man this is a beautiful album. Bruce Johnston delivers the stinkers here, imho. Guy's not as odious as Mike Love but he really laid on the sap with the boys, and not in a good way.

voting Deirdre, which is slightly worse than Tears in the Morning and lacking the latter's sweet harmonies

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

They are probably the two worst songs on there but I still like them!

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

I've always wondered what the fuck is up with the ineplicable french bits in At My Window

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

Spanish, you mean?

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

It's the Beach Boys, it's not supposed to be sensible

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

at my window and add some music are the ones i usually skip

velko, Friday, 15 May 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

^ Crazy man.

Voted "Tears".

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

This is a great album... except for the Bruce songs, which I dislike foe the same reason I dislike Disney Girls. The whole delivery -- voice, music, sentiment -- is sickly on both songs. Voted Deirdre.

fit and working again, Friday, 15 May 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

It's french for 'The sparrow came and sat at my window'.

fit and working again, Friday, 15 May 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

I know what it is, its just that every time I hear it it seems really random

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

Despite being a pretty big BB stan, I never ever listen to this album. Like...all the songs are fairly competent but none of them are really...transcendent?

But yeah, clearly it's either Tears or Deirdre.

iatee, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

ahh poor Bruce Johnston, all the hate. Disney Girls is one of my Beach Boys favourites (as is The Nearest Faraway Place) must admit I've never heard Sunflower... ;)

Ludo, Friday, 15 May 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

Good thing about the twofer reissue is you can play this as a kind of warm-up for Surf's Up. Tbh I've probably only ever just played the whole cd through rather than listening to the individual albums, so I really can't pick a worst song from this, as SDT just overwhelms the whole experience. Love Johnston's songs, Tears is kind of ridiculous though, especially the 'so you've moved to Europe' > here's an accordion, that's what Europe sounds like bit. But I love it.

^^^lolz A+

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

Actually as a red-haired European I can probably relate to this Beach Boys the most.

Stryder's on the Orme (j.o.n.a), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

gah Beach Boys album.

Stryder's on the Orme (j.o.n.a), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

Not that I'm called Deirdre, or a girl. Gah this is 3 posts I probably should've thought more about.

Stryder's on the Orme (j.o.n.a), Friday, 15 May 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

Don't like "Slip On Through" too much, so I went for that one. Most of this album is really great though.

This is a great album... except for the Bruce songs, which I dislike foe the same reason I dislike Disney Girls. The whole delivery -- voice, music, sentiment -- is sickly on both songs.

I like his songs on "Sunflower" better because they have the harmonies that "Disney Girls" lack.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 15 May 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

really consistent album. "Add Some Music" has the worst lyrics, but i voted for "Cool Cool Water", an uncompleted Smile song that still seems incomplete here.

abanana, Friday, 15 May 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

The bridge in "Add Some Music" almost ruins it -- "MUSIC!!! IS IN!!! MY SOOOOOOOOUUUUUULLLL!"...ugh.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 16 May 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

"Cool, Cool, Water" is gorgeous- probably in my Beach Boy's top ten. Drenched in harmonies and reverb, eerie and peaceful at the same time.

"In an ocean or in a glass, cool water is such a gas."

ColinO, Saturday, 16 May 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, "Tears in the Morning" gets my pick- I kinda like "Deirdre."

ColinO, Saturday, 16 May 2009 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

What he said.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 16 May 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Cool Cool Water is one of the highlights for me.

fit and working again, Saturday, 16 May 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

i kinda like tears in the morning. this thread is making me take a look at myself

Billy Pilgrim, Saturday, 16 May 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

Every song is perfect except the horrid dreary Dennis sludge of Got To Know The Woman.

harveyw, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

nah that's the bit at the end where he talks about how you gotta c'mon and do the chicken

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 May 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

that's REDEEMED BY the bit at the end

High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 May 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Got To Know The Woman" - it's this album's Student Demonstration Time. A hoary old (what I assume is) Mike Love track just sat plonk in the middle of a really great Beach Boys record.

dog latin, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

oops, sorry, Dennis.

dog latin, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

i had no idea "tears in the morning" was not loved more on here. it's a good song!

dog latin, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Got to Know the Woman (along with and At My Window) would be my next choice for worst after the Bruce songs.

fit and working again, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

"So you moved out UP to Europe" always bothers me.

fit and working again, Monday, 18 May 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, everyone knows Europe is to the left...

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 18 May 2009 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

I think Canada and Europe are interchangeable for Californians

sure why not

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 May 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

altho I'm kinda surprised at the hate for Got to Know the Woman

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 May 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

i would have voted 'it's about time'. it's virtually cock-rock.

i really enjoy deirdre. a lot of beatles in this song. plus a lot of warmth.

charlie h, Friday, 5 August 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, why didn't I vote It's About Time? And how could people hate on Deirdre? It's really sweet. Unfortunate name notwithstanding.

Why'd You Wanna Tweet Me So Bad? (dog latin), Saturday, 6 August 2011 08:58 (fourteen years ago)

dunno how anyone could vote Cool Cool Water

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 16:57 (eleven years ago)

I've never quite understood the love for this album, which strikes me as a *good* album by a band very influenced by the Beach Boys. As opposed to Surf's Up, which is a flawed album that could only have been made by the Beach Boys

Dominique, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:52 (eleven years ago)

Nah, it's definetely the Beach Boys. The love is because there are like 5 really amazing songs which is more than most albums. Then half of the rest are really good. I don't really understand how anyone could vote for anything other than Deirdre, Got To Know the Woman or Add Some Music. The rest is fantastic.

everything, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:57 (eleven years ago)

I mean, how could Cool Cool Water, Tears in the Morning, This Whole World etc be anybody other than the Beach Boys? They are absolutely archetypical BB numbers.

everything, Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:00 (eleven years ago)

My faves on this are "Our Sweet Love" and "This Whole World" (which actually does seem to set some kind of B.Wilson record for most chord changes), but I think part of what turns me off is the "modernity" of the production. 20/20 started this, but there's something about it that places them in a classic rock context which robs them of their richness (?), for lack of a better word

Dominique, Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:01 (eleven years ago)

WTF? Deirdre is so not the worst song on this.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Thursday, 5 December 2013 12:07 (eleven years ago)

20/20 is def the "classic rock" Beach Boys album but I'm not hearing it so much on Sunflower. It definitely seems like a more 'mature' album, or one which accepts itself as being of mature people. The second side rivals that of Beach Boys Today! for being pretty much a perfect run of songs.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Thursday, 5 December 2013 12:10 (eleven years ago)

How anyone could vote for Tears in the Morning as well.. cannibals.

The only crap songs are Got To Know The Woman and It's About Time (which I can't recall at all right now?)

a beef supreme (dog latin), Thursday, 5 December 2013 12:12 (eleven years ago)

No, "It's About Time" is good. Anyway I like both of us those songs, so what do I know!

Saturated with working class intelligence and not afraid to show it (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 December 2013 12:42 (eleven years ago)

'It's About Time' is one of my highlights of this album!

zip-a-dee-doo-dah, motherfucker! (Turrican), Thursday, 5 December 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago)

god i can't remember it at all.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Thursday, 5 December 2013 14:56 (eleven years ago)

All I Wanna Do is pretty gr8

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 03:36 (eleven years ago)

"all i wanna do" is fantastic indeed, and better than 20/20's todd rundgren-esque "all i want to do." actually, come to think of it, "all i wanna do" could go on any of the first three sides of something/anything, while "all i want to do" would work on side 4.

i play too fast (which is the sign of an amateur) (fact checking cuz), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 08:53 (eleven years ago)

eight years pass...

i don't actually dislike the song (though fuck Bruce Johnston), but god, the way he sings "loooooooooooooad" drives me nuts.

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 20:37 (three years ago)

The two songs I've omitted from this are "Got to Know the Woman" and "It's About Time". I can't stand the key changes on the former.
The two Bruce songs have a certain charm for me, they're easier to take than "Disney Girls".

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 1 June 2022 02:50 (three years ago)

Bruce himself sounds like a cock, but I like Bruce's songs, here and elsewhere. Deirdre is probably the nothingiest of them, and sounds a bit like the theme tune for a crap 70s sitcom called Deirdre, but the "lots of people miss..." chord change is quite lovely.

"Got to Know A Woman" is the real clunker on here for me, such an obnoxious and embarassing coke song, and it's a shame it's so early in the tracklisting, and yet I find it endearing, just like Student Demonstration Time on Surf's Up, and I'd miss it if it was gone.

I guess there's a distinction between bad songs that louse up an album (e.g. "My Little Problem" on All Shook Down) versus bad songs that are still an important part of the whole.
