the reason that led zep IV and london calling seem to bookend the 70s (not that they're alone in that) isn't just sales or hooks or fans, it's that there's a narrative of significance attached to each.

--contenderizer in the what is the canonical rock album of the decade? thread.

kid a & mpp i think will bookend the naughts (aka the neo-70s) in pretty much this same way, if not even more prominent than the way zep and the clash...in the 70s there were other choices for both sides of the 70s (for instance, paranoid & metal box)

naughts = aughties????

"Kid A" is completely unimportant as a 00s album outside of ILM. In the real world "The Bends" and "OK Computer" are seem as the definitive masterpieces by that archetypical 90s band.

I would rather pick "The Soft Bulletin" although I realize it is from 1999. That album represents very much of what indie rock (indie pop) in the 00s has been about.

As for 2009, the year is still young, and I am pretty sure something with a more obvious mainstream appeal than MPP will come to dominate the year more.

I don't even like Radiohead and this is completely wtf

lol these two terrible albums will not bookend this decade for anyone with halfway decent taste

really hate when people try to create these sweeping narratives out of nowhere - Kid A and MPP are totally meaningless to me and a ton of other music fans.

lex pretend, Sunday, 5 April 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

so in other words, you find this poll v. v. annoying...you might not be the only one...

fwiw, i like both these albums a whole lot...'out of nowhere' or not, i don't think it's offbase that both these albums are shoo-ins for top 5 on most end-of-decade lists...i mean, cmon it's practically preordained that this is 1 & 2 on Pitchfork's Best Albums of the 00s...the only question left is which is #1 and which is #2...

a lot of people on here seem to be allergic to MPP's hype, but I think it kind of lives up to it...my exposure to AC is very limited (I'd heard I think two songs before yesterday, plus Bros), so I can't say whether they sold out or not...but this album shows great potential for keeping me sane in the months ahead, and for the time being that's about all I can ask of music...

if Loveless is Pet Sounds merging with Metal Machine Music (this is Trouser Press, but their server's down or something, so I can't link to it...) then I think MPP definitely could be Pet Sounds merging with King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown...

I Don't see why MPP is any more significant than any other Animal Collective release.

I don't think art rock is what defines this decade.

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 April 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

And one thing this decade proved is that rock is really dead, all it can do anymore is recycle its own past.

This thread might have been OK if it hadn't been a poll.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this poll is a bit of a joke...wuz sincere about mpp's potential to keep me sane in the oncoming months, but all the stuff about narrative and significance is kind of tongue in cheek...this is pretty much a safe place to dump all over either or both of these albums (and well done on that front)...
