oh man

Young Chizzy (country matters), Sunday, 19 April 2009 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

Electric Light Orchestra - Shangri-La (although it's more of an unrelated song fragment than an actual coda, I like it better than the song itself)

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Pixies - The Happening

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

11. The Smiths - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
12. The Smiths - Unloveable

Gavin in Leeds, Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

what about something by The Smiths?

Zeno, Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

I don't actually know what sort of song to put here, so I'll keep it to tracks whose codas emerge as completely unexpected 11th-hour plot-twists, which somehow make perfect sense in light of the preceding song.

Will start with a bit of a cheat, because in a 7-minute song, this coda takes up about 4:30. But fuck me, it's the greatest coda ever recorded.

13. The Monsoon Bassoon - Commando

Will continue with the first one to spring to mind.

14. Beck - Milk & Honey

Young Chizzy (country matters), Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

22. ELO: "Mr. Blue Sky"
23. Paul Simon: "The Late Great Johnny Ace"

Geir Hongro, Monday, 20 April 2009 00:57 (seventeen years ago)

24. Coldplay, "Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love" (or is this two songs? Anyway, the second part is lovely)

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 April 2009 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

The Coldplay songs off that album with two titles are two different songs, aren't they? Martin said something about them essentially being BOGOF MP3s.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 April 2009 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

The codas don't have to be "beautiful", I guess, just good, or cool, or interesting. 20 I'll say...

24. Sly & The Family Stone - Stand

They don't necessarily have to be unrelated to the main song body either, just... different. The Patrick Wolf and Kanye West ones above are both just kind of minimalist grooves that continue on from the song itself.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 April 2009 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

Silver Jews "Federal Dust" with the bonus of being led in by "here comes the coda" line

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 April 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

i never realized the thing in Goodfellas was the coda the Layla becuase radio only plays the 3 minute single version. I had no idea that song had a coda at all

que sera seroff (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 April 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

37. The first three Suede singles. They only get one number because it's the same idea three times, but it's yet another example of them being leagues ahead of their peers.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 April 2009 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

38. No. 13 Baby - Pixies

Vast Halo, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to say Planxty - Raggle Taggle Gypsy but then i realised that the 'coda' is actually a whole other song so...
39.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

i never realized the thing in Goodfellas was the coda the Layla becuase radio only plays the 3 minute single version. I had no idea that song had a coda at all

You're not listening to real classic rock radio, man.

Shiva Burlesque -- My Sick Friend

Duke, Monday, 20 April 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

it's ironic that Cub Koda never recorded a song with a beautiful coda...

Young Chizzy (country matters), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

the coda to The-Dream's "Mr. Yeah" is so jaw-droppingly beautiful. it's like jumping into a swimming pool after a productive day and just floating there and enjoying the summer air.

It is 4:52 - 5:31 of THKW. I guess I could see your point if it were more "is this a coda to THKW, an intro to When You Sleep, or is it just supposed to exist as an unclassified interlude?" I can see how referring to it as a "coda," specifically, could be controversial b/c of the nature of the album, tho it is attached to the end of THKW & I don't think that Kev would let those sort of details go to chance. But the making it difficult to determine where one element begins/ends, especially on that song argument is moot b/c if you listen to that sequence, the segment I am referring to is distinctly its own thing.

something cuh-ray (Pillbox), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

(the surprise in my 1st post was not over this being objectively self-evident, but was mostly due to this coda/interlude having been referenced before on ILM, tallied alongside the general fanfare for MBV which has been known to surface around these parts)

something cuh-ray (Pillbox), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 07:22 (sixteen years ago)

It is 4:52 - 5:31 of THKW.

Oh that part! I was about to write "I was concentrating on the song itself" or "the song proper" which I suppose means that I don't take that chunk to be a coda or even part of the song. Then again, I've never really thought about it until now. I guess I'd call it an interlude. But I'm more than kewl with it being listed here.

And yes, now that you say it, I assume this has been beaten to death already on ILM. Sorry if I came off bitchy.

Goddamnit Steppenwolf, if only you hadn't come back in at the end of "Magic Carpet Ride" with those pointless extra 10 seconds of chorus, we could've gotten you on this thread.

Ha, as soon as I saw this thread revival I immediately thought of

Sun Kil Moon - "Young Love"

I think that is my song of the year for 2012.

Evan, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

i've heard of the Monsoon Bassoon but I haven't heard a full album. solid tune though. i always meant to pick it up.

"Neon Lights" is probably the best answer to this thread by the way. In my opinion. I knew the tune through this collection of 7" mixes I had when the only KW albums I had were TEE and Computer World. Hearing the full version with the loooong-ass jam at the end of it was one of those real stunning moments in life that you're lucky to get every so often. I think it's my iTunes most played track because of it. Datarock's "I Used to Dance With My Daddy" has a similar coda that's also really great. Also on my top 25.
