iatee, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

man see united (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

best: dammit
worst: stay together for the kids

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

Good lord do I hate this band, but I have to go with "All The Small Things."

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

blink-182 seems like an odd band to waste negative energy on, but i can def understand not feeling their shit

man see united (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

dammit for life

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

"I miss you", just for being different.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

Who would have guessed that these guys would become Gen Y's most influential band? Every band with a member under the age of 25 claims them as an influence.

I picked the obvious one- All The Small Things.

makeitpop, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

whats my age again
the rock show

i still remember the first time i heard dammit tbh

sitting on the bus on the way to class in middle school and it came on the radio and i was just in fuckin awe

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 21 May 2009 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

kinda falls in 2 categories for, ones i'm kinda sick of but still essentially like, and ones i wish i heard more

top 5 ones i never hear on the radio:
Down
Josie
Always
First Date
Not Now

top 5 ones i always hear on the radio:
Dammit
Adam's Song
I Miss You
What's My Age Again
All The Small Things

Shiny H. Peoplegarden (some dude), Thursday, 21 May 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

i can't say i've head more than five of these, but i feel fairly confident voting for "all the small things" as it's the only one of those five that i can say i like

^defense is impregnable (will), Thursday, 21 May 2009 00:32 (sixteen years ago)

i never forgot every word of "all the small things"

oj da hoosman (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)

these are not all the singles, btw. and, while not a single, Going Away to College is at least as good as most of these.

You should stop, I have something important to communicate (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:14 (sixteen years ago)

I included all the singles that were officially released from every album (according to wikipedia). Did I miss something?

makeitpop, Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

wikipedia lists the following additional singles:
Lemmings
Dick Lips
Dumpweed (Live)
I Won't Be Home for Christmas

You should stop, I have something important to communicate (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't want to crowd up the poll with a live release or a holiday release. Not sure if the other two were actual singles- maybe for college radio? They didn't seem to get official videos or radio play...

makeitpop, Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure if the other two were actual singles

i don't know if they were "actual singles," but they were singles. four of the first five on your list didn't chart either.

You should stop, I have something important to communicate (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

some good material here:

taking sides green day vs. blink-182

I still stand by these statements:

"What's My Age Again" and "All The Small Things" are really really essential listening, probably the best rock songs on the radio that year.

"Rock Show," "Josie," and "Pathetic" are pretty darn good pop-punk... not much to say about them except that they're good and kinda sweet.

"Man Overboard" starts to go off in a little more of an arena direction but basically still works. "I Miss You" (the loopy spooky one) is kind of great if read as a halfway-ironic send up of the "we have to become dark and mature" move...I mean they have the guy with the whiny voice carrying on about spiders for god's sake, and the other guy is namechecking "Nightmare Before Christmas!"

"Dammit" kinda got on my nerves after a while tbh.

...and it's "All The Small Things" in a walk.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 21 May 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

would you have voted for one of those or are you just being a pedant

I Miss You.

But mad love to Adam's Song, my first-ever live cover (shout out to the other members of PICKS AND STICKS, my sixth grade cover band, fantastic backing guys, was an honor to sing for you).

Banvil! The Story of Banvil (Tape Store), Thursday, 21 May 2009 02:25 (sixteen years ago)

"I Miss You" 4eva.

Love "All The Small Things", "I Miss You" and "Down" - these seem like boring choices though. I should investigate Blink 182 more.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 May 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

voted "Dammit".

"Always" is underrated though, one of their best fake-80s moments.

Roz, Thursday, 21 May 2009 05:16 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: yeah, "going away to college" is probably their best non-single song.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 21 May 2009 05:23 (sixteen years ago)

gotta be dammit, but very few of their best songs were singles for some reason

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 21 May 2009 11:41 (sixteen years ago)

Suddenly wishing I voted for "Josie."

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:25 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure I loudly lamented it on the thread devoted to same, but Tom's ridiculous Cali accent (or whatever it is) makes the enjoyment of "I Miss You" entirely impossible for me.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

"Always" is underrated though, one of their best fake-80s moments.

totally! i was very disappointed when it wasn't a hit.

gotta say i don't really understand why "All The Small Theengs" is so loved, i thought maybe it was mainly popular for the video, but obviously a lot of people like the song too.

Shiny H. Peoplegarden (some dude), Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:43 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think you can blame Tom Delonge's bizarre relationship with enunciation on the state of California

Shiny H. Peoplegarden (some dude), Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

Too late. The blame has been assigned.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

What's My Age Again, because it's so sincere

Also, thanks to Dammit, every time someone says the word 'structure' a little voice inside my head goes 'did you hear, he fucked her'

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

gotta say i don't really understand why "All The Small Theengs" is so loved, i thought maybe it was mainly popular for the video, but obviously a lot of people like the song too.

Loved the song, was meh on the video (talent-show parody, bargain-bin Weird Al stuff). Really high energy and it rides this edge between a joke song (about this guy who stumbles home drunk all the time and doesn't realize his girl's cheating on him, wahh wahhhh) and a sincere, sweet song, which basically works if you're not paying attention. Incredibly fun to sing at karaoke.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:37 (sixteen years ago)

adam's song is the only one i recognise from there that i like

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

it never occurred to me that there was a cheating subtext to that song, but considering that you described the video as a "talent-show parody" i don't know whether to take your word for it

Shiny H. Peoplegarden (some dude), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

"All the Small Things" is a song by Blink-182, a single from their 1999 album Enema of the State. It is one of only two Blink-182 singles to reach the number 1 spot on the US Modern Rock chart. Tom DeLonge was inspired to write the song after his then-girlfriend (to whom he is now married) complained that he had written many songs about all the other girls he had known in his life, but none about her. The line in the song "she left me roses by the stairs/ surprises let me know she cares" references an actual incident where Tom came home late one night and had been left flowers by his girlfriend.

So, no.

Mark G, Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

i missed out on these guys, I think I was just moving out of my pop-punk phase when they started to get any sort of renown, a year or so earlier and I would have loved them.

Of these I've not heard a bunch, but apart from hating I Miss You and Stay Together For The Kids I like all the ones I've heard. Going with What's My Age again.

blink were great despite the inadequacies of their genre. (also despite their drummer and tom both being assholes.)

I probably would have voted "Dammit" but it still bums me out that "Always" didn't get any votes.

da croupier, Monday, 25 May 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

seriously! it lost out to "Down" when I decided to vote for one of the slept on later singles, but listening to them both today i enjoyed "Always" more.

some dude, Monday, 25 May 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

Forgot to vote, but would have voted Dammit, though.

Edward Saroyan, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 01:57 (sixteen years ago)

its just a really pretty song, i think , the vocals are so sweet. but the video is probably 'better' a couple of weeks ago some friends and i were watching all the blink videos & nostalgia tripping on who gr8 so many of them are

probably woulda voted 'what's my age again?'

the perfect simplicity and joy of the bass line in What's My Age Again

flappy bird, Sunday, 28 May 2017 01:33 (eight years ago)

"going away to college" never being a single is a goddamn travesty. the "don't depend on me to ever follow through on/anything but, i'd go through hell for you" is an all-timer.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Sunday, 28 May 2017 03:43 (eight years ago)

I don't know why I find All The Small Things so obnoxious, I think it might be Tom's bratty voice that gets on my nerves on that one. I like the rest of their singles, had no idea it would be a favorite in here.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Sunday, 28 May 2017 07:00 (eight years ago)

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Monday, 5 June 2017 18:55 (eight years ago)

It's actually quite impressive that this band spent most of their career making lame jokes, but the biggest laugh this band ever got from me was when Tom's voice entered on 'I Miss You' and steamrollered over the whole thing.
