BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

Every time I think I'm bored with JD I put this on and they're my favorite band again for a couple weeks.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

My first instinct is "Disorder" just for the opening seconds with the feedback and the bass that sounds like it's scraping the roof of the 4th level of hell.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

But "These Days" and "Atmosphere" are so fuckin cool

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

This fucking album

I am using your worlds, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

so hard, must relisten

I am using your worlds, Monday, 13 April 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

ppl bitch about the "disco sounds" on "insight" but i think they're pretty dope

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 April 2009 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

day of the lords for sure. it's absolutely explosive here.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

Okay you know what's funny? Here's like pretty much my fave band in the world and even though I own this, I've never played it. I was talking to a fellow New Order fan recently and we shared a similar plight - an overdose on JD gigs. In my teenage years I collected all kinds of gigs of them but I overdid it and I don't appreciate JD so much now in a live setting. The ULU gig included with the recent Closer reissue being a noteable exception.

Oh well. I'm going to put this into my iTunes anyway and onto my iPod and see how I feel about it.

Take The Gothheads Bowling (Bimble), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 07:23 (seventeen years ago)

God, leave it to ILXOrs to have me playing JD live at 1 AM.

Group hug. Now.

Haha the keyboards really suck ass on Love Will Tear Us Apart, though.

Playing Insight now, one of my all time fave JD songs. What is this about disco sounds? Yeah, man, I agree those keyboard sounds are determined to send us straight into outer space but I think to call them "disco" is kindof out of line. No offense. :)

Let's go to a planetarium together and listen to this and hold hands.

Take The Gothheads Bowling (Bimble), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

I agree the version of These Days here is particularly good.

Take The Gothheads Bowling (Bimble), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

These Days. So much more muscular without that effect they used on the 45. that said, atmosphere is thrilling too because it clarifies the bassline that makes the whole thing hang together.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

dead souls, it is from the eindhoven gig though. probably my fave song by theirs and this version is rawer and rougher than the one from still.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

it's tempting to go for "A Means To An End" for the Stipe-like vocals, though maybe that's putting the cart before the horse. My default choice would be "Transmission" though (the drums as the song closes sound magnificent), or "Disorder" for how it gets your attention when you put this thing on, a great mission statement for what you're getting into. Ah, I'll just go with "A Means To An End".

Lesbian douches?

Shadowplay owns on this

wilter, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Shadowplay is especially good, here. Version of Dead Souls doesn't do anything special for me, though.

Take The Gothheads Bowling (Bimble), Thursday, 16 April 2009 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

Very, very surprised to see 'Atrocity Exhibition' go voteless.

Millsner, Thursday, 16 April 2009 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

eleven months pass...

This has been out of print (in the UK at least) for ages but I managed to find a second hand copy today. Really excited to give it a spin. Ended up paying £12 for it. The completist in me wants to track down the suposedly inferior Preston CD now but its quite expensive too. I'm under the assumption that the Paris show is hands down the best out of the two, correct?

AnotherDeadHero, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

Oh well, my questions as to the greatness of 'Les Bains Douches' were answered loud and clear within the first few seconds of 'Disorder'. Never have I head it explode out the speakers with such force and clarity.

AnotherDeadHero, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

My first instinct is "Disorder" just for the opening seconds with the feedback and the bass that sounds like it's scraping the roof of the 4th level of hell.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, April 13, 2009 10:42 AM

Exactly. It's sounds so bloody fierce on this record.

King of Snake (j-rock), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

the Paris show is hands down the best out of the two, correct?

Correct, but you still need the Preston version of The Eternal.

StanM, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

This is my favorite Joy Division release. I just can't listen to the neutered studio versions anymore.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

This thread being revived reminds me that I must go and listen to this again immediately

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

this blog put together a better sounding and more complete version of Les Bains than the official release: http://thepowerofindependenttrucking.blogspot.com/2009/12/radio-live-transmission-joy-division.html

city worker, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen a lot of nice Joy Division & New Order related stuff on that blog I would like to hear - but I always get put off because the FLAC files are so large, kinda wish some of this stuff was regular MP3

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

Damn that blog. It's too good. Downloaded a dubby sounding New Order set from there the other week. Majestic!

AnotherDeadHero, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i always hesitate about dl-ing huge-ass flac files, because space is at a premium on my laptop ... that JD live thing does look awesome though ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

I always wanted someone to compile a live best of from all the various live albums, which would be: this one / Still / Preston / the one from the box set / the two bonus discs from the latest reissues. I think that's it. I'd do it but they all felt like they suffered from poor sound quality.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

You could certainly think of the Peel sessions as "live" takes of the songs. But that may be a different animal altogether.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

No, radio sessions are a beast unto themselves. I always try to snag radio sessions for my favorite artists and a good mate of mine swears the Peel version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is superior to the studio version.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yes the Peel LWTUA is the best version - Steve Morris's drumming is brilliant and pushes it forward relentlessly. It's essentially a rawer take of the 'other' version on the flipside of teh 12".

I didn't know about this poll, but would have voted for Shadowplay - brutal! The Preston gig is pretty essential as a snapshot of cackhanded gig arrangements from back in the day. The bass amp breaks, there's an announcement over the p.a half way through the set of 'last bus for Burnley leaves in 5 mins' (or something similar). It's chaotic.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:28 (sixteen years ago)

you can always download the FLAC and transcode it to mp3...

it is just like an unknown puzzle till the end of the world (dyao), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

Ah, Bimbs. :)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

I would've voted for "shadowplay" too. love it.

this has prob been most my listened to JD record for the last few years or so.

original bgm, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

speaking of live JD, has anyone heard this reissue of the 1980 Amsterdam show? Sound quality? worth purchasing?

Yorsh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

That gig was on Dutch Radio I think and has been widely bootlegged. Quality should be Ok. I have it somewhere and will check if you like.

Dr.C, Thursday, 25 March 2010 12:37 (sixteen years ago)

damn day of the lord absolutely slays on here
