OPO: Elvis Costello

Right, I need to retreat to a thread where I'm less likely to start a brush fire of name-calling, ageism, acrimony and inexplicable H.P. Lovecraft allusions. Thus, I'm hijacking the OPO/POO bandwagon: One from the estimable Declan MacManus.....I'm going with "Beyond Belief." And you...?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett to thread!

He was actually one of the first artists who came to mind at the dawn of POO! (oh so shortly ago). So many I love.. I'll go with "Our Little Angel", tho I don't know if I'm being contrary or not. It really is one of my favorites.

Keiko, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, why did I know I'd be summoned? "I Want You," though mostly on the basis on the couple of cover versions I've heard. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to pick "I Want You," just because it's stuck in my mind after renting the Winterbottom movie of the same name recently. Maybe -- "Accidents Will Happen" even though it's way too repetitive.

Tim DiGravina, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Big Tears". But I'm sure I'm forgetting something and I'll probably change my answer tomorrow.

Arthra Joan Streisand, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything's repetitive after listening to "I Want You" ;-)

"Party Girl"

earlnash, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'tramp the dirt down' for the lyrics and 'town cryer' for the tune.

over rated barely covers it.

piscesboy, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A left-field choice, but "I Hope You're Happy Now."

great thread - i am a recent but very quickly becoming obsessed ec fan, and i don't know most of these songs.

i'm gonna go with the demo version of 'lip service' from the MAIT bonus thing.

Matos is on point. "Man Out Of Time"

paul, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His cover of "Girl Talk". Best cover evah.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pills and Soap." I think I would have given up on Elvis long ago if it weren't for this song.

Justyn Dillingham, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he WROTE "Girls Talk"

M Matos, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but he gave it to Dave Edmunds first. It's like Willie Nelson covering "Crazy".

J Blount, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blood and Chocolate owns this thread so far.

"Riot Act"

J, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"tokyo storm warning" for "death wears a big hat because he is a big bloke" and "love for tender" because it is just so much FUN! but probably "town cryer" or "beyond belief" - wonderful, wonderful songs...

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is easy. Shipbuilding sang by Robert Wyatt. Shipbuilding is one of the most touching melodies in pop. But I really don't like Costello's voice.

as much as the man has fallen in my esteem because of his lack of a quality filter over the past 15 years, it's almost impossible for me to only pick one song of his, or even only 10 or 20, there are so many incredible ones.

at the moment I'll say Couldn't CAll It Unexpected
