No Standells no credibility.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

Standells weren't from Boston.

bendy, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

One write-in vote for Letters to Cleo. Also, Throwing Muses should count because lol Providence.

OK, fine, yes, I Goggled it (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

providence has way more better bands than boston ever has

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Aerosmith was from NH.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Does Dinosaur Jr count?

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

god boston bands are so awful. except for burma.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

Modern Lovers

Standelles were from LA.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

modern lovers i guess. is this all boston has to offer?

the great wallogina (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Boston, you're my home.." My first guess upon hearing this song was that The Standells were liars and were not actually from Boston.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

is this all boston has to offer?

yes

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

No actually you forgot Godsmack.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

Marky Mark

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

The Girls

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

The F.U.'s were from Boston too, no?

How about the Blake Babies (and thus Juliana Hatfield)?

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

MORPHINE

i've developed a pretty visceral hatred Boston accents from speaking to people in Massachussets on the phone at work all th etime, but it's still somehow mildly charming to me if Jonathan Richman or Mark Sandman is singing in the accent

EDUARDO MANOSPENES (some dude), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

voted "Hitch a Ride": best song on the album imo...

hard-core Anglophilic ass kisser (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

no ultimate spinach no credibility.

my faves on that list are the remains and ssd though.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

i'm a big phluph fan too. and a fan of the beacon street union.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

also: ill wind, bo grumpus, apple pie motherhood band, earth opera, and eden's children. i'm a big fan of the bosstown scene.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

also i like negative fx and dys.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

also, even though some of them might not all be technically from boston, i like coverge, the hope conspiracy, siege, and only living witness.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

new models -vs- november group

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

the freeze - vs- the proletariat

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

kinda missing some important people here.

but working with the bands already on the poll, i'm torn between the pixies and burma.

borntohula, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

modern lovers, easy

ss decontrol would be my #2

didja know somebody actually made a documentary about slapshot?

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

No actually you forgot Godsmack.

A good thing, in retrospect.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

The 'Smack is prob in my 10 worst bands ever, so yeah, I'd say so..

billstevejim, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

Ha... "the `Smack"

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

I was driving on Route 1 the other day and saw some amazing graffiti on a rock on the side of the road. It said RIP Brad Delp and had a pic of his face. Man, I wish I'd had my camera.

The correct answer to the poll is the Pixies with Modern Lovers a close second.

Kringelbert Fishtybuns of Steel (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

things I didn't know about boston:

On March 9, 2007, Delp was found dead in his home in Atkinson, New Hampshire.[4] Delp, who was only 55, died from the smoke of two charcoal grills he lit inside his sealed bathroom. He was found by his girlfriend Pamela Sullivan lying on a pillow on his bathroom floor with a suicide note pinned to his shirt stating that he was a "lonely soul." The official cause of death was listed as carbon monoxide poisoning.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder how many people didn't open this poll cause they thought it was about the band boston, and not bands from boston

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

i very nearly did that

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

me too

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

"The correct answer to the poll is the Pixies with Modern Lovers a close second."

No, actually it's not.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

bill magill, ladies and gentlemen!

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Don't mind me, i just hate that "the correct answer is..." bullshit. But I agree that Godsmack sucks.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I think we can all agree on that

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

I find it profoundly depressing that Aerosmith and the Cars (both of whom certainly had their moments) both got more votes than the Modern Lovers.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Bill Magill, always such a delight.

If this were a poll about best song titles from Boston bands then Anal Cunt would have to win.

Also, I thought it was going to be about Boston the band too.

Kringelbert Fishtybuns of Steel (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

Me too, I didn't even open the thread til now because of it! I probably would've voted for the Pixies anyway.

And moaned about the Freeze and Jerry's Kids not being on it.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

I was disappointed when I opened this and it wasn't about Boston, the band! I was all ready to stand up for "Don't Look Back" against "More Than A Feeling."

Anyway, good winners, but Magnetic Fields are notably missing and would have drawn some votes surely...?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, this poll really should have had a lot more votes, period. I voted Pixies, though.

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Thursday, 23 April 2009 03:56 (seventeen years ago)

was i the only one who voted modern lovers? u all crazy

domma sonner (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 April 2009 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, you and Alex must have split your vote! ;)

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Thursday, 23 April 2009 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

"Bill Magill, always such a delight."

I will admit that I am totally guilty of what I criticized ENBB for, so the criticism was probably unfair.

I vote Foreplay/Long Time.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 23 April 2009 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

was i the only one who voted modern lovers mission of burma? u all crazy

call all destroyer, Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

voted "Hitch a Ride": best song on the album imo...

art-ghetto superstar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

(voted Pixies too)

art-ghetto superstar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

As much as I like the Pixies, would I be tarred & feathered (more so than usual) to opine that they're somewhat slavishly overrated?

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 23 April 2009 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I agree, but I don't think there'd be a ton of people lining up to join the club.

some dude, Thursday, 23 April 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

i don't like the pixies v. much at all, not really sure why tho

call all destroyer, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

sorry bro pixies are one of my favourite bands...

art-ghetto superstar (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 24 April 2009 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

No need to apologize.

Can't have a Boston list w/o The Neighborhoods.

mr.raffles, Thursday, 19 July 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

eight years pass...

DJ Steve Stanley, host of "The Now Sounds" on Luxuria Music Internet Radio interviews Bruce Arnold, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Howie Hersh and John Arnold of Orpheus. Show aired on April 18th, 2016.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1OyV4O00s4

kind of an interesting look into the bosstown sound, feat. producer alan lorber, bernard purdie (who i didn't realize is playing on the ultimate spinach records), and psych-pop group orpheus, including some early recordings of theirs as when they were known as the villagers.

budo jeru, Monday, 28 September 2020 23:33 (five years ago)

(lorber isn't among the interviewees, i just mean his work is discussed.)

budo jeru, Monday, 28 September 2020 23:34 (five years ago)

eight months pass...

Anyone know the late-80s early-90s Boston band The 360's? Less well known than anyone on this list, for sure, they're not on streaming services. Someone put one of their songs (below) on a mixtape for me in 1991 and I've always loved it. Kind of a more fun, female-fronted, neo-psych Smashing Pumpkins.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Friday, 18 June 2021 01:15 (four years ago)

i will listen to that tomorrow, sounds interesting!

also looking back at this poll which i haven't thought about in 10 years and where the fuck is galaxie 500?

call all destroyer, Friday, 18 June 2021 02:12 (four years ago)

Not much turnout, but I have a feeling Aerosmith would do much better these days.
