I have every one of those albums bar one, and I suspect it's the one which would win this poll.

Public Enemy

neu hollywood (Eric H.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Lots of great albums, a few horrible ones. Voted "OK Computer", which will probably remain the best Radiohead ever did forever.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 10 May 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

xpost, no, 'Slanted and Enchanted'.

featuring Strawberry and the Shortcakes (Billy Dods), Sunday, 10 May 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, no that's just what I voted for.

neu hollywood (Eric H.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

between PE & Radiohead for me. Most of this stuff makes me want to listen to Bathtub Shitter til my eyes bleed.

Interesting. What do you think of OK Computer Geir? Good album?

The 13 I know are all actually pretty good.

Sundar, Sunday, 10 May 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but lol canon what u expect

some dude, don't make it dad (k3vin k.), Monday, 11 May 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

I was a "young adult" the 90s and listened to tons of records but somehow have only managed to hear five of these straight through: the two Nirvana records, REM, Primal Scream, Pavement. Have probably a few times in my life heard the Beck or the PE. Of these, Pavement wins easily. Will watch poll closely to see what I missed.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 11 May 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

90s list >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 00s list

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 11 May 2009 01:02 (sixteen years ago)

This made me remember getting challenged by Chuck Eddy on the idea of "dated" music being a defensible critique. But Christ, when I try to listen to Entroducing or anything by Tricky or uh… pretty much all of this list, all I can think is that these did not age well. Stuff that sounded innovative when I was 14 now sounds (GASP) boring as shit. I guess it's just indicative that when I was a teenager, I had very little perspective on what would be a classic for all time and what would just sound like slang my parents use.

All that bullshit aside, I still dig the REM, In Utero, and Bends. The other Critical Classix (MBV, MA, Pavement, OK Computer), I just never really got into.

THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Monday, 11 May 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

i still like pretty much all of these, maybe dont feel the need to listen to them often, but i dont dislike any of them. Beck is the only one i havent played in years. Mellow Gold was the only album of his i really liked.
In Utero is the best here.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 11 May 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)

ya, i just voted in utero

matinee, Monday, 11 May 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)

i voted which has had its most permanent effect on me, which is Maxinquaye. but if we're talking most accalimed, it has to be OK Computer.

the table is the table, Monday, 11 May 2009 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

1. Slanted and Enchanted
2. Nevermind
3. Automatic For The People

The main problem with that list is it's disproportionally weighted to the first half of the decade. But whateverdude. There are bigger problems in the world.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 11 May 2009 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

good albums, but i don't like the poll concept at all.

the sound of mu (sic), Monday, 11 May 2009 02:56 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of solid records in here that I just wore the fuck out and feel like I can't vote for in good conscience, though I've probably listened to Odelay as many times as anything else I own. And then a few things that I didn't really get into until this decade (the Radiohead records, Achtung Baby)... but I fell in love with Automatic in the tail end of the 90s and still deeply enjoy all the parts of it that I did then. And a few bits have really deepened for me - so R.E.M. all the way.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 11 May 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

Voted Loveless, then shrugged.

Popture, Monday, 11 May 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

3 of these in my own top 5 probably (Shadow, Tricky and Portishead)

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 11 May 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

my top 5:

Radiohead: OK Computer
Pulp: Different Class
Oasis: (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
My Bloody Valentine: Loveless
Primal Scream: Screamadelica

Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted (i liked their second album better...)

The list given at the top is awful.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah...there's a few good ones up there though...voted In Utero

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

There was a long time when I'd absolutely have voted for Loveless, but today I voted for Dummy. I think of most of these as either pretty great or reasonably good. (The ones I don't like: Odelay, Screamadelica, and for some reason I never really cared either way about In Utero. Also having BOTH of the first two Oasis albums on a Top 20 is kinda straining my opinion that they were both, you know, reasonably fun and likable.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

(i like loveless, nevermind, automatic, and odelay as well...)

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

I will admit I like the Bends.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

loveless, slanted, different class, dummy in that order for me

some dude, don't make it dad (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

the tropes in In Utero are mindblowing...it's like K. Cobain was channeling Sylvia Plath or something...

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

(btw The Bends was my favourite album when I was 15 but I can't hear it anymore)

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

(and I was hanging out with people in '00, '01 who were obssessed with Down & COC...dont remember much about NOLA outside of "Stone the Crow", but I really loved Wiseblood the first time hearing it...)

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

(America's Volume Dealer has some decent stuff on it as well...)

even corpse management will be at risk (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

its kinda silly to say lol canon recs who gives a shit. of course most recs have aged, thats inevitable. still i think lots of these recs are still pretty ace and close to my heart. most of all tricky and portishead and massive attack

i will prob pick oasis just to skew the poll. hahah

NOLA's real strong all the way through. I heard "Temptation's Wings" on xm's metal station on the way into work today, and it's burrowed itself in my brain.

xxpost

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I only heard NOLA all the way through a couple of times, and I think I might have been high on hash both of these times...

definitely make me wanna 5l5k it now though....

was voting 'in utero' til i saw 'endtroducing.' 'endtroducing' is really something special

mark cl, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

If you get the disk it's decorated with a sweet, blurry picture of downtown NO with the Superdome in the middle of it. Worth the $5 you can probably get it used for. Plus it's absolutely blistering from note one.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah this list is really limited in that it ignores a lot of what made the '90s a good decade for music but at least half are great records which I'd still get something out of today. I'd go with Automatic For The People, narrowly over In Utero. Both would be shoo-ins for my own Top 20 of the decade at least.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

xpost I remember the picture on the CD...it is really cool...I will prolley buy it, but I just wanted to listen to it first...don't worry I don't plan on stealing any money from Phil and Pepper's pockets; they're not that rich :)

Nice spread of votes at least. Each one of them got votes. Maybe not so strange as they are all very much in the "canon".

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 17 May 2009 06:32 (sixteen years ago)

Nice results, these.
