POO (Pick Only One):

Best Depeche Mode song.

my choice:

"One Caress"

Go England!!!, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just one, eh? Hmmmmmmmmmm......

I'm going with "Everything Counts".

Alex in NYC, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Barrel of a Gun

Howard Moody, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sister of Night" for me please.

Mark Synder, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only one? Bollocks ....

Leave in Silence, Get the Balance Right, Everything Counts, Something to Do, Pipeline, Shame, Told You So, The Landscape is Changing, Stripped, Behind the Wheel, Black Celebration, Blasphemous Rumours, Strangelove, Shake The Disease, The Happiest Girl, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, World Full of Nothing, Never Let Me Down Again, Question of Lust ...

phil, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Just one,' please. I can't even pick one version of "Enjoy the Silence" -- single mix, demo/harmonium mix, live 1993 tour mix or Francois Kevorkian 'hands and feet' mix?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just one. Don't wimp out!

Go England!!!, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Off to watch the match. Looks like POO was short-lived. Too many fence sitters. Why did Moby send me here?

England, etc., Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Home". That kills me.

dave q, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

enjoy the silence. today at least...

gareth, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Home" for me too. Even a crappy MIDI file of it is beautiful enough to make me go all gooey inside. If not that, then "In Your Room".

EdwardO, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shake the Disease. Obviously.

Douglas, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at the moment it's Everything Counts but my mate has "borrowed" my DM cds for about a year. I do like Enjoy the Silence a lot as well.

dog latin, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Somebody" without question.

Dan Perry, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just one. Don't wimp out!

Bah on wimping out! I have stated my case and I will stick with it!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Love Thieves

Not sure why - perhaps because of the guitar that comes in halfway through.

Watched the 86-98 DVD last night. Shame it has the worst quality stereo sound of ANY DVD I have ever heard.

Zanny G, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything Counts. Followed closely by Enjoy the Silence and People are People. Stories of Old is a personal favorite not quite good enough to fit 'best' ..

Dare, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"In Your Room". Followed by "It's No Good" and pretty much all of Black Celebration.

Tim, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really was hoping that Depeche Mode had a new song out called "Poo". That would be the best song evah!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh girl/What can I do/I handed you love/You gave me your poo

Dan Perry, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot Dave Gahan punctuating every pause with an "ALL RIGHT! LET'S SEE THOSE HANDS!"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry but I gonna pick more than one: Never Let Me Down Again, Fly on the Windsreen, and Shake the Disease.

MICHELINE, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

See You.

Joe Sadler, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Death's Door !!!!!

ORchid ONe, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An inspired choice -- and arguably it did predict where a lot of later Depeche would end up...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Sean Carruthers. Did you have a choice here? Just wondering, since we were in agreement about the Echo one.

ORchid ONe, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Blasphemous Rumours" provokes the most nostalgia.

J Blount, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nice one zanny - no-one ever mentions that. it's definitely in my top 10 (or so...)

in fact, in no particular order (cause it's too hard)

* halo * question of time (phil harding extended mix) * strangelove (single version) * higher love * enjoy the silence * personal jesus * stripped (101 version) * never let me down again * world in my eyes * shake the disease * love thieves

and 'dangerous' / 'but not tonight' tying for best b. side.

piscesboy, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"But Not Tonight" wins for me. Today anyway...

rob, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blasphemous rumours and judas.

cecilia, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

put me down for 'it's no good'. ever the obscurantist...

Dave M., Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Growing up in L.A. in the 80s, the overwhelming popularity of Depeche Mode was truly oppressive. That's why my favorite song by them is the first one I heard (i.e. before they blew up) - Master & Servant. I think it's their danciest track and I really love the roar-into- screech/scream bit.

In my teens, my frustration with Depeche fans led me to fantasize about a Manichean universe where New Order and the Pet Shop Boys would turn their superior beats, textures and melodies into plagues upon Depeche Mode and Erasure.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I share Ned's predicament! But I think "Enjoy the Silence" narrowly outdoes "Policy of Truth", "Personal Jesus", "Never Let Me Down Again", "See You", "In Your Room", "Useless", and countless others.

Vinnie, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going with "Black Celebration/Fly on the Windscreen - Final" since they are two parts of the same song in my mind. All the straws of oddness grabbed by those writing about "Kid A" ("your mind will slowly melt once exposed to this sonorous bleakness") could be better applied to the transition between the two songs. The songs themselves are the best DM lyrically, emotianlly.

"Love In Itself"

i concur with The Love Thieves.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Home, but Master In Servant is nipping at its heels

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Now ironically I'm listening to Dave's solo album right now (which is quite good!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Lately it's been "Never Let Me Down Again" but I can't change my answer from "Somebody" because I sang the first verse to my wife when I proposed to her.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

AW. :-) You softie.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll forever be beholden to Music For The Masses, as my first real exposure to DM was watching 101 at my friend's house.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Enjoy the Silence

but I can't change my answer from "Somebody" because I sang the first verse to my wife when I proposed to her

MP3 PLZ !!!!!!!!!!

Playgroup's cover of "Behind the Wheel" ;)

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it's "Lie to Me."

After that, "It's No Good," "Policy of Truth."

daria g (daria g), Friday, 18 February 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Everything Counts"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 21 February 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the reedy synth sounds that make it awesome.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 21 February 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually a melodica...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 February 2005 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you think of the version of "Clean" on the Playing the Angel DVD? Really nice 'new' take, especially given the change in Dave's singing.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Everything Counts" is definitely up there. Great stuff going on melodically/harmonically in that song.

note: any and all comma splices in this post are intentional (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

such a great album. and "blasphemous rumours" as the payoff is just sublime. i always forget about it but yeah that is maybe my favourite dm songs and one of martin's best choruses

xp

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

sigh. that would be in the "not buying any more of their records" period that followed my angry reaction to songs and love and devotion we talked about on another thread. so i dont know. xpost to ned

You need to fix that.

angry fan is angry

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

hahahaha yeah i know

Burt_ in the disco! Hongro blessed DJ! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Did we ever do a fave Depeche B-side thread (non-remix)? "Happiest Girl" would probably take it in a walk but beyond that I really like "In Your Memory."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Playing the Angel is more pleasant to listen to than Violator

I love "Happiest Girl" so much, it's terrifying.

"Shout" and "Ice Machine" are pretty great, too.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

(And w/r/t newer B-sides I finally heard "Newborn" the other day, good stuff. There's another Playing the Angel B-side I need to track down but iTunes doesn't have it, thanks guys.)

xpost haha totally forgot about "Set Me Free," love that one.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

"Shout" is really lovely for that moaning wordless part in the break, I think it was the first full hint of how they would use similar in the future. Big echoing feeling on the beat is completely proto-warehouse rave.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit I forgot "Shout!" was a B-Side. Come to think of it that might be my POO for this thread, so it would also be my favorite B-side.

note: any and all comma splices in this post are intentional (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

it was a direction I wish they'd explored more

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

(Setting aside alternate takes, 'full' versions, etc., though I suppose "Painkiller" sneaks in under the wire there.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

ok, would pick "but not tonight" or "pleasure little treasure" from that list. i think.

Burt_ in the disco! Hongro blessed DJ! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

yeah this is still a tossup between "Sea of Sin" and "Happiest Girl" for me

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

or "ice machine"

Burt_ in the disco! Hongro blessed DJ! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

aaarrghhhh

Burt_ in the disco! Hongro blessed DJ! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

I just love the random Beethoven in there. "Oh yeah BTW Alan was messing around one night..."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

The live version of "Pleasure Little Treasure" from 101 = one of their best moments. The studio take's understated approach is entrancing but wow, how well they were able to turn it into a complete barnburner in concert.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

haha i just included "set me free (remotivate me)" in my entry for the ilm mix competition!

"shout" is so ridiculously ahead of its time, especially the rio mix, where everything strips away apart from that metallic beat and then this huge salsa bassline drops in!

i really like "dangerous" (sensual mix) from the "personal jesus" 12", it has this great acid bass line, and one of gahan's sexiest vocals

but my favourite is "now this is fun", the perfect mix of early depeche melancholy and just sick sick programming

I just want to send a special shout out to "Flexible" which is always underrated. also the synths that come after the vocal line remind me of donkey kong country.

To answer the thread question, my gut instinct is "But Not Tonight", but oh man I could easily change my mind in a million directions...

Got my tickets for the Toronto show yesterday!

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Good on yer.

Today's choice, "Here is the House," with the killer touch being that wordless descending harmony Martin adds with the final chorus.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Here is the House" fine but I'd never place it anywhere near the top of my list

note: any and all comma splices in this post are intentional (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

the songs immediately preceding & following it on the album are amazing tho - "Stripped" and "World Full of Nothing"

note: any and all comma splices in this post are intentional (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

yes! one of my favourite dave/martin dual vocals - just after dave sings "where it all happened" martin does that gorgeous "here is the how-ow-se" inflection. that final chorus should loop forever

xp

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

I've muttered it on here before but one of the best live moments I've ever seen with Depeche was Dodger Stadium in 1990, Martin solo with guitar on stage, doing a wonderful version of "Here is the House" and the *whole stadium* singing along. The bootleg of the show I have confirms that -- an astonishing moment.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Today: "I Want You Now." I talk more about it here along with the whole album but I just cannot get over the perfect construction of rhythms out of wheezing accordions and gasps -- totally proto-Timbaland, still.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 March 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

no-one gonna rep for PIPELINE?

Rob Bolton, Friday, 13 March 2009 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Never Let Me Down Again," because it has all the life-or-death stakes that a good DM song needs, but in the context of all that "best friend" stuff. Or "Behind The Wheel." Both songs are great all-night-bender songs.

Eazy, Friday, 13 March 2009 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

And with a weekend break, "Blue Dress" because of the way those guitars sound queasy as hell when they come in after the first chorus and because of the way Martin sings "Belieeeeve" before another classically portentous Alan Wilder piano figure.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 March 2009 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

I have had "Sea of Sin" wandering around my head since last week.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 16 March 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yesterday was "The Mercy in You" and today was "Insight." And I am still really, really pissed that they've never done "Insight" live to my knowledge because that secretly IS their best song of all time, in my head.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

"insight" is great, though i prefer the verses to the big bombastic choruses. but "sister of night" is better.

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

I love "Sister of Night" for a technical reason, namely the fact that Dave's vocal was patched together from about twenty different takes!

When "Insight" hits those harmonies on the verses, yes, and when that one extended backing wail from Martin on "The fire still burns" hits, it's all over.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

actually the best bit about "insight" is that weird detuned tabla during the verses

xp

in a way, although "sister of night" is my favourite song from ultra, i think martin's voice may have suited it better. like alot of the songs on ultra i'm way more into the production than the vocals and lyrics. that synthesized wailing at the end of "sister of night" is sublime

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

actually the best bit about "insight" is that weird detuned tabla during the verses

I was just noticing that a bit when I was listening to it (not specifically that it was a detuned tabla but more 'wait, had I heard that before?').

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

"now, this is fun (extended version"

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 27 March 2009 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Never Let Me Down Again"

baaderonixx, Friday, 27 March 2009 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Question of Lust"

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Friday, 27 March 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

Actually the best bit of 'Insight' is when Martin comes in on the right channel only, just for the line 'lead me on' (at 2:25), closer and more intimately than all of his other lines in the song.

turnover is validating, profit is salivating (ledge), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'll go with that.
