Disowned Cover Versions

I know of at least 3 instances of an artist recording a cover version at record label insistence, only to disown it later:

Lisa Germano - "These Boots Are Made For Walking" - Removed from the reissue of Happiness.

X - "All or Nothing" - Small Faces cover deleted from the original track order of Ain't Love Grand and moved to the end of the bonus tracks. (And really, if there's any cover X should disown, it's that bombastic overdoing of "Wild Thing" from the Major League soundtrack.)

Camper Van Beethoven - "Pictures of Matchstick Men" - I'm not sure if Camper actively disowned "Pictures," but I think they made it clear that it wasn't their idea to record it.

Any others?

What's the deal with 10,000 Maniacs' cover of "Peace Train"? I've read reviews that talk about this song, but my CD doesn't have it. Was there a Cat Stevens backlash that caused it to be removed?

I don't have In My Tribe on cd, but my cassette surely did have it (and it was really good, too).

From what I gather, Van Halen was never wild about all the covers Ted Templeman made them record. His stance was "if you do a cover, you're halfway to scoring a hit." I have to admit liking their Kinks covers, though.

+ their cover of "You're No Good" is pretty great as well.

The band pulled it off the record when Cat "Yusuf Islam" Stevens (actually, I guess that should be Steven Demetre "Cat 'Yusuf Islam' Stevens" Georgiou) made statements that seemed to support the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, although he said he had been misinterpreted.

Quiet Riot spoke in many interviews about recording "Cum On Feel The Noize" under duress.

I think Luna wasn't nuts about recording "Sweet Child O Mine" but the record company thought it could be a hit. And then they dropped them.

I don't know about the recording situation, but they certainly never disowned it, or at least DL didn't. It was a live staple through the Cracker years and during the CBV reunion era.

The Fever did a terrific version of Sheila E.'s "Glamorous Life" on their first EP but let it go soon after--wanted to be known for their own songs, logically enough. (Good songs, too--I should listen to that band again, it's been ages.)

I believe Lily Allen didn't want to do OMG, and rather would have done 'no-one knows' instead.

It was Jericho, a short-lived Sire subsidiary.
