On two listens I'm really really really liking this album, which I described on another thread as a blowsy, bluesy, Dylaneseque confessional album.
In fact it feels very much like Courtney trying to remake Tangled Up In Blue, crossed with West Coast driving music (the first song is even called "Pacific Coast Highway"). Its mournful guitars are filled in with sad-eyed piano and lugubrious organ, while Courtney's wracked, exhausted vocals try (halfway successfully) to pretend that the last ten years of hard living was all deliberately undertaken just to prepare for these songs. It's like the bruised, defeated flipside to the glittering perfection of "Malibu".
A really cynical person might compare it to Beck's Sea Change and suggest that this stylistic shift is similarly deliberate, but it's hard to think of another artist for whom such a shift seems more appropriate and more earned.

Wait, what's illegitimate about an artist making a stylistic change for any reason whatsoever? Do they owe us something?

is that supposed to be some Joni Mitchell Blue homage or waht

"Wait, what's illegitimate about an artist making a stylistic change for any reason whatsoever? Do they owe us something?"
No, not at all. I just meant that I'm anticipating a lot of reviews trying to attack Courtney on these grounds, as much because so many people try to attack her for whatever reason they can.
― Tim F, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)
so wait, what, is this actually coming out this decade?
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)
as much because so many people try to attack her for whatever reason they can
She's a pretty easy target. I'll check it out, though.

I heard some bootleg demos for this a while back, they were abysmal - hopefully the finished product is something less dire.
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)
I have to assume it's coming out this year.
Tracklist:
1. Pacific Coast Highway2. For Once In Your Life3. Letter To God4. Stand Up Motherfucker5. Loser Dust6. Dirty Girls7. Never Go Hungry Again8. Nobody's Daughter9. Happy Ending Story10. Car Crash11. Sunset Marquis (Piano Version)

love the cover photo - it's a perfect representation/distillation of who she actually is, as opposed to the airbrushed-onna-van wish-fullfilment of the America's Sweetheart cover
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
Did anybody know she was Paula Fox's grand-daughter? Weird.
― Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Friday, 22 May 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
tim, on the version you have, does she sound kinda out of it? the production on the version i found it a lot better than on the demos, but the vocals sound kinda haphazard, unsweetened. which is fine - i just want to be sure that i'm listening to the actual record
― Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, that's probably it!
― Tim F, Friday, 22 May 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)
well, in that case, i'm certainly not gonna encourage interested parties to google her name + the title + "mediafire" before the sucker's taken down or anything - that would be WRONG.

wow yeah, the whole record is good. i know this is cobbled together from bits and pieces over a few years, but it hangs together. need to listen more before i can say anything coherent about it, but ... seems kinda great on first go-round. i hope she manages to actually release it.

okay, so on first spin... this is one of those... whatchacallem... albums... like, an actual sequence of songs that hold together. retro as fuck.
Pacific Coast Highway - harrowing. first verse volta serves notice: shit will be realFor Once In Your Life - she's done the "i know you don't love me but I will be your world" thing before, but the context of utter loss driving it has never been more stark due to PCH setupLetter To God - dig it, not more to say yetStand Up Motherfucker - this is where tracks 1-3 end up, and it's as good as good as LA songs get imo + zings abound
Loser Dust: mehDirty Girls: meh
Never Go Hungry Again - omgwtf solo acoustic barnburning dylanesque anthem bitches!!!Nobody's Daughter - no idea, still coming down from Never Go Hungry...
Happy Ending Story - "Haaaay... I burn better in the dark..." <3Car Crash - j0hn darn1elle called... plz return "Up The Wolves" riff when yr done... but 'til then this is rockin' and dark as fuck whether real or fauxSunset Marquis - MUCH better than the early version I heard. apparently this whole "mixing" thing really matters.

Very top heavy album, I don't really understand why they chose to end it they way they did - or why they chose to omit Car Crash and Happy Ending Story, both were among the best among the original demos.
Letter to God is awful, so is Loser Dust.

Gwen Stefani had to share her husband-to-be with Courtney Love at the beginning of her relationship - because the Hole star was dating the Brit.
Love reveals she was so smitten with former Bush star Gavin Rossdale that she considered marrying him.
Love told radio host Howard Stern that Stefani knew all about her romance with Rossdale - and snagged him when her love rival ended the affair over criticism her boy toy was a clone of her late husband Kurt Cobain.
Love says, "I had this vision of marrying Gavin Rossdale one time. (We dated for) eight months... and we were like, 'Let's go spend our rock star money!' We had a really good time... He was lovely... We did like each other quite a bit.
"But the thing is that everyone gave me so much s**t because Gavin sounded like a lot like Kurt... but, man, he (Rossdale) was such an Adonis in his day."
And Love credits her one-time love rival, Stefani, with turning the rock star into a bedroom hunk.
She adds, "He got good in bed... something happened. Maybe Gwen taught him."
Love also told Stern in the candid radio chat that she once bedded a supermodel, but insisted the mystery lady wasn't Naomi Campbell, Janice Dickinson or Gisele Bundchen.
She reveals, "She's (model) notoriously pretty much gay, and that's because every girlfriend I have in London has had sex with her. And so, in the '90s... I was in an Italian city with her and she chased me around the room... She was the aggressor.
"I thought, 'You know what? If you're going to do it, do it with that one...'"
Asked to name names, Love would only say, "It wasn't Naomi Campbell... This is, like, a hot supermodel... Janice Dickinson had her day for like a month and she was the supermodel for that month... older than Gisele... but perennial."
