it's more about the context of your own taste. For example, there's no reason on earth why anyone SHOULDN'T like, say, Neneh Cherry, but when the majority of the rest of your music collection is comprised of angry white boys with guitars who hate the world, it's a bit incongruous.

I think my music taste is by its own nature spotty and incongruous with itself, and there pretty much is no music that I would like "by definition" let alone any that I would dislike for the opposite reason.

with a cursory glance over my records I'd say Bread sticks out like a sore thumb, but i definitely like other soft stuff from the era so...

Something I love but is incongruous with my tastes: Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection. I normally can't stand the guy, especially the shit you hear on the radio, but that album is awesome.

i like some other Elton stuff, mostly a little from the one before TC & the 2 or so after it, but yeah that's the pinnacle

At some point I just gave up on the idea that one can, not to mention should, have a coherent aesthetic wrt to art(s). Just due to the very random nature of one's experiences, such an aesthetic would have to be highly artificial and arbitrary and to limit oneself to sounds or performances or postures based on what sounds safe or readily understandable or whatever, is simply not the way that I experience music, especially.

Actually, it strikes me that the choices on this thread may be regarded as more genuinely guilty pleasures than the choices on all the other so-called "guilty pleasure" threads. 'Cause you know somebody always points out that you shouldn't feel guilty for liking what you like in defiance of some imaginary rules, because there ARE no rules.

Prince - Because I'm very very white, have no use for dance music (though he's obviously so much more than that) and I can't think of a single post-'70s R&B artist that I own more than one album by. But I own nearly every Prince album.

I shouldn't like the Charlie Daniels Band because of all the bandleader represents. But much of his '70s output is good-to-great.

I generally don't like post-1970s trad-blooze, but I can groove to some Black Crowes.

The Jimmie Rodgers waaaaaaay in the back of my third row of records.

That's the best I could do but it comes with the caveat that I own a bunch of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash and some David Allen Coe.

A friend of mine once described me as "either loving or hating things with massive intensity and complete unpredictability" which I'm not sure is entirely accurate but probably explains why I can't think of anyone I do like who is incongruous to the rest of my taste.
