state trooper innit

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

State Trooper, cuz I know how it feels to have a corpse in the trunk and a glovebox full of crank & have a cop just follow you and follow you, even though they're probably only going to Shoney's or something.

for me it's between 'stolen car', 'state trooper' and 'racing in the streets'

Well, yeah, Thunder Road......
But it has to be Highway Patrolman

if we're meant to skip "Thunder Road", then "Pink Cadillac" over "Highway Patrolman" b/c it's more versatile, short in the front for business, long in the back for party. By which I mean the Nebraska demo and the b-side rock cut. I've come to really love Springsteen's awkward musings on sex.

Which five do you think are more or less the same song?

Mark, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

Where's "Tweeter and the Monkey Man"?

Driving in to Darlington County
Me and Wayne on the Fourth of July
Driving in to Darlington County
Looking for some work on the county line
We drove down from New York City
Where the girls are pretty but they just want to know your name
Driving in to Darlington City
Got a union connection with an uncle of Wayne's
We drove eight hundred miles without seeing a cop
We got rock and roll music blasting off the T-top singing

"Thunder Road". Though I miss "Darlington Country" here.

"racing in the street" -- a song that i find insanely corny and emotionally affecting all at once. guess that's the boss in a nutshell, right?

tylerw, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

"Stolen Car" (and "Hungry Heart," come to think of it) both presage a lot of the emotional doubt that crops up later in "Tunnel of Love." But I'm going for "Racing in the Streets" for sheer lump-in-throat power.

used cars/wreck on the highway/stolen car/drive all night

Yeah, interesting-- there is obv. some similarity, but it's a testament to how much Springsteen can do with a guy in a car, just how different the characters and circumstances in these songs are. T

Mark, Thursday, 16 April 2009 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, though you could devise quite a drinking game for springsteen albums/songs using road/highway/car imagery ... starts to seem a bit like a crutch for him.

tylerw, Thursday, 16 April 2009 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

A lot of his songs are a testament to what a guy can do with open G, open C, and Am chords, too. Deceptively simple, once he streamlined. Gets a lot of mileage (ha!) out of not much.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 April 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

i love a lot of these, voted "highway patrolman" just because. i've never seen the movie sean penn made out of it, is it any good?

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 April 2009 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

I found me a pretty car,
and I don't care about Mary no more.
Mister.

nice poll.

through the wind, through the rain, through the snow (repeat repeat repeat)

he could release a compilation of this and it would be awesome.

we only run for the money, got no strings attached. (probably the most fruitful time of his career right)

also pleasantly surprised by Highway 29, must've heard it before, but never realized it was so great.
