Sorrow, but this is easily his weakest 70s album. And on the other albums, his covers are almost always the weakest track (Wild Is The Wind being the exception that proves the rule).

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

hum. I think I haven't listened to this for 15 years.
Didn't like it much at the time. pretty meh.
I'm going to listen to it again and see.

AleXTC, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

Back then, his version of "Let's spend the nighttogethUH!" was very annoying.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

Pinups came out in '73, so these are covers of songs from 6-9 years earlier. Imagine someone making an album of their favorite songs from 2000 - 2003 today.

Brio, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

And it's kind of in keeping with the bands he's covering - they were all covering blues and R&B that was often just a couple of years old or less.

Brio, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

Well Bowie was covering Morrissey and the Pixies in the 90s...

I'm listening to Pinups now on Spotify, and it's not terribly good. You have to wonder why he persisted with the covers. Almost the only flaw of his 70s recording career.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

his version of "let's spend the night" is AWFUL ! (which is a tour de force since I like both bowie and the stones)

AleXTC, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

xpost.

covering a contemporary song or too is a bit different than recording a whole album of just-slightly-old songs.

Metallica did it too with Garage Days Re-revisited... all that stuff was pretty recent too. Anyone else?

Brio, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

I'm half way through Pinups now and I haven't heard anything that matches the originals...

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

Some of "Spaghetti incident?" werenit?

As upthread, "Sorrow" is pretty good.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

wasn't pin up released for some contractual reasons or something ?

AleXTC, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

I think a better poll would be which of these original songs is the best.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

@Brio

I guess a 1973 cover album of rock songs is necessarily going to be of just-slightly-old-songs...

Now listening to Sorrow, and it's the 1st song on this album that holds up.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

''I Can't Explain''. Love the sax riffing, stomper of a song. Mom and sis swooned over ''Sorrow'', never particularly liked that one myself.

"B1 is the one for me" (willem), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

Still no new Bowie album since 2003!

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

I hope he comes out with at least one more. "Reality" wouldn't be a particularly great note to part on.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

Onto the last song now, the pretty awful Where Have All The Good Times Gone. I can't imagine I'll want to listen to this album again anytime soon.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

15 years, just like me !

AleXTC, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

Never heard the original but I went for 'I wish you would' for Mick Ronson's solo at the end, insane

vain_bowers, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Now listening to the original of Sorrow, by the Merseybeats. The Bowie version is definitely an improvement. Don't think you can say that about any of the other Pinups tracks.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

I voted See Emily Play but what I really meant is Sorrow.. I love that song so much, it's one of my favourite Bowie songs.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah it is a good thing I know 'Sorrow' from the singles comp or I don't think I would've listened all the way through this album to get to it.

cant go with u too many bees (Abbott), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

He's cover of It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City is incredible and I quite enjoyed Cactus too.

Pin ups is shit though.

Popture, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Amazingly, he does a good version of "See Emily Play", so I go for that one.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

Still no new Bowie album since 2003!

Sure. What happened? He used to be so profilic. The biggest gap earlier was between "...Hours" and "Heathen" (not counting his mid 80s gap, which was filled with a lot of film music), but 6 years is ages in the case of Bowie!

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

He had a minor heart attack in 2004, due to years of touring etc, apparently.

So, just cameo appearances and one-offs since then.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't heard this album since I was a nipper but I used to like "See Emily Play", I hadn't heard the original then

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Thursday, 21 May 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't think I'd heard anything on here but The Who songs before I heard this as a kid.

Brio, Thursday, 21 May 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

Check out Everything's Alright...it's very good
