Why no thread on Mandrill?

There should be, can't believe I haven't started a thread on one of my favourite funk bands.
Anyone else a fan?

If you haven't heard any then you NEED this album especially.

Was just thinking about them the other day, fantastic band. Need to listen to more of their work.

well, it's called 'energize'

andrew m., Friday, 22 May 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

oh, and you may not believe it, but there's a mandrill on the cover!

Was recently listening to The Wild Magnolias' "They Call us Wild," and something about the sound of it made me want to pull out my old vinyl of "Mandrilland" for the first time in years. (The four songs that segue together to make up a suite on side one are awesome.)

Turns out they were both recorded in the same place, Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

I only have a double best-of, but there are about a metric shit-ton of recognizable samples on it.

Subtlest Fart Joke (Oilyrags), Friday, 22 May 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

What a cover!

calstars, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

I have the wild magnolia cd too but never made the connection.

re the samples, there was an acid house track that sampled some of the spoken word from a track on Is.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 22 May 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

They're like War with fewer hits.

I like war but mandrill were in a higher league IMO.
Mandrill do what Santana shouldve done instead of the crap he made after the 1st 2 albums.

According to wikipedia they still exist! And recorded an Obama tribute last year! That's kind of comforting to know.

three years pass...

The centerpiece of our music and our lives, eldest brother LOUIS WILSON, affectionately known as “Sweet Lou,” made his transition on Monday morning, January 7, 2013 in Southern California.

On behalf of the Wilson Family and Mandrill, we ask that you please light a candle, hum a song, play a drum or say a prayer in remembrance of him.

Lou would like that. . .

We will keep you posted on plans for a musical tribute in the near future and other information.

Best regards,
Ric, Carlos and Wolf

Those first two Mandrill albums are just perfection.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 13 February 2015 03:54 (ten years ago)

Wonder if they're on Spotify US?
