after an initial lukewarm reception i am so hooked on these guys right now

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 30 April 2009 05:28 (sixteen years ago)

windsurf

kl0mpus (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 April 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

can't really decide; i have to say the sorcerer album is really underrated though

QE II, Thursday, 30 April 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

Sorcerer. The mix for Allez Allez a while back was good. Having said that I think White Diamond is my fav.

mmmm, Thursday, 30 April 2009 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ otm, except i think the pt miks of white diamond is the real winner (both parts)

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Thursday, 30 April 2009 08:27 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't heard Windsurf but of the others I'm going for Hatchback.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 April 2009 09:28 (sixteen years ago)

I love the open space and the rubbery and/or reverberating synth-sounds on the Sorcerer disc. Also: Reminds me of lots of 70s -- early 80s pop stuff (Hall & Oates and "Yacht Rock," somehow). If he edited the songs a bit, the White Magic disc would be dynamite.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 30 April 2009 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

I think all three are kind of patchy, although I only have the album sampler 12 and Surfing at Midnight by Sorcerer.

Love the one that opens the Windsurf album that sounds like Tears for Fears. Super-glossy.

Maybe half the Hatchback album is great, but I can't decide which half. I like the obvious ones, I guess - White Diamond, Carefree Highway and Nesso. Didn't really get on with Everything is Neu.

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 30 April 2009 11:14 (sixteen years ago)

i love hatchbacks 10+ minute synthscapes or whatever u wanna call em. 'lotus & the robot' is a true jam.

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 30 April 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

i like driving my hatchback to the beach while listening to hatchback. then going for a little windsurf.

cutty, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

^^ you are a sorcerer

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

arent these all pretty much the same dudes?

Lamp, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

surfing at midnight> white diamond > hatchback album > windsurf album > sorcerer album

mizzell, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

Love these, but none are as good as the two Call and Response lps. Or the Rubies record, come to think of it.

Stevie T, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

"surfing at midnight" is pretty good, but "egyptian sunset" is the big sorcerer jam, imo.

if pressed to vote, probably would go with hatchback just because of "carefree highway"

the one shitty thing these guys did is that track towards the end of coastlines with the funky acoustic riff that sounds straight out of a home&garden type tv show

QE II, Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

arent these all pretty much the same dudes?

Windsurf is Daniel Saxon Judd (aka. Sorcerer) and Samuel Milton Grawe (aka. Hatchback).

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

was trying to figure out what point you were trying to make by using their middle names till i figured out u probably c/ped that from somwhere

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

also they have great middle names

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

their middles names>>>>>their last names

mizzell, Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

apart they are merely synthesizer wizards, but their powers combined!

windsurf > hatchback > sorcerer

windsurf - better tracks/remixes

hatchback - white diamond (PT remix), and original

sorcerer - surfing at midnight

space cowboy (san frandisco), Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

there's a new windsurf 12" with vocals(!) and beatbroker and studio remixes. just sayin

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 30 April 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

are the middle parts of your name eyes or boobies?

space cowboy (san frandisco), Thursday, 30 April 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

yes

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Friday, 1 May 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

would like to hear some love for hatchback's HORIZON, one of the all-time nu-kosmische jams

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 1 May 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

Am listening to the Hatchback album now, and liking "Carefree Horizon" a great deal, a bit Chris & Cosey crossed with Underworld's "Jumbo" to my untrained ear.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Friday, 1 May 2009 12:16 (sixteen years ago)

neil do you mean "carefree highway" or "horizon"?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 1 May 2009 13:44 (sixteen years ago)

Oops Carefree Highway! Horizon is great too, a definite 70s German space-electronica vibe to that one.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Friday, 1 May 2009 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

I think I need to revisit the Sorcerer album as i got it at the same time as about 4 others and probably didn't give it the attention it deserved. Over the last couple of months I've been loving the Windsurf and Hatchback albums and look forward to listening to them in some warmer weather this summer

groovypanda, Friday, 1 May 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

any thoughts on "Neon Leon"? or am I missing this on a balearic thread

all tied right now for me

didn't know anything about this & am really enjoying it here in my sleeplessness so thank you to this thread & the people on it!!

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

j0hn you should join us on the balearic thread sometime

fleetwood (max), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

I lurk there sometimes, my engagement with that stuff is heavy dilettante territory, I just listen & enjoy but don't really know anything about it

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

i dont think anyone does really

fleetwood (max), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

i like it because it encourages you to be a dilettante; you tend to build yr balearic playlists by skimming other genres in search of a certain kind of 'feel'

fleetwood (max), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I dig that, it's more or less what I do w/all the long drawn-out synth droney stuff I'm rocking these days (schulze, roach, max corbacho), but it's hard for me to overcome my "figure out what the deal is enough to say something authoritative about it" urge with something where the aesthetic has elements of history/"retro"/reference as in some of this stuff. always want to say, "here's what's going on here."

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if that thread is into James Ferraro but that stuff basically sends me into ecstasies of critical theory

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

o i have theories dude, Important Theories about memory & distance w/r/t certain kinds of synth sounds, but, u know, u have to visit me and my bong in my parents garage if u want to hear them

fleetwood (max), Saturday, 10 October 2009 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

max the lol you just gave me is one I hope someday to repay with one of my trademarked Dumb Shit J0hn D Said or something, in yr debt for what seems like the fifth time in 24 hours

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

WOOooo El Condor. Didn't expect Sorcerer to get this shoegaze-y. This is a silly comparison, but it even reminds me of Ulrich Schnauss (god love him) if he weren't trying so hard.

ok star grumbles (lukas), Thursday, 22 October 2009 07:05 (fifteen years ago)

nice Hatchback mix @ dreamchimney today

Bangelo, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

I played the Sorcerer album last weekend while sitting up against a giant piece of driftwood on the beach in Victoria, BC. The sun was shining, seagulls were flying, the waves were rushing over the rocks. It was sublime. Perfect soundtrack for a clear, brisk fall day at the beach.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

hah, i probably listened to the new sorcerer album in victoria last weekend too, but wasn't the beach cold?? anyways neon leon really is wonderful, much better than i remember white magic being - definitely warrants a relisten

'push to freeze' is my early fave

Any thoughts on the Wierd Energy CD from Windsurf? Sounds like a more 80s Sorcerer.... if that's possible!

mmmm, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

Really enjoying Weird Energy, and also Greeen Linez - Things That Fade which has a similar aesthetic.

mmmm, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 10:26 (thirteen years ago)

after only one listen i agree that weird energy is pretty great (esp "cilantro vision"). dan is one of the nicest dudes ever, good to hear he's still at it.

i love that they're moving more and more towards completely straightfaced smoove '80s balearica, seems like few people outside of the claremont 56/international feel/esp institute axis have the balls to pull this off without adding extra layers of irony or digital manipulation or w/e (tho i like that type of thing too, tbh)

i'll have to keep an eye out for that greeen linez record

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:22 (twelve years ago)

i don't listen to any of this stuff anymore, i should start again

the late great, Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago)

if you haven't already given it a shot, you should probably start with the hatchback record from last year - tho it's a bit more new agey/cosmic than the rest of their output

still trying to get my hands on the flights of fancy stuff, based on the samples i've heard they seem to be nailing this vibe

now what

the late great, Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago)

i think the peak of these dudes was "horizon" on the 1st hatchback record

the late great, Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago)

so i guess wierd energy is the way to go, huh?

the late great, Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:50 (twelve years ago)

ha, guess you're mostly up to speed then. but yes. weird energy is definitely worth checking out.

did you ever post on the nu age hippies thread? not sure it's exactly in this vein but that was where i think most of the discussion re: that hatchback record was taking place

groovypanda, Monday, 8 October 2012 11:42 (twelve years ago)

I guess the Greeen Linez stuff is pretty thick with 80's irony, it definitely has it's moments for me though.

mmmm, Monday, 8 October 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago)

just in case the music doesn't scream 80s enough someone's made a video..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bWzaEWuv_g

mmmm, Monday, 8 October 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago)

^ feeling this, but the video is definitely a bit overkill. almost veering into macintosh plus-levels of '80s irony but that's not always a bad thing

and yeah that international feel compilation looks like it might be worth purchasing if you don't already have it all on vinyl. there's definitely some legit straightfaced smoothness on there, tho most of it has a proggy, sorta '70s vibe to it. if anyone is into this stuff and hasn't heard ifeel studio's "the coptic sun" you are in for a treat (i know we discussed ifeel studio on another thread, but i haven't been posting for like 2 months so i am having a hard time remembering which one).

the dr dunks remix of seahawks' "catch a star" track from earlier this year is pretty cool too, definitely a little reminiscent of "white diamond"

does anyone here know much about pacific horizons? i like what little i've heard, but most of the releases seem to be super limited and again very hard to get ahold of

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago)

I need to hear that IF comp! I've kind of slept on International Feel I think, should readdress. The last Seahawks I really liked was the Crue-L Grand Orchestra vs Seahawks' Bon Voyage Trip which is lovely but too expensive in these parts...

mmmm, Monday, 8 October 2012 22:59 (twelve years ago)

I downloaded their available stuff from itunes this morning and I'm catching up with it between classes. The track itself is sadly a bit Balearic-by-numbers (bongos, bird chirps, Spanish guitars) but I couldn't resist something called "Jack Parsons' Laboratory."
