My mate favours the wild Parliament experiments and that bizarre 'Rhenium' compo - check the bagpipes.

Is the Funkadelic stuff that different - is one side of the coin less crap ?

Tuesday really is Taking Sides day! :) Gotto go with Parliament. I only have a best-of, but hot damn that cd is filled with classic fonk. Funkadelic is bit more guitary, but also quite funky, Maggot Brian is quite good. One Nation Under a Groove is allright but a bit patchy (but then again it contains the majestic 'Who says a funk band can't play rock?!')

As silly as it sounds, I could never get into Funkadelic, but I love Parliament. I just think they *sound* better, and they've held up better.

Parliament are pop, Funkadelic are rock.

Or in Clinton's own words (approx.), Parliament are "commercial, with horns and stuff," Funkadelic are "nasty, like 12 Jimi Hendrixes in one band." I prefer Funkadelic, being more a hard rock than soul fan. Best album: STANDING ON THE VERGE OF GETTING IT ON.

(Parliament's 60s RHENIUM/OSMIUM is the odd album out; before they found their groove. It prefigures Funkadelic, though "Red Hot Mama" and "I Call My Baby Pussycat" set the template for the Funkadelic sound. The bagpipes are quite the anomaly.)

Funkadelic: s/t, Maggot Brain, America Eats Its Young + singles walk all over a bunch of Parliament albums that prove once and for all Parliament was George Clinton's pop band, and that pop meant singles only to George Clinton. By the sheer mass of good tracks, Funkadelic wins.

Dleone, I have to disagree with that. Maybe your opinion has changed in the past two years? Heh. I see Parliament as an album band (I mean they did concept albums!). Chocolate City, Mothership Connection, Funketelechy Vs. Placebo Syndrome, Clones of Dr. Funkenstein, and my favorite, Motor Booty Affair. Gloryhallastoopid is their only weak album in my opinion. And Trombipulation is underrated! If you like Worrell, you can't pass that one up.

Funkadelic changed too much. By 'Uncle Jam Wants You' they basically sounded like Parliament. I think they're a lot less consistent than Parliament.

I think you can get tied up too much with defining Parliament from Funkadelic. I don't think the delineations are that tied down. And of course there's George Clinton solo you need to take into account.

Yeah, I think my opinion has changed a little on this, mostly due to spending a lot of time with the Parliament reissues a while back. And I do think there was a clear difference between Parliament and Funkadelic. Hardcore Jollies could only have been Funkadelic, while Mothership could only have been Parliament. Even in the early 70s, the Parliament Invictus stuff is a lot different than the first Funkadelic records.

Funkadelic, by a (Sir) nose. It was Funkadelic that I was first exposed to in the mid-'80s (tho I remembered "Give Up The Funk" from the roller-boogie days), and Funkadelic which first electrified the whitebread psych/metal fanatic that I was. But Parliament appealed to the closet disco fan in me, and nowadays, asking me to choose between 'em is like asking which foot I'd rather lose, the right or left? Now I just think of P-Funk as a collective: The greatest American rock band to span the 1960s thru '80s.

Saw Original P for free at Fort Dupont Park in Southeast DC tonight. "Original P" includes 2 founding members of Parliament, Grady Thomas and Fuzzy Haskins. Their large group did "Cosmic Slop", "Standing on the Verge," "Flashlight," "Atomic Dog," and other songs associated with Parliament and Punkadelic. It was fun. The place was packed--at least 4,000 or so people.

this is kinda a meaningless comparison unless you just narrow it down to which albums, on the whole, are better (since its all essentially the same people). In which case I vote for Funkadelic.

They formed in '97 I think and since then Calvin Simon left the group to become a gospel solo artist and Ray Davis died. Calvin, Ray, and the 2 remaining original members Grady and Fuzzy formed Original P and were original Parliament vocalists who in the '90s left George Clinton probably because of money issues. I just saw them at a large outdoor free show in DC's Anacostia ward. FWIW, me and my 2 buddies were some of the only white folks there (I literally counted 7 of us). The crowd consisted of mainly folks in their 30s and 40s.

R.I.P. David Mills who wrote about P-Funk, and just died at age 48 in New Orleans where he was working on the new HBO tv show Treme with David Simon (producer of The Wire)

Mills first tried his hand at screenwriting with an episode of Homicide, written for his old friend Simon. The episode (starring Robin Williams) was named “Bop Gun” in reference to a Parliament Funkadelic song; Mills was a diehard funk fan, having published the independent fanzine Under The Funk (focusing exclusively on the music of George Clinton) in his early days, and throughout his career he would drop these sorts of P-Funk references in his scripts—even naming his production company Knee Deep after the 1979 song, “(Not Just) Knee Deep.”

Funkadelic. Their recordings with Eddie Hazel are monumental funky guitar bam-a-lam. Since Hendrix was namechecked by George C. himSELF I propose that theoretically Jimi would have adopted a sound similar to Funkadelic crossed with '69 - '74 Miles Davis by the end of 1972. But his lyrics would've been much better; Jimi is under-rated as a wordsmith IMO.
