Not a James Brown versus Bruce Springsteen thread, because, I mean, come on. I'm talking about their count-offs, pure and simple. They're similar in purpose, but very different in execution and style. James counts off, often frenetically, for the benefit of his band, Bruce counts off, often dramatically, to build up anticipation. Both are iconic in their own right, but which is more effective? Which is more iconic?

More iconic? Definitely James Brown. But for me, there's something in the drama of Bruce's countoffs that is more visceral, more gutteral. Where would "Born To Run" be without the countoff? It would be missing something huge. I don't think James Brown *needs* the countoffs for his music to work.
