Discussion on autogoon, but surely merits its own thread.

Turntables is great; still acclimatizing the rest.

thoughts?

also discussion on R&B...

the first eight or so tracks from "ciara to the stage" through "work" are varying degrees of great (not including "like a surgeon which is godawful), but it reaaallllly loses steam after that. i'm sure the rest will grow on me though

k3vin k., Friday, 8 May 2009 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

"lover's thing" is fucking great, too, terius operating on his own level imo

k3vin k., Friday, 8 May 2009 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

The temerity of Ciara and Missy kind of half-assedly revisiting Work It with a collabo called Work is a quarter lame and three quarters awesome.

"I Don't Remember" and "Keep Dancin' On Me" are my fave tracks off this... and "Like A Surgeon", which I love - it reminds me of early-Timbaland/Aaliyah circa-One In A Million.

ah, why don't you like it?

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

right now it sounds to me like the ballads on this are really good and the dance tracks are only okay

triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

im not usually the guy who's even big on lyrics in the first place, but the sex/surgeon puns are just soo dumb i can't get past it. i said on the r&b thread it's like 77 wrote a ciara song.
also i just dont hear any hook i can really get with in there, it seems to meander on and on until it decides to come back to that chorus which i find really uninteresting

k3vin k., Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

The only tracks I don't fuck with are "Love Sex Magic" and "G Is For Girl".. otherwise, it's a pretty solid if not AMAZING album. I think if it hadn't all been leaked for like a year it'd feel more fresh and exciting, as it is it's a minor mis-step but I'm sure her 4th album will get her back on track. I sort of agree that the mids and ballads are the stronger tracks on this one, but I kind of felt that way about The Evolution as well (though of course "Bang It Up" & "I Proceed" are wicked uptempos)... I think the sensual midtempo is Ciara's strongpoint actually.

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

What idiot put this thing together? It's one of the worst sequenced albums I've ever heard, given that it plods and drags through the first half and absolutely FLIES through the second half.

She should let The Dream do the entirety of her next record as his enormous fluffy production clouds fit her barely-there voice far better than anyone else here.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

"Echo" being left off the main tracklist is ridiculous btw

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

I think if it hadn't all been leaked for like a year it'd feel more fresh and exciting, as it is it's a minor mis-step but I'm sure her 4th album will get her back on track

yeah you may be right but it's still disappointing to me cuz this was supposed to be her ~shit~, you know? i do really like this album but anything less than mindblowing is disappointing really

k3vin k., Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

Also I think Young Jeezy narrowly edges out Tom Waits and Bob Dylan at the top of my list of people who should never, ever be allowed near autotune. He sounds ridiculous.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

"work" and "pucker up" and the ones like that just fall kinda flat to me

"ciara to the stage", "keep dancing" and ESPECIALLY "lover's thing" sound like the best

triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

What idiot put this thing together? It's one of the worst sequenced albums I've ever heard, given that it plods and drags through the first half and absolutely FLIES through the second half.

lol i was gonna completely agree w/ u but it's the second half that i can't get with right now

k3vin k., Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

yeah "echo" is straight up inexcusable and like i said she's soooo great over airy ballads - she should just make a whole album of those imo

and stuff on the leak is so much better - "rattla" and "click flash" for starters

triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

xp yeah I know, I was so excited for this project at first and everything about it practically has been disastrous. And now it's going to sell barely 70K copies first week... it's really sad actually, I think if they'd released "High Price" as the first single like they planned on doing then none of this would've happened.

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

ESPECIALLY "lover's thing"

knew you'd love this

k3vin k., Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

"I Don't Remember" is already one of my favorite Polow productions... kind of reminds me of Goldfrapp

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

and stuff on the leak is so much better - "rattla" and "click flash" for starters

Not including these two, especially Click Flash, is inexcusable.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah "Lover's Thing" is nice, but it's kind of a standard L.O.S. beat so I can't get that excited about it... "Keep Dancin' On Me" on the other hand... MASSIVE.

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

btw - have los da maestro and terius ever made a song that's not a non-classic? they're like... 9 for 9 or something?

triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

er that's not a classic i guess i mean

triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

one of my favorite leaks:

sex and gambling (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 May 2009 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

ack, too drunk to commmennntate now but:

I think if it hadn't all been leaked for like a year it'd feel more fresh and exciting

and

I think if they'd released "High Price" as the first single like they planned on doing then none of this would've happened.

otm.

i think it's a really good album...actually a lot better than i was expecting after the botched campaign. sequencing is pretty perfect, dunno what matt is on about! big insane uptempos ==> slow down ==> club jams ==> abstract close. obv 'echo' and 'i'm on' should be on the album proper but what can one do...

interesting: 'turntables', despite no promotion in its own right whatsoever, is in the UK itunes top 40. looks like leaving cbreezy on it was a good sales tactic :/ and also :(

lex pretend, Saturday, 9 May 2009 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

"i want to beat your face in with a vinyl record, baby" is a pretty romantic lyric, dunno what you're on about lex

johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 May 2009 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

"I don't remember" is gorgeous. By very far my fave on this (which otherwise is pretty meh after a few listens).
It has a bit of the sweet/melancholia vibe of "why should I be sad" on britney's blackout.

i've been comparing keri's "where did he go" to "why should i be sad" a lot in my mind.

i'm excited to hear this album in more depth, can't really comment yet.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

we put this on last night, and had to turn it off after the 7th or 8th track and put on the keri album.

the most interesting thing i heard was Work. and i didn't completely mind Like a surgeon.

Surmounter, Friday, 15 May 2009 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

but yeah my bf and i defffinitely turned off by it. not even the production was really happening for me.

Surmounter, Friday, 15 May 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

"Turnin' Me On" is better than anything on Ciara's album. Too bad I find it impossible to give a shit about the rest of Keri's.

thousands of bears are distraught (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 06:45 (sixteen years ago)

haven't listened to the new ciara all that much. (which I should get on but I kinda burned out on all of the leaks) but I always feel like keri's tracks drag when I listen to in a perfect world because they're often just too freakin' long. like, I understand that there are two big guests on "knock you down" but does this song really warrant its 5mins+ running time? it would be so much stronger at 3-4mins.

agreed that the standouts on both albums are comparable.

original bgm, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

knock you down needs to DROP KANYE and it's a top ten of the year for me.

an average room of dentists (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 2 July 2009 04:29 (sixteen years ago)

i believe you - i just don't get how you could like ne-yo on "knock you down" but none of his hit singles

"single"

k3vin k., Thursday, 2 July 2009 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

well, what I like on Knock You Down was the slow burn of the complex roller coaster that his voice takes on each of the individual verses and then the great climax that he carries through in his crooning on the chorus.
It doesn't hurt that I think Knock You Down has a much more solid musical heart than any of those other songs. I was impressed for once by his capabilities and range; mostly (as I've harped on at length in the Chris Brown thread) I find Ne-Yo really unremarkable and kinda bland.
Still keeping an open mind though.

ajghjhfkd i still can't believe how much they fucked this campaign up, like how much could've gone right for her if they'd stuck with "high price" as the lead single, and "pucker up" was all swag swag swag several years before everything was

HIGH PRICE with big budget action video
ECHO as summer jam
PUCKER UP
WORK with video as it was

how do you fuck that up

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 March 2013 11:05 (thirteen years ago)

as shoulda coulda woulda hit parades go i don't find that one very convincing. didn't they try to launch the album with "High Priced 'Oh' Rewrite" and it totally didn't work? at the moment Ciara's got probably her most buzzed about single in ages and you're still reliving the flops and trying to analyze how it might've gone differently.

some dude, Thursday, 7 March 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

"high price" sounds literally nothing like "oh", and they didn't try to do anything with it

they tried to launch it with "go girl", failed, eventually got it off the ground with the very safe "love sex magic"

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 March 2013 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

i heard "high price" on the radio a tiny lil bit, i assumed they made some attempt at making it a hit. it's not running off the "oh" template as obviously as all her little "promise" knockoffs but it's pretty clearly on the same vibe imo.

some dude, Thursday, 7 March 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

iirc it leaked, was slated as the single, was never made a single (never sent to itunes etc) and then 5 million delays ensued

the entire vibe is so different, "oh" is minimal and restrained and ciara's icy-cold, "high price" is explosive and huge-sounding and OTT and ciara's doing her nut in this mental operatic voice

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 March 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
