Well?

dud, wandering lucy were probably slightly better. mirah is played nearly every hour here on the college station, big with the chicks.

K. hates everything, pay him no mind. Total classic. It's hard to dislike someone who works with Phil Elvrum, but Mirah's contributions to the Microphones are well reflected in her solo work.

And to deflect the obvious joke, I am spelling my name as below.

by the way, total fucking classic-2nd track on 'it's like this...' has the best junior high school band drum sound i have ever heard

Her 1st album was splendid (if a bit samey at times), ESPECIALLY that last track w/ the jazz standard vibe. Her live performances were FANTASTIC (esp. w/ the ukelele). I imagine her 2nd album is more of the same, but different in a good way. She reminds me a bit of Liz Phair circa _Girlysounds_ - plain-spoken but demure, coyly suggestive. Better singer, though, and less pop-culture baggage. Mirah sounds like a singer / songwriter that's been raised in a small town and instilled with small town values. I like that.

If I said a similar thing on the other thread, I'm suing.

And for an indiepop fan, Keyth sure is a bitter old sod.

She does get a bit precious at times, but she's such a spot-on performer and often-brilliant songwriter that it's hard to complain about those parts: you just have to try and remember during the "person person person" song how great "Of Pressure" was. Also, though: the quality of her voice can rescue basically anything, even when it's approaching cloying.

I still need to pick up the second record: I've heard that brilliant lead track and some bits she recorded at my friend's house, but not the finished product.

Mirah's other thread.
A few years ago, maybe three she toured Canada in winter with The Microphones. Now aside from the fact most Canadian bands arent insane enough to try this even in the best of weather they went to towns they had never been in.
Aside from the two albums, at least one 7" there is a one sided 12" ep thats worth buying if you see it for sale, provided you like her other albums.
I've mentioned this memory several times but I wish I had the photo of their show where we had to ducttape the mic to a broom I shoved inside a case of bud to act as a makeshift mic stand. Its the one issue of our campus paper that never made it to web due to tufficalties.

I dunno, seems easy enough to me.

adam, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...Because you've never heard the Microphones, or have trouble isolating Mirah's voice on their songs. Understandable. ;)

ciaran, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...Because you've never Or you just dont like Phil. He is a guy, its possible someone doesnt like him. Im jsut a guy and I know peopel dont liek me, hell they wanna battle me in rap threads. Maybe I should tell them Im a) White and B) Canadian and even C) Acadian.

one year passes...
hahaha. this thread is amazing. calvin johnson is kind've a weird dude. phil elvrum is a weirdo, but makes good music. i think that's the big thing in olympia--being WEIRD

mirah seems (comparatively) normal. and her music is just really... nice. she's got a gorgeous song, and it's cheesy and silly but it's very... pretty. and self-aware, in a way. not self-aware like the moldy peaches, though. that would be AWFUL.

but i've been listening to her first album for the past few days, as i got it as a birthday gift. the first half of the album is totally golden. then it wears a bit thin. at least, the songs don't seem as memorable to me... but i've just had it a few days. taping it now to listen to in the car.

two years pass...
Her new remix album "Joyride" is surprisingly excellent! The remixers really do her justice (not much radical reinvention, a lot of lo-fi electronic flourishes fleshing out arrangements.)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 22 October 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

i was coming into this thread to say pretty much the opposite of Michael - the new remix album seems to be awful.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Sunday, 22 October 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I used to listen to Mirah a good deal. I even bought the Cold, Cold Water EP. Then C'mon Miracle came out and I bought it and listened to it once, and then never played one of her albums again. I'm not sure why. C'mon Miracle wasn't awful, if I remember. I just had some sort of minor epiphany.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Sunday, 22 October 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

I really hope that 'Jerusalem [Chopped and Screwed]' is exactly what it sounds like. Wow, and there's a remix of my favorite song of hers, 'Don't Die in Me.' Excited for this one. It's out Nov. 21st, it seems.
