poll that FASCIST GROOVE THANG

Martyn Ware: "We were going through the disco charts in Record Mirror, picking out all the words from those absurd disco titles. We were laughing at those phrases, thinking they're pretty good, and then we just chucked in 'How Much Longer Must We Tolerate This Fascist Groove Thang.' We were pissing ourselves for days. Glenn had to sing it line by line in the studio. We've got loads of outtakes of him cracking up whilst singing. It was 'hot you ass I feel your power' that did him ... a classic stupid line."
Glenn Gregory: "The plan for America is to re-record the vocals and call it 'Commie Groove Thang.' It's not that we're wet liberals, it's just that America is only good for one thing and that's taking the money off them. They don't deserve any better. We'll be taking the money out of them. They have plenty of money and not much taste. Over there we just want to sell. In Britain we want to impress."

the diptych of "hot you ass i feel your power/hitler proves that funky stuff" is a kind of high art.

People forget that:

1) It was meant as one almighty joke at the time
2) That 'political' lyric seemed incongruous at the time.

Subsequently, it's joke has been distilled until lost...

Jokes have a half-life you know, and when it's gone, what's left in the majority of 'joke' songs is nothing. In this case, what's left is a great record and a pithy lyric. It shares something with "lonely this christmas" as being a 'funny' record that outlasted it's joke to end up meaning something to people. (That's all it shares though)...

i remember when i got this album my dad loved this song. when his friends came over he'd make them listen to it, cracking up all the way through.

Would have love for the "Reagan President Elect/Fascist God in motion" combination, but that one is sadly parted into two here, and the two lines are only great together.

Glenn Gregory: "The plan for America is to re-record the vocals and call it 'Commie Groove Thang.'

They never did this.

I'm embarassed to say I STILL haven't heard Penthouse & Pavement yet. I'm going to correct this very soon because people have recommended it to me. Whenever I think of this song, though, I think of the original B.E.F. version.

I'd prefer a "Let's All Make A Bomb" poll. Easily the better tune.

"Let's All Make a Bomb" is one of the greatest lyrics ever!
