I like _Homb_, the only album I've heard from them. So promising if not yet classic, and search _Homb_. There, that was easy. ;-)
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
i thought 'homb' was hippy drudge.
must get: '...and farewll to hightide'
very very good indeed. personally, i think its the only cerberus shoal record worth getting. its very taut, unlike the boring progness stuff on 'homb'. its got 'broken springs spring forth from broken clocks' on it too, which is one of my favourite songs ever.

Erin, is Mr. Boy Dog coming out soon? Hope all of you are well, say hi to the gang for me.
(Tangentially, a change to the above: my favorite is now Homb.)

Sorry not to be clearer: the "free-folk" scene is sometimes linked to Vermont because of the ... I forget the name of the festival but every year a bunch of bands (from all over the US) like Sunburned Hand of the Man, the Charlambides, etc. meet up and play some sets. The Wire did a cover story titled "NEW WEIRD AMERICA" oh, about four or five months ago that you should check out, both for the interviews and the extensive "listening guide" that came with the article. I can't vouch for them playing in barns but I think this might be on the track of what you want ... ?

Over the past few years though, they've become excellent. The split with Alan Bishop is fucking STELLAR. 100% godhead killer masterwork ESSENTIALCLASSIC
― roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)
the other splits in that series are pretty cool too... album-wise, i've found them a little spotty. occasionally boring, but occasionally very cool.
i like them when they're literary and feeling more on the outer limits of things. the post-rock meets space-rock parts sorta lack something to me. (but i think that's a me thing.)

Yes! Thats what I first heard. They can occasionally make me giggle like a school-girl. This new (old) CD doesn't have any 'emo'ness post or otherwise as far as I can hear. Their press sheet are really good, too. An excerpt: "'Bastion of Preeves' begins with a likeness to the minimalism of Steven Reich then moves into a realm of vocal harmonies, akin to The Flaming Lips and The Residents[...]Intermingled throughout is the more ragged stomp of gypsy styles and the Sun City Girls"
How could you not want to check that out?
To prove I am not a Cerberus Shoal street team member though, they can get a bit boring and drag here and there, but its very nice esp. to casually listen to.

People like Chris Dahlen always jump in and disagree when I mention the above, but I'm really pleased by the sense of cohesion and driving intent behind the new EP. I feel like they were one of the many groups doing the 'new weird Americana' thing before it ever became labeled as such, but rather than the sparse, swooshy jam band circa 'Elements of Structure,' with this EP at least they seem to have absorbed some of the more agitated raga rhythmic core and aggressive vocal style of bands like SHOTM, No-Neck, etc. Again, it all comes down to taste, but the edge that comes through in their choruses here really makes the record.

bastion of itchy preeves has been my jam lately when i wanna feel creepy.
saw them on that big tour in 2005 (in an old firestation in middle-of-nowhere, indiana) and it was a mind-altering experience.
also...they have a number of new projects. none of which i can remember the name of right now.

Big Blood and Fire on Fire are the main ones. Both excellent. I saw Caleb play solo a couple of years ago, mostly songs in Spanish, also excellent.

I think Ding! is one of my all time favorite piece of recorded music. But I have not delved much into this band otherwise -- is anything else nearly as good?

I enjoy Homb a lot, peaceful & contemplative. Chaining The Knoblessone or w/e it's called is way more out there but also worth hearing, as per upthread it sounds like people really like the split with Herman Dune but I have not heard it.
