I kinda feel this way about the original issue of Gene Clark's Roadmaster:

thankfully the (legitimate) CD reissue replaced that monstrosity with a much more dignified shot:

I'd take the original Roadmaster cover over that lazy reissue art any day of the week.

I keep thinking of examples and going "no wait, that IS cd reissue art..."

let it be really is some shitty cover art, that would have never happened if the record had come out while they were still speaking to each other.

When I bought the CD reissue of Minnie Riperton's Come into My Garden, I thought the cover was done for the reissue:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/minnie2.jpg

But it turns out the reissue cover is almost the same as the original, they've just cropped the pic a bit and changed the position of the text. Here's the original cover:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/minnie1.jpg

I don't really understand why the cover was changed in such minimal ways for the reissue, as the original clearly looks better, especially regarding the position of the text. Apparently there's also another reissue which doesn't crop the original pic, but totally changes the text:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/minnie3.jpg

I really don't get these changes at all...

All sorts of dubious mangling of mid-century graphic design was done to the first generation of jazz reissues.

"I don't think they'll be able to make out that type when the cover is shrunk down. Also, to be sure people know this a Mingus record, I know this neat trick in Photoshop"

That Minnie Ripperton: I think it has to do with size of lp vs. size of cd jewel case. If not a legibility issue, a prominence one.

Er, Riperton.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Sunday, 3 May 2009 11:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm tempted to post a large number of Durutti Column albums.

SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Sunday, 3 May 2009 11:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I can understand increasing the text size in the Minnie Riperton cover in order for it to be more legible in the CD cover, but why move it away from the upper left corner where there's actually more space for it than in the middle? Plus the white text looks better against the black background in the upper corner than against the green in the middle.

Tuomas, Sunday, 3 May 2009 11:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Feels like more of a balance thing with the text being that much bigger (imagine the much larger text crammed in the corner, the weight feels way off), but I see what you mean. The originaly def looks way better. My guess is that didn't put that much thought into it.

that=they

I should post at least one:

Haha, originaly=original, sheesh.

but now we're talking about changed reissue covers, and originally the topic was 'covers that suck and LOOK like changed reissues'....anyway, as far as DC goes, it is kind of lame that those reissues had changed covers, but at least they all looked nice.

I always thought this looked like some kinda cheap-ass 10-track comp:

six years pass...

60s/70s equivalent: album covers that kinda look more like cash-in soundalike releases not featuring the original hits by the original artists:

Pet Sounds looks like one of these to me. Maybe because of the big green block, and the two tracks clumsily added to the list. Basically, I'm saying the record company may have used that to cover up the real cover. There were parrots shagging in the trees in the background, or something.

Also, depending on how dubious you thought the Nirvana best-of was,

I worked at CMC International Records for several years before Sanctuary bought the company. They were known for signing bands past their expiration date and whether they supplied their own cover art or asked us to provide, it was obvious that this was not a huge priority for most involved.

Here are a few of their stellar contributions to album art:

Re the UFO album upthread, putting the band members' names on the cover in itself screams "dubious CD reissue." Reminds me of this one:

Bill Dixon's Tapestries for Small Orchestra.

Can't post the image because the label won't allow it. This means the label either knows how horribly awful the cover is and is embarrassed by it; or the label is inexplicably proud of it and doesn't want just anyone posting it willy-nilly.

It's particularly baffling because Dixon was also a brilliant painter whose work was featured on most of his other album covers.
