born again, duh

鬼の手 (Edward III), Monday, 6 April 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

this should be a shutout.

Bill Magill, Monday, 6 April 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

you never know with ilx.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 6 April 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

you can bet there's Tony Martin fans on ILM.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 6 April 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

Born Again will take 100% of these because it's indisputably the best one. And I own all of the above.

There are great riffs on those other albums, but not really any whole great songs IMO. It's too bad.

Nate Carson, Monday, 6 April 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

Fancy a Born Again live tour reformation? ;)
They could do Reading Festival for old times sake!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 6 April 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

This is now the top Google hit for "duh". I had to go look on my CD shelf to prove to myself that I'd even heard of Cross Purposes and Forbidden before, but sure enough, there they are.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

The Tony Martin albums have their moments...I'm not a huge fan of that era, but it would make for a good compilation.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

I've never heard any of these albums - am interested cos the AMG review of Born Again completely trashes it - "dreadful", "one of heavy metal's all-time greatest disappointments" etc - in stark contradiction to this thread!

Or are the other albums just even worse?

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:33 (sixteen years ago)

No, Born Again is actually a great album. The rest are crap. You can disregard allmusic in this instance.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)

BORN 'GAIN

THE GROUND WAS IN MY SKYYYYYY

Running same poll over on http://www.foreverdoomed.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=9617&start=0 if you want to compare.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

Born Again looks like running away with it there too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

That allmusic review is garbage. 100% wrong.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

AMG is right about Born Again's production, however. It's a testament to how good the music is that it transcends the mix. The 1996 remaster helped a little, but not as much as you'd hope.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and the cover is awful, so that's another thing AMG is right about. 80% wrong at most, then.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

haa I think the cover is kind of awesome (i don't think i've heard anything off this other than "Trashed")

again recommending the born again demos, incomplete but the sound quality is SO MUCH BETTER than the album.

cut-off jeans, skinnydipping, and "getting weird" (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

hey dudes check it:

looks like all the "unmixed demos" are here

Forget Dio - Born Again's my favourite post-Ozzy rec, period.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

the demo version of "zero the hero" is great

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

bump

ok you guys were right, a runaway winner.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 13 April 2009 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

... who voted for the other albums?

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Monday, 13 April 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

Born Again might have fared better with a better mix as Trashed and Zero the Hero are pretty good tunes.

earlnash, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

fared better? it walked it!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

Anyone want to defend the album cover?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

I assume that's a no? Not even Scott?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

The cover's pretty awful. I think Sabbath's best cover was either Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Mob Rules. They also had some howlers like Paranoid, Sabotage and the one with Ice-T.

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 22 September 2019 22:25 (six years ago)

both top two vote getters here are indisputably the best of this lot, and I like Born Again as much or more than the two Dio albums. The others I don't remember a single thing about, I must have heard them butprobably only once.

akm, Monday, 23 September 2019 00:47 (six years ago)

the AMG review of Born Again is so incredibly wrong and off base it's like it comes from another universe.

akm, Monday, 23 September 2019 00:47 (six years ago)

Sorry but dio is not in the same league as Ozzy

calstars, Monday, 23 September 2019 01:40 (six years ago)

five years pass...

Just listened to Headless Cross for the first time ever. It's great...! I don't know much about metal in the '80s, but I like late '80s Swans and late '80s Jethro Tull and Headless Cross feels like the epic gloom of that era of Swans meeting the unabashed gnarly-guitar sorta-prog of that era of Tull... plus these soaring, breathy vocals about Satan and other creatures of the night. Too good

TheNuNuNu, Sunday, 27 July 2025 22:23 (two months ago)

Love this record. If you like it, the follow-up, Tyr, is definitely worth hearing, too

"Headless Cross" video is also an amazing time capsule if you haven't had the pleasure

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 27 July 2025 22:38 (two months ago)

Three songs into The Eternal Idol. This slays!

TheNuNuNu, Monday, 28 July 2025 14:08 (two months ago)

Maybe Tony Iommi can simply do no wrong? This dread-soaked guitar tone, these unstoppably catchy riffs, song after song after song... it's like they bring out the best in whoever happens to be singing along. (A theory that could potentially be debunked with a single listen to that superstar-guests Iommi solo album... or else proven)

TheNuNuNu, Monday, 28 July 2025 14:11 (two months ago)

I don't even particularly like operatic metal / hard rock vocals, yet here I am hanging on every Tony Martin scream to the heavens!

TheNuNuNu, Monday, 28 July 2025 14:15 (two months ago)

Tony Martin's the coolest.

Only Sab vocalist I don't really love is Glenn Hughes
