Worst Beach Boys Song on 15 Big Ones - Part 4 in an Ongoing Series

After a three year hiatus (!) the Boys dropped this one - a mess of covers and leftovers, slathered in synthesizers and backed by a bunch of old Wrecking Crew regulars. Not as bad as it could be, Brian scored a few more gems with his great "songs-about-nothin" style at least.

never liked the original Just Once in My Life and I don't think the Boys improved on it, gotta go with that. Just not that great a song, its a mess melodically and feels really sluggish.

A lot of bad stuff on this -- but for my money, TM Song is definitely NOT THE ANSWER. Neither is Susie Cincinatti.

Oh god, this is a pretty terrible album, but 'Just Once In My Life' takes the biscuit for just being plain painful to listen to. The bit where Brian (or is it Dennis?) grunts "and baby, bay-eh-by" just showcases how far the mighty had fallen by that point. I think I remember reading in the cd booklet that the song was a big hit with Kraftwerk though. To its credit, I think I can hear a little 'Trans Europe Express' in the production.

Runner up goes to 'Chapel Of Love', which is a horrible song anyway but the Boys manage to make a pigs ear of it too. The only version I can stomach is Jonathan Richman's to be honest.

The album's not all bad though - 'Everyone's In Love With You' and 'TM Song' are some of Mike Love's better offerings and the argument at the start of the latter never fails to make me laugh. 'It's OK' and 'Had To Phone Ya' are pretty cute too.

"That Same Song" is one of those awful "history of music" songs that...well, has no idea about the history of music.

^^^redeemed by its very lyrical insanity, I think. Gregorian chants were a real big thing!

i like the way they had to add harmony to gregorian chants.

I often go back in time with rhythm and rhyme myself

If there's a more hideous song in their catalogue, I haven't heard it.

BTW, dig the clip of VDP in the straw hat and tank top in front of some strip mall (where Gold Star used to be, IIRC) at the beginning of that clip.

Oh god that clip! What a waste of a gospel choir. Also, it feels like it's going on 10 minutes longer than it actually does.

Landslide
