i for one applaud alfred's efforts at giving this fine, fine song its own thread
― zurück zum Traphaus (donna rouge), Friday, 17 April 2009 03:03 (seventeen years ago)
surely this could have been a "classic or ridiculously classic" thread. of course, the answer is ridiculously classic.
― pipecock, Friday, 17 April 2009 03:43 (seventeen years ago)
Seconding ridiculously classic. You've gotta have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me? Come on!

No romance. Without FINANCE.

yet it pales in comparison to Peanut Butter, Padlock, Seventh Heaven... the Levan mixes comp that came out last year is excellent

i mean, if you wanna get down to brass tacks, "it should have been you" is the best LL+GG joint. i'm gonna play that shit tomorrow night in fact.

Gwen Guthrie's first album, Portrait, and the Padlock mini LP have been in nearly nonstop rotation the last couple weeks.

Can anyone tell me anything about this album? Like I guess it's a compilation (though I cannot find a single other release w/ the title track on it) but a bunch of the tracks are remixed by Larry Levan?

I am going through her back catalog today. My thoughts are:
Gwen Guthrie (1983) - really solid trademark Sly & Robbie funk/r&b/disco classics, pt. 1Portrait (1983) - really solid trademark Sly & Robbie funk/r&b/disco classics, pt. 2Padlock (1985) - Larry Levan remixes of cuts from the first 2 albums, literally don't even talk to me abt Padlock, this is obviously one of the greatest albums of all time.Just for You (1985) - sharp change in direction, thin 80's production, has a few standout tracks but is ultimately fairly generic and unimpressiveGood to Go Lover (1986) - a marked improvement over Just for You. Still super 80's, fun, but not really as crucial as her first 3Lifeline (1988) - this one's even better than the last. It seems like she went suuuuper downhill with Just For You but then got better with each release.Hot Times (1990) - and we're backsliding again. This album is like all cheesy slow jams. This album is terrible, except for a small handful of okay-enough dance jamz at the end, but it's bizarrely backloaded, like they tried to scare everyone off before they got to the good stuff
Ranking them:1. Padlock 2. Portrait3. s/t4. Lifeline5. Good to Go Lover6. Just for You7. Hot Times
