basically, you just want ilm to say "you're right"

iatee, Saturday, 23 May 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like coldplay has probably 'influenced' more musicians in total across the world

iatee, Saturday, 23 May 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

Who will go down as more influential: Coldplay or Daft Punk? Apples or Oranges?

I vote oranges

chocolatepiekid, Sunday, 24 May 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

How many groups actually sound like Daft Punk?! This is obviously Coldplay.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 24 May 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

coldplay are better and way less overrated than daft punk

uh, a lot of groups sound like daft punk

cutty, Sunday, 24 May 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

agreed! what daft punk did for dance music is massive compared to whatever the fuck it is coldplay contributed to pop rock.

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 24 May 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

you should be not making dum ilm polls and buy a round for your friends

Coldplay have won already.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 24 May 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

(Unless Travis -------> Coldplay, which may well be the case, in which case Travis --------> Keane and Travis --------> Athlete and Travis --------> Snow Patrol too)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

what time does Coldplay go on?

the dessert speaks (gabbneb), Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

United State Of Electronica sounds like Daft Punk.. ummm Stardust does too lol

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

Coldplay were Radiohead Light anyway until RH went all experimental/IDM so really the better q is Radiohead vs Daft Punk.

Siegbran, Sunday, 24 May 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure this is gonna give Disney an idea for a Tron 2 song.

Thanks a lot.

litcofsky, Sunday, 24 May 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

if Daft Punk beat Radiohead in a similar poll, something would be truly awry in the state of ILM

Local Gouda (country matters), Sunday, 24 May 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

not really

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 24 May 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

Radiohead may be a call, although I would consider them more influential on bands like Elbow and Muse. Coldplay are obviously very influenced by Travis though, plus there's a more obvious U2 element in their music than there has ever been in the music of Travis.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 25 May 2009 08:58 (sixteen years ago)

going to go with daft punk, because they are at least original, and originality has more weight in assessing true influence than "the number of acts sound just like you" as far as i'm concerned. an act nailing the daft punk sound is going to be a lot rarer than a bunch of goofballs cloning coldplay, yet daft punk have obviously inspired countless people to get involved in music.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 25 May 2009 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

But... Weren't Daft Punk mainly doing an early 80s soul weekender thing?

Geir Hongro, Monday, 25 May 2009 09:10 (sixteen years ago)

no

"I feel like coldplay has probably 'influenced' more musicians in total across the world"

the biggest new(ish) poppy rock band in indonesia is basically coldplay singing in indonesian, if that counts for anything. and there's no corresponding daft punk copycat band here that i can think of either

messiahwannabe, Monday, 25 May 2009 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

Critics and fans will claim Daft Punk as more influential, but clearly Coldplay's influence extends further, to more artists, to bigger artists, etc. It's just inevitable.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 25 May 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

it's not really clear how you're measuring that. one band selling more than another means they're more influential?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 25 May 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

more youtube vids of bad coldplay covers than dp

Roz, Monday, 25 May 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

Coldplay are more popular and widely heard, and they sell way more records, thus they have many more fans (strictly by numbers) and their influence extends further. Look at the majority of the shit that's appeared in NME over the past decade, and it's been Coldplay influenced.

why? what about, like, the velvet underground, who were heard by basically nobody while they were around. are they automatically less influential than the rolling stones? just because more people heard the rolling stones, it doesn't mean more were influenced to make music inspired by it.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 25 May 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

more influential presumably doesn't always mean 'more popular'. how many bands owe their sound or other aspects to Coldplay really? the influence of DP seems a lot clearer to define in many ways.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 25 May 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

yeah and besides how boring of a poll would "who's more popular: daft punk or coldplay" be?

samosa gibreel, Monday, 25 May 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

it's not really clear how you're measuring that. one band selling more than another means they're more influential?

Not in itself. But Coldplay have also spawned a lot of copycat bands. Well, along with Travis, that is.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 25 May 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

If Radiohead and Coldplay were to do a collaboration, would they call it Radioplay or Coldhead?

the next grozart, Monday, 25 May 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

they would call it "Chris Martin gagged and bound in the corner"

Local Gouda (country matters), Monday, 25 May 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

basically, this.

la belle dame sans serif (c sharp major), Monday, 25 May 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

fun fact: whenever someone uses the word 'clearly' they are full of shit

bnw, Monday, 25 May 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

clearly!

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 25 May 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

or at least: i think it's for sure that DP will go down as more influential, cos they're the kind of band people like to talk about as being influential. But in terms of actual ~influence~ I don't really think there's any way of knowing.

la belle dame sans serif (c sharp major), Monday, 25 May 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

Had to bump this because the results came in when the site was down. Vive le Daft Punk!

DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

Much as I prefer Daft Punk to Coldplay, this is a pretty clear example of pathetic ILM blue skies thinking.
