so was this anyone else's favorite album in like 6th grade? i carried this w/ me everywhere.

mark cl, Thursday, 7 May 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

also it all went downhill for me as a doors fan when i started buying their real albums tho

mark cl, Thursday, 7 May 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

Kind of all crap, really. I mean, why no "Peace Frog"?

I'll begrudgingly pick "The End," if only for "Apocalypse Now."

five to one vs. la woman for me, both these songs are awesome

mark cl, Thursday, 7 May 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

I find this really, really hard. At the moment, I'm feeling 'Strange Days', but I'll have to think on it.

Soukesian, Thursday, 7 May 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

'touch me'

iatee, Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

As for 6th grade, I'd put money on this having been an early favorite of Ian Curtis, Nick Cave, Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch, Andrew Eldritch and about a zillion other postpunk vocalists.

"L.A. Woman" over "Break On Through"

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

five to one vs. la woman for me, both these songs are awesome

And me too! Those two stood out as I contemplated the Morrison was not one of the worst lyricists ever.

bendy, Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

Come on, there's something to love about all of these tunes. Right now, the two I'm thinking of are 'Love Me Two Times' and 'The Crystal Ship' - the latter is some beautiful songwriting.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

And I know it's not there, but what the hell is 'The Soft Parade' all about?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

5 2 1

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

The Crystal Ship, but only because You're Lost, Little Girl or The Spy or Love Street aren't on here.

StanM, Thursday, 7 May 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

accidentally voted "L.A. Woman" when I meant "Love Her Madly"

worm? lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

It's all about the Crystal Ship.

dowd, Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

prob. the only song on here I'd change the radio so as not to hear it would be "Touch Me", o/w these are all good tunes. Maybe I'd have voted for "Waiting for the Sun" if I'd thought more about it: that shit warrants the doomy vibe this band's mythology cultivates.

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

yea i think 'touch me' is probably my least favorite, tho maybe 'hello i love you' is worse. 'hello' is so bland

mark cl, Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

Thinking back to what radio must have sounded like in Jan. 67, I voted "Break on Through" -- it's got more hair on its balls than all their other discography combined, and it's in and out in 2:27.

resistance is feudal (WmC), Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

"When The Music's Over" for me.

Rinfy63, Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

This is the Doors comp to beat:

http://www.woodstock.co.kr/band/doors/doors%20-%20weird%20scenes%20inside%20the%20gold%20mine.jpg

A good cheap vinyl find.

Mark, Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

Alabama Song is "show me the way to the next whiskey bar"? I voted for it prematurely. In actuality I would have voted for "Touch Me".

StanM, Thursday, 7 May 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

does anyone else get bitter when u hear the radio edit of 'light my fire' and they skip over all the jamming in the middle?

richard alpert's tijuana brass (some dude), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:43 (sixteen years ago)

haha whatever dude go ahve a good time listening to that 'soft parade' bs

mark cl, Friday, 8 May 2009 04:55 (sixteen years ago)

tho i would agree there's some weak-ass shit on this album for a greatest hits comp

mark cl, Friday, 8 May 2009 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

I don't feel like searching for other Doors threads to ask this question..

What are their craziest songs, on par with "Not To Touch The Earth?" If they have done more stuff like this song I would like to hear..

billstevejim, Friday, 8 May 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

lol mark

richard alpert's tijuana brass (some dude), Friday, 8 May 2009 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

fwiw this comp is the only Doors release i have ever spent any time with and likely ever will

lol sorry

mark cl, Friday, 8 May 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

haha that was great

mark cl, Friday, 8 May 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

It had to be "Light my fire", one of the first 'long' tracks that works as a single.

Beat "Hey Jude" to the punch (although it was an edit on the single, wasn't it? I do have a 7" w/ full length version)

Mark G, Friday, 8 May 2009 07:12 (sixteen years ago)

Re: Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine

I have a copy of this where side 4 doesn't contain Riders on the Storm, Maggie McGill, Horse Latitudes or When the Music's Over; but instead an odd, drawn out live jam featuring some jazz-y drumming and loads of feedback. Plus a reedy voice drifting in and out which doesn't sound like Morrison.

It's probably a pressing-plant fuck-up, but its always mystified me. I know I'm shooting fish here, but does anyone else have a copy like this?

Discordian, Friday, 8 May 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

Compare it to Love's "Revelations" and see what you think.

Mark G, Friday, 8 May 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

crystal ship for the first 5 words

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 8 May 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

been listening to this a lot lately funnily enough.

d1-3. "The Crystal Ship" – 2:32
d1-4. "People Are Strange" – 2:09
d1-5. "Strange Days" – 3:08
d1-7. "Alabama Song" – 3:18
d1-8. "Five to One" – 4:25
d2-5. "Touch Me" – 3:11
d2-8. "The End" – 11:42

these are prob my favourites. the end has some slightly ropey lyrics but i love the music.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 8 May 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

I'm voting for "Touch Me" but I'd take most of the 3 minute tracks over the drug jams, "L.A. Woman" being the notable exception.

e.e. cummingstonite (Noodle Vague), Friday, 8 May 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for "strange days" since there's no "peace frog" option

MRSA Marchant (get bent), Friday, 8 May 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

I always liked Love Me Two Times a lot.

How old is 6th grade? 12/13? I think I had this on tape about 14 or so, so pretty close I suppose.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 8 May 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

LA Woman

I don't care if 'Peace Frog' was some kind of Kinks rip off, I'd go with it

Surmounter, Friday, 8 May 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

You all are SLEEPING on "Alabama Song". I loved that song before I even heard about "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny".

admiral tub-a-lub (HI DERE), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

I could vote for just about any of these. Right now I'm thinking 'LA Woman'. I'd say it's actually one of the duller songs here, but the breakdown is fantastic - I can't think of any other tune that pulls off that slowing down trick so well

Ismael Klata, Friday, 8 May 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 11 May 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

"People Are Strange", just ahead of "Strange Days". That album was by far their most underrated. Much better than anything else they ever did.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 May 2009 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

LA Woman.

Two Will Get You Three (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

"When the Music's Over"

This was my favorite album when I was five. I still really love this band. Fuck the haters. They don't sound like anything else out there.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

My cd for LA Woman (or Waiting For The Sun - I can't remember) has the other cd's track listing printed on it. I wonder if that makes it worth anything.

Mulvaney, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

Weird Scenes had "You Need Meat" with Ray singing. What could be more essential than that? I've obsessively listened to all the Morrison albums but never felt even the slightest inclination to hear Full Circle of Other Voices...am I missing anything...I'm Horny, I'm Stoned sounds like it might be a winner...

OCONDOR (Pt.1), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

I'm Horny, I'm Stoned, I'm Jim.

(I know...)

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

"Love Me Two Times" ... probably, tough choice, I always look forward to hearing that one though. Also "Touch Me" and "Unknown Soldier".

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 09:22 (sixteen years ago)

Out of "Love Me Two Times", "L.A. Woman", "Touch Me" and "Love Her Madly" I think I'll go with the latter. Excellent driving music (as is "L.A. Woman"), fine fine arrangement with the piano/guitar/organ/bass creating something that's solid, lush, propulsive and joyous at once.

willem, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, yeah, "Love Her Madly" is another great one

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 09:38 (sixteen years ago)

"Touch Me" is my fave - crazy sax solo!

dog latin, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)

'Riders on the Storm' because it's just such a stone groove - I even forgave the 'squirming like a toad' line

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

"Break on Thru" for me - first track, first album, and they've already got that dynamic tension-release thing in effect. Plus I like how Morrison throws in that "Everybody loves my baby" stuff, apropos of absolutely nothing

I wish he hadn't adapted my critique of his "ilxor" moniker (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

I went w/"Waiting For The Sun" since it hasn't been done to death like so many of the other tracks, and it's great anyway.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

It's alos probably one of the only album title tracks that appeared two albums later rather than one (ala "Dry", "Houses of The Holy" etc.)

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

Voted "Break On Through." If they had only just released that and then broke up it would be the greatest of all Nuggets tracks.

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

LA Woman? Really?

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for it

mark cl, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, fair enough, I've nothing against it, just "is it really so many people's favourite?"

Guess it is.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

One thing about LA Woman is that nothing else really sounds like it, not even other Doors songs.

Mark, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

I should've voted for "Strange Days."

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

This was my grandmother's favorite band/album.

THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

Plus I like how Morrison throws in that "Everybody loves my baby" stuff, apropos of absolutely nothing
I was listening to classic rock radio in Memphis (Rock 103: The Eagle, lol) and they played the original, unedited take of "Break on Through" and after Jim does the "Everybody/loves my baby/Everybody/Loves my baby" he said "She gets HIIIIGH, She gets HIIIIIGH" and it kind of freaked me out. I was so used to hearing just "She get....She get..." and I actually kind of preferred the weird stutter effect of the edit. But the whole thing made a lot more sense after the grand reveal.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

I think it was on an episode of the syndicated oldies program FLASHBACK.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

They've done the same thing with The End on the remasters, I believe. It's a different mix with Morrison's vocals up front and with the orgasmatron turned way up. I haven't been in the mood to relive that opus in awhile, but if I was I think I'd prefer the familiar one. But then I also prefer the shitty reverb-ed up US editions of the Beatles.

What can I say? I'm a Freedom Rock purist.

OCONDOR (Pt.1), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

Whoever the other person who voted for "Alabama Song" is, you are awesome.

fudd on the low (stevie), Thursday, 14 May 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

xp hey that was me! i am awesome!! what a cool song.

jesus is the man (jabba hands), Thursday, 14 May 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)

what release are the uncensored break on through and the end on?

The remixed/remastered edition of the debut issued by Rhino in the Perception box and as a single disc w/bonus trax.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 14 May 2009 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

from what I can see, the remastered versions on Rhino of The Doors first album have Break On Through and The End...I don't think they issue it the old way anymore! But I'm not 100 percent sure on this. I just know the version I have copyrighted 2006 and 2007 have only the new mixes...listed as Rhino/ Elektra and DMC (Doors Music Company).
