Horrible band name. Jesus.
Anyway, they manage to do all sorts of things that make me happy, including: combine Mclusky with Part Chimp; realize the recorded sound that Nice Strong Arm could never manage; actually get double drums to make sense on CD. That last one is really kind of amazing.
I want them to be funnier and catchier, but am coming around to the fact that on its own terms this is such a fun record.
And why are all the good noisy rock bands from the UK these days? I haven't heard a decent US group doing anything with loud guitars in god knows how long...
I'm hesitant to call it album of the year material, 'cause it does feel like a first album, but not sure that anything else will get my heart pounding quite the same way when played at max volume!

Oh, and "Infinity Milk" from this is almost surely a lock on my favorite song of the year, at the moment.
― dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:54 (seventeen years ago)
didn't much like their first couple of singles but the more recent stuff is a big step forward imo. will probably end up getting the album sooner or later

not really a fan.
― Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 01:08 (seventeen years ago)
are u meant to say the name like the batman theme song?
― wilter, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 01:13 (seventeen years ago)
^haha well i like to
― lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 01:14 (seventeen years ago)
I've been doing it like Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye or like Blue Moon, as the mood strikes.
― dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)
Ha ha, as it turns out they chant the band name at the start of "Watch This," so now I know how to say it. It took me a while to figure out what they were saying!
― dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 13:00 (seventeen years ago)
I have one EP of theirs that I picked up a couple of years ago (the only song title I remember is "Totally Bones"), and I really dug it - reminded me a lot of Q and Not U.
― Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 13:35 (seventeen years ago)
Interest suddenly piqued by Nice Strong Arm comparison.
― The Unbearable Skegness of Being (NickB), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 13:40 (seventeen years ago)
They're a lot of fun live, too: genuinely entertaining bits of showmanship and gimmickry similar to Les Savy Fav or The Mae Shi, excpt better because it's all done in thick scottish accents and you're not likely to get a large bearded man's groin repeatedly thrust into your face.
― robobor, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 13:40 (seventeen years ago)
Okay, I actually really like these guys! They scratch some sort of itch that I was never really aware I even had.

the singer is annoying.
― Zeno, Friday, 17 April 2009 13:29 (seventeen years ago)
sort of music that feels alright only if youre under a certain age, i'm above that age, for sure.
― Zeno, Friday, 17 April 2009 13:38 (seventeen years ago)
Ehh, I don't think the age thing is true, although I understand what yr getting at - I like them although it certainly isn't luv. Seeing as we're all just naming chocolate bars American (sounding) indie bands, they sound more like Superchunk to me
― National Lampoon's Minimal House (DJ Mencap), Friday, 17 April 2009 13:55 (seventeen years ago)
damn, this thing is all over the place. some songs (the more pavement-y, superchunk-y) i can get with, other ones are bordering on nu-hardcore terribleness
― (ooo)genesis (k3vin k.), Friday, 17 April 2009 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
i like this band, but i wonder why UK is stepping up with all these Part Chimp/Mclusky/Shooting At Unarmed Men bands and why the USA never really takes notice...
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 17 April 2009 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
It's unfortunate. McLusky were pretty much my favorite band & i never even got to see them live. As for Dananananaykroyd, they remind me of Help She Can't Swim. Lots of love for "Chrome Rainbow".
― myndbloom, Friday, 17 April 2009 14:56 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, "Chrome Rainbow" is probably my early favorite.

the unforutnate name choice?
― (ooo)genesis (k3vin k.), Friday, 17 April 2009 15:04 (seventeen years ago)
heh, that too.
― myndbloom, Friday, 17 April 2009 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
Jesus, I popped "Dananananaykroyd" into last.fm and created a station, and there are like a billion UK bands working the noise-pop/rock spectrum and doing decent stuff. Seriously, what the hell: when did the US just give up on this territory? It's like 80's Homestead/SST relocated to the UK quietly...
― dlp9001, Saturday, 18 April 2009 18:25 (seventeen years ago)
Forgotten progenitor of a lot of this UK noise stuff: Ligament. They were good.

Quite a few friends have recommended these guys to me. I'll give them a good listen, but initial forays have not been especially mindblowing. Late Of The Pier are the gold standard of new-new UK rock bands imo.
― Young Chizzy (country matters), Saturday, 18 April 2009 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
um, this Mclusky comparison is extremely unfair to overexcitable Mclusky fans imo
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:09 (seventeen years ago)
i'm an overexcitable McLusky fan & i just flat out don't expect anyone to match them at what they did.
― myndbloom, Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:25 (seventeen years ago)
well I expected something a bit better than Los Campesinos
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:30 (seventeen years ago)
^^too exciteable
A bit of Les Savy Fav in there, but a bit too Screamo for me.
― zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Monday, 20 April 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)
Big fan of the album here, loved the first couple of singles ("Some Dresses" especially), wasn't too bothered about the EP but the album is great. Still not manged to catch them live yet, work seems to keep getting in the way.
― MichaelJLambert, Monday, 20 April 2009 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
This keeps getting better and better, the Brits are kicking our asses when it comes to shouty, poppy indie rock.
