Damn, this is hard. Star Sign or Alcoholiday, I guess.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 4 April 2009 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

december, I think

Alcoholiday no question.

President Keyes, Saturday, 4 April 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

I blindly bought this and Loveless on the same fateful day (on cassette, even!) at the tail end of 1991.

xpost: that is hard to argue with, and I will vote for The Concept, but I'd like to put in a good word for What You Do to Me as an A+ pop single with no verses!

argh, did not mean to italicize song titles.

STAR SIGN

bombinthebeehive, Saturday, 4 April 2009 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

Alcoholiday, December, Star Sign, Is This Music, and Metal Baby have been my favourite songs from this album at one time or another ... I think I'll pick one of the weepies, though.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 4 April 2009 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

listening to this just yesterday. has to be 'the concept'

Michael B, Saturday, 4 April 2009 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

I'm voting "The Concept" as well, but it's amazing how well the rest of the album holds up after that brilliant start.

Alcoholiday

"Alcoholiday", ahead of "Star Sign" and "The Concept". "Alcoholiday": is it corny? I dunno, it meant a hell of a lot to me as a teenager ambiguous about many things. It still sounds great: a melodic drone with great harmonies, nice use of feedback.

(Alcoholiday) still sounds great: a melodic drone with great harmonies, nice use of feedback.

And a great song title.

"I Don't Know", no contest.

"Star Sign" 4 me

I just ripped this to my iTunes & am listening for the first time in ages. It sounds absolutely fantastic! As much as I still love "The Concept," I wish I could change my vote to "December" or "I Don't Know." "Star Sign" wouldn't sound at all out of place on Ride's Going Blank Again.

(Alcoholiday) still sounds great: a melodic drone with great harmonies, nice use of feedback.

And a great song title.

I've never researched this, but I always thought this was a nod to the fact that the Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies album had songs titled: "Alcohol" and "Holiday."

Alcoholiday

billstevejim, Sunday, 5 April 2009 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

Another vote for Alcoholiday. I revisited this album recently for the first time in many years and it blew me away. Unlike, uh, most of the rest of it, actually - the singles are still great, but on the whole it was a strangely disappointing experience
