I Just Listened To A Bunch Of Teardrop Explodes 45s!

I never listened to them in the 80's. I was an echo guy. I picked up a bunch of singles at a junk shop and thought I'd listen to them. I like about half the songs and the rest don't do much for me. What's the best song, in your expert opinion.

BLESS MY COTTON SOCKS!!!!

Gotta be "Reward," but my favorite of theirs remains "Great Dominions"

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

The other day "Treason" popped up in the shuffle and absolutely rocked. So, tonight I'll say "Treason." Tomorrow, could be nearly any of the rest.

comics insults you said, but comics are all i read

I will listen to these (or as many as I have) over the next few days...very fine band, but nothing for me tops the heartwrenching 8-minute thing of wonder that is "...And The Fighting Takes Over/The Great Dominions", a single entity in all but name and one of the finer bits of music spawned during the 1980's.

sorry for british (country matters), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

I enjoy all of these songs and love many of them, but the best is "When I Dream," by some distance, IMHO.

Fishes, You Hit Me With A Flounder (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmm, "Reward," "Treason" or "Read it in Books."

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

When I Dream is like a compressed nugget of TEishness. There's a lot to be said when they calmed down and didn't fill every available gap with ideas, as if in a mad panic that music was about to go out of style. But I like that mad panic.

Sandy Blair, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

"Treason" is the best single qua single. "Reward" might have the edge on it, some days, but I long ago over-played that sucker. "Bouncing Babies" might be my fave song on the list but it feels more like an album track to me. Ditto "Ha Ha I'm Drowning".

Munter S Thompson (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

'Poppies In The Field' with 'Treason' a close second. I'd take Kilimanjaro over any of the first four Bunnymen albums (although the Bunnymen possibly have the better run of singles).

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

Whose version of "Read it in books" is the better?

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

Treason or Reward with Passionate Friend very close-by. Can't decide between Treason or Reward but I think I prefer Strange House In The Snow to Read It In Books I'm going for Reward as the better package.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

Had the first verse of Treason stuck in my head for about the first two months of this year

EMPIRE STATE HYMEN (MPx4A), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:49 (sixteen years ago)

I totally concur with what Gavin said. The Bunnymen did the better Books though.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

"Reward", easily.

I'M IN THE NEWS LIKE HOWARD HUUUUGHES

Come Said The King Boy Pato (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

I like 'Passionate Friend' too, but there are some sounds on that that I just can't get with.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:52 (sixteen years ago)

The KilamonReadBooks is the best one, but of the single versions, I'd give it to the buns.

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

The In-Psychlopedia = proto-rave

Michael B, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

I gotta give 'em another listen. I happen to be reading Cope's autobiography right now. Pretty entertaining.

eleven months pass...

I'm on my once-yearly listen to Wilder; I don't want it to get any less weird through overexposure

fucking awesome

MPx4A, Thursday, 15 April 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for making me queue up their stuff! "Kilimanjaro" is no slouch, either. Really, at this point there should be a 4CD "Complete Teardrop" box.

"When I Dream" is prime love-mix-CD / playlist material. Glorious!
