Courtney Love is Nobody's Daughter

On two listens I'm really really really liking this album, which I described on another thread as a blowsy, bluesy, Dylaneseque confessional album.

In fact it feels very much like Courtney trying to remake Tangled Up In Blue, crossed with West Coast driving music (the first song is even called "Pacific Coast Highway"). Its mournful guitars are filled in with sad-eyed piano and lugubrious organ, while Courtney's wracked, exhausted vocals try (halfway successfully) to pretend that the last ten years of hard living was all deliberately undertaken just to prepare for these songs. It's like the bruised, defeated flipside to the glittering perfection of "Malibu".

A really cynical person might compare it to Beck's Sea Change and suggest that this stylistic shift is similarly deliberate, but it's hard to think of another artist for whom such a shift seems more appropriate and more earned.

I heard some bootleg demos for this a while back, they were abysmal - hopefully the finished product is something less dire.

I have to assume it's coming out this year.

tim, on the version you have, does she sound kinda out of it? the production on the version i found it a lot better than on the demos, but the vocals sound kinda haphazard, unsweetened. which is fine - i just want to be sure that i'm listening to the actual record

well, lemme warn ya, pardner: it's sort of a slumpy, quiet, seated-on-a-stool w/o being folk album. lush. NOT like america's weetheart. it's the sort of thing that might be a grower.

It's not 11 versions of "Doll Parts" is it? If so, bleh.

plus wasn't impresssed with the 1998 album. man, i'm embarrassed to admit that i can't even remember what the title was and am too lazy to look it up. anyway, too much billy corgan influence on that one - and i'm a BC fan even. "malibu" was a keeper tho

I'm only a recent convert, or at least in the sense that I finally admitted that Live Through This is really good. But Celebrity Skin is garbage for the most part and I still haven't heard America's Sweetheart or Nobody's Daughter.

Interest in hearing this is there, but I'm in no rush.

wow yeah, the whole record is good. i know this is cobbled together from bits and pieces over a few years, but it hangs together. need to listen more before i can say anything coherent about it, but ... seems kinda great on first go-round. i hope she manages to actually release it.

okay, so on first spin... this is one of those... whatchacallem... albums... like, an actual sequence of songs that hold together. retro as fuck.

Pacific Coast Highway - harrowing. first verse volta serves notice: shit will be real
For Once In Your Life - she's done the "i know you don't love me but I will be your world" thing before, but the context of utter loss driving it has never been more stark due to PCH setup
Letter To God - dig it, not more to say yet
Stand Up Motherfucker - this is where tracks 1-3 end up, and it's as good as good as LA songs get imo + zings abound

Loser Dust: meh
Dirty Girls: meh

Never Go Hungry Again - omgwtf solo acoustic barnburning dylanesque anthem bitches!!!
Nobody's Daughter - no idea, still coming down from Never Go Hungry...

I'm gonna listen to it, but I don't understand from the individual tracks I've heard why she'd remove so much of the charm and feeling from the original demo leaks for this other thing that isn't half as good.

Very top heavy album, I don't really understand why they chose to end it they way they did - or why they chose to omit Car Crash and Happy Ending Story, both were among the best among the original demos.

Letter to God is awful, so is Loser Dust.

I've never heard of an artist writing a beautiful album and then rerecording it to turn in a far inferior album. This is just terrible. I hope the real album gets a release one day.

the released version of fiona apple's extraordinary version wasn't anywhere near as good as the jon brion demos, and i'm sure r&b fans will all be familiar with the fiasco that was ciara's fantasy ride (though only a few of the faults here were to do with re-recording as such) (well, apart from choosing the version of "work" with missy's TERRIBLE verse)

Still haven't heard the album, but just watched the Letterman interview. It was so sweet and honest, I was moved by it

Mixed reviews are fair, but I'm getting annoyed with all the "following 2004's admittedly terrible America's Sweetheart"... dammit, that was half a pretty good record you fuckers.

yeah america's sweetheart was a good album - "mono", "hold on to me", "life despite god" are all great songs and "but julian..." is just terrific, just this cascade of barbed zings all hitting home. fuck the strokes, seriously.

the absolute towering midsection of "hold on to me" is so amazing - "I AM THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE!" oh courtney, ilu.

Does she have any saving graces? Is their a side to her that you just have to live with 24-7 - in a band, in a house - to understand? Because she seems like the sort of person you'd straight up want to avoid.
