why does it seem that a lot of hipsters prefer Pod over Last Splash?

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 May 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

Because Pod is marginally better?

Trust (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 2 May 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, Pod is slightly better, though Last Splash is brilliant as well. Might be the Albini drum sound that gives Pod the edge.

tylerw, Saturday, 2 May 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

everyone has always preferred Pod over Last Splash, not just hipsters. Other than the title track of Last Splash (which is admittedly great), I don't remember anything about that record.

akm, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

Last Splash, no question.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

You really don't! There is no title track. I guess you mean "Cannonball".

The Safari EP beats either, which is why Last Splash seemed like such a let-down to me at the time, amazing lead single apart. Pod's rawness was really not what I wanted to hear in 1990 but it was a grower.

Countdown to Surmounter....

POD

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

no

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

fucking

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

question.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

Although...

No Aloha > Pod > Last Splash

Trust (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

pod. absolutely. no question.

jed_, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

Might be the Albini drum sound better drummer that gives Pod the edge.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, wait, who is the drummer on Pod?

tylerw, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

Wasn't it "Mike Hunt" or did that come later?

dlp9001, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

the key to pod is the songwriting + minimalist production, which leaves ample room for minutiae in the mix

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

from a recent conversation i got the impression that Last Splash was the current hipster preference. anyway, as much as i like a good deal (LOL!) of Last Splash, Pod is so much better. stronger, better sounding and more interesting songs throughout.

special guest appearance (Roberto Spiralli), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

I'd actually have more trouble w/Pod vs. Title TK. This one is Pod easily.

dlp9001, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

pod vs title tk is a more interesting question, but i don't know if it's really that difficult

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

I'll go with Pod. Just more endearingly weirder than Last Splash.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

"The Breeders were without a drummer, so Albini suggested Britt Walford of Slint join for the recording sessions. Deal met Walford after a Pixies concert in Chicago; Walford agreed to play drums on the album, and joined The Breeders under the assumed name of "Shannon Doughton"."

jed_, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't think hipsters even bothered with the breeders, let alone pod

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

would be interested in a poll between Pod and Bossanova - in my experience the most/least rated Breeders/Pixies album respectively. not interested enough to start the poll myself tho.

special guest appearance (Roberto Spiralli), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

oh and "Shannon Doughton is also known as Mike Hunt, but was born Britt Walford."

jed_, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

xp: BW is listed as "Shannon Doughton" on Pod and "Mike Hunt" on Safari.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

"Mike Hunt" on Safari.

Always thought that was depressingly unfunny.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think u rly get much better than iris, it has to be said and repeated

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

which is kind of the title track

jed_, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

You guys hang out with hipsters too often.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 May 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

meanwhile, I just wanna get along.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 May 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

see I don't get it..to me Last Splash is obviously superior...too many great tunes to ignore...I mean I love Iris, Glorious, Doe, Hellbound, Fortunately Gone, but still Last Splash has so many great moments...

Production-wise its the same...Surmounter called LS lush when it was polled, and I totally agree, it's got that grunge/shoegazer blurry smeary guitar sound, which just fits the cracked pop songwriting like a velvet glove...meanwhile, Pod is prolley my least favourite Albini production (of the four I've heard)...too spare, Kim's natural effervescence seems a bit muted...

this is prolley goth vs. grunge part II btw...

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 May 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

pod = richer songwriting + tamped down arrangements

LS = plainer songwriting + fulll productions

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 May 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

i can hear that...though in some cases richer = weaker...

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 3 May 2009 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

I knew some people who really worshipped Pod. Absolutely worshipped it. I liked it well enough, but didn't totally flip over it. I didn't realize that Albini had produced that until now. Last Splash was just okay, but Cannonball = A+

I do remember the Safari EP being a little more interesting than either of these.

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Sunday, 3 May 2009 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

kinda like the amps album better than any breeders if we're talking kim deal.

❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉Plaxico❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉ (I know, right?), Sunday, 3 May 2009 10:46 (sixteen years ago)

Might be the Albini drum sound better drummer that gives Pod the edge.

No way you're ever going to convince me that Slint's guy was better than Jim McPherson.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 May 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)

Still, Pod is ever so slightly superior despite the more sluggish, sparse drummery.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 May 2009 10:51 (sixteen years ago)

xxp actually yeah Pacer is better than both of these...

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 3 May 2009 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

but Pacer is like one of my favourite albums of all time so....

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 3 May 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

The snare drum sound Albini got on Pod just fucking kills me every time.

Pod wins by a mile.

Last Splash - MTV rotation

duh

loaded forbear (gabbneb), Sunday, 3 May 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

While I do really like the fuzzy gloss of Last Splash, I think there's just something special about the way Kim's vocals sound on Pod, without any effects or filters. It's quite a voice she's got and on Pod it's like she's in the room with you.

tylerw, Sunday, 3 May 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Preferring Pod has really nothing at all to do with being a hipster.

billstevejim, Sunday, 3 May 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

when i was a painter, i painted you well

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 May 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

too bad i have to die

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 May 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah Pacer

Niles Caulder, Monday, 4 May 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

yea but pacer isn't really the breeders in terms of sound. it's a deal, but it's not the breeders.

Surmounter, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

No way you're ever going to convince me that Slint's guy was better than Jim McPherson.

uh, he totally is!

Mr. Que, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

to be frank i'm a little upset that with all these deal lovers, no one seems to be into kelley

TKD6K

come on ppl

Surmounter, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

I just find Last Splash to ultimately be a lot more enjoyable. "Invisible Man," "Cannonball," "Saints," "No Aloha," motherfuckin' "DIVINE HAMMER," the secret weapon of "Drivin' On 9" . . . it's a clear winner for me.

Also, I saw The Thermals on Friday and they closed their show with "Saints," so Last Splash it is.

naturally unfunny, though mechanically sound (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

pod rocks harder. last splash has more memorable tunes. going with splash.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

you've got 'opened' on there, you win. pod. what a bland title, opened, and what a song

jergins, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 06:24 (sixteen years ago)

Surmounter, Kim once said her biggest regret in her career was not putting Pacer out as a Breeders record

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 08:16 (sixteen years ago)

cottonhead cottonhead

hmm good to know niles....

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

would vote pacer over either of these

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

ha. i was just coming in here to say i'd rather listen the the amps than these two (which are perfectly fine btw)

nashville - spiritual home of the cougar (will), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:44 (sixteen years ago)

i love last splash, have never really listened to pod that much, but pacer is just genius

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

they did empty glasses at last year's show. A+

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

pod is so good

is title tk any good? i had sort of lost interest by that point

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's pretty good

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

and pacer is the amps ish? and is good?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

really so good slocki, more like pod than last splash, i think. some fantastic riffs, and Off You is kind of unreal.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

(tk that is)

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

altho i don't rly know if it's more like pod, it kind of borrows from different places.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

the amps album is great, like a drunker, more raucous breeders basically

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

otm

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

Michael Jones, Saturday, 9 May 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

crazy. though the answer is so obviously POD.
