years ago) link

When the New Beverly in Los Angeles screened this a few years ago, I believe both showings sold out. The audience of at least one of them did an impromptu sing-along of “Stay” during the credits

I haven’t seen it in years, but I remember it being very silly. I love the ridiculous scene where people praise the awful, navel-gazing documentary that Ryder’s character is working on

beamish13, Friday, 30 December 2022 18:46 (two years ago) link

Ah well, maybe I should see it again? I was NOT a fan, but that was a while ago. I do remember liking Ryder and Hawke, they made something out of roles that could've easily been risible.

birdistheword, Friday, 30 December 2022 19:11 (two years ago) link

No, you shouldn't.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 December 2022 19:16 (two years ago) link

I remember loathing this film when it came out. That may have been my first "get off my lawn" moment.

The soundtrack is not bad. A little predictable.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 30 December 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link

U2 should definitely be 2nd place, and i'd like a word with the ethan hawke voter
