Where might you look for a missing CD?

My CD copy of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon is missing; I have the case, which is in the right place, but not the disc. I've checked every CD player in the house (main hi-fi, head-fi, DVD player, iMac, bedroom stereo) and the car stereo. I've checked my carry case that takes 24 CDs at once and that I've not used in ages. I've checked my bag. I know it's not in my work PC. So where is it?

If you lose a CD (but still have the case) where do you look?

the bin as someone broke it and hopes you dont find it?
or
In another cd box?

inside cases of other CDs I've played in the last couple of days, underneath CD player/computer, magpie nests...

Our copy of Crooked Rain Crooked Rain went missing for AGES, case and all, and I'd filed it under M by mistake. But I can't have filed this wrong. I hope it's not in another CD's case - there's 2,000+ to look through!

Ask your girlfriend to tell you where she put it.

I HATE it when people put CDs inside the wrong cases. I used to have a room mate who did that with my CDs all the time & my gf does it occasionally. If you have many CDs (as I'm sure most of you do), it can take years for some of them to turn up.

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Saturday, 18 April 2009 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, I've been through this before. My sympathies, but it's probably in another CD case. Last time I was looking for a CD all around I found it underneath one corner of the sofa, in such a place that I didn't see it even though I had already looked under the sofa and behind it. Very irritating, and this sort of thing was one of my main reasons for caving in and getting an iPod. At least I haven't ever lost my iPod...yet...

Under the couch, behind the stereo or -- most ominously -- in my kids' room. If it's in there, chances are it's met an untimely demise.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 18 April 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

is there an Amber Alert for missing CDs?

I once found a disc in the wrong box over a year after I thought it disappeared forever. It was a delightful surprise, since the supposedly missing CD was the oop and very expensive to replace "Ask the Ages" (pre-fileshare days)

So yeah, do that. And check UNDER the discs that are already in their proper boxes. Ask the Ages showed up underneath The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. I'm sure those two had lots to talk about.

cases of other cds is the way to go here. often i won't even realise a particular cd was misplaced until it turns up in another box.

I have a feeling that what happened was this; a few weeks ago I took a CD to the car to play as I drove somewhere, went to put it in the player, and found Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga already in there. So I reckon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga IS in another CD's case, I just haven't a fucking clue which one.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

haha, in my last divorce I took all the cds. No regrets.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

In my teens I'd brought a pile of Can CDs out to the kitchen and accidentally dropped them on the floor. I looked and looked for the disc of Future Days, which had gone flying, but it wasn't anywhere. Years later, after I'd already replaced it of course, it showed up when my parents replaced the dishwasher, lodged underneath it. Saved itself for a rainy day. It even sounds a bit like a dishwasher running....

stop saying Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

que sera seroff (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 April 2009 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

Why should I stop saying Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga? I like saying Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I shall keep saying Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Or, rather, typing, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Although, to be honest, I have c&p'd Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga the last few times.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 April 2009 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

despite my archive being a random mess, i have only lost one cd (that i am currently aware of).
the fact that its Internal Affairs Pharoahe Monch which is now seriously OOP makes me even more fucked off.
i have turned the archive upside down/inside out looking for the fragger, but i think its definitely gone.
hey ho.
at least you have the option that ga ga ga ga ga (and i typed that out manually as opposed to c&p'ing ga ga ga ga ga is easily available.

mark e, Monday, 20 April 2009 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

I've actually managed to lose Global Communication's 76 14 not once but twice: my original CD from way back when and also the remastered version I bought after the first disc went missing. (Well, I say 'I' but I'm fairly sure the second time my wife was to blame).

I have both CD cases but no CD's (although I've still got disc 2 of the remastered version but not the actual album)

My wife has the nasty habit of putting the CD she takes out of the stereo into the first empty case she finds and as we've got something like 1,000+ CDs if you don't notice the missing CD early on it makes it extremely difficult to locate

groovypanda, Monday, 20 April 2009 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

but you must somewhere have a cd that isn't in its case (because the 76 14 cd is in there instead). just start putting all the uncased cds away and you should find it. (if, indeed, that is the problem. this won't help if the 76 14 cd is, say, in the fridge)

koogs, Monday, 20 April 2009 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've tried that before and it didn't work. You start with finding a CD that's in the wrong case, then look for that CD's correct case, take out the CD that's in it etc etc. Always seem to end up with a dead end of an empty case.

One day I'll go through each and every CD case but as I've got boxes of the things up the attic I can't be bothered at the moment. Plus having the MP3s of the missing album safely tucked away on my hard drive and iPod (from where they'll hopefully never end up in the fridge) helps

groovypanda, Monday, 20 April 2009 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

I went through a really lazy phase where anything I took out of the CD player just got stuffed into the nearest case whether there was something else in there or not. Still missing a copy of Miles Davis - ESP seven years on...

Enemy Insects (NickB), Monday, 20 April 2009 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

Mine seem to turn up on top of bookcases for some reason. That Spoon album's tricky though - it's not in the slot behind the plastic bit with the bonus CD by any chance?

Gavin in Leeds, Monday, 20 April 2009 10:31 (seventeen years ago)

Tried there, and also in the bonus CD case for Gimme Fiction.

I'm scuppered for where it might be.

My CD of Aphex Twin Come to Daddy has been missing for about four years (have the case, the disc is gone) but I haven't given up. I have a burned CD-R in there now, but I am almost positive the original is in another case, just haven't happened across it yet.

Mark, Monday, 20 April 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Back in the late '80s, during one of my few (unrecommended) attemps to commune with Lester Bangs' favourite over-the-counter drug (cough cough), I somehow misplaced my newly-bought Marquee Moon CD. After checking (with blurred vision) the most obvious places through much of the next day, I eventually found it on my turntable, impaled on the spindle, hidden under the little circular rubber platform. I don't think I'd tried to play it; I had a vague memory of putting it there for safekeeping. Or something.

I used to have some roommates with sticky fingers so I hid all my spare bills inside a copy of Rush's Roll the Bones.

Once I opened the bank for a withdrawal, found that the CD was gone but the money was still there. People in the midwest sure do like Rush.

It was in Amelia by Long Fin Killie, which I don't remember ever listening to in the car.

But whoever has walked off with my greatest hits of the Archies, can I have it back, please? THanks.

Ahh, on "TOTP2 with Vic and Bob", that got a play, with the Archies' video with it.

I'm fairly sure the Archies TV series was never shown over here.
