I can't believe we haven't done this before. If we have, please let me know. Thanking U. Curtis, if you don't have the vinyl of this, then I will send you the vinyl. Because every self-respecting music-a-holic who likes this record must have it on vinyl, just the way I did, fingerprints on the black Geffen inner labels and all.

The reason I got reminded of this album all of a sudden was I was at work this week and heard the instrumental "I'll Remember" in my head. I couldn't even remember the title of the song, but I knew it was the last song on this record. The other tracks were on the bonus record.

This is the first Chameleons ('UK') album I ever heard and it has the broadest, warmest place in my heart. So hypnotic and emotive, so so good.

Went with 'Soul in Isolation' but IIRC one of them has some epic guitar break and that is the business. The covers on this album are awful, tho.

Also, damn, didn't these guys have the best album covers ever?

Designed by their guitarist Reg Smithies.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 May 2009 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Where the fuck is "Swamp Thing"?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 May 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

Haha a minor omission, yes. Then again it would probably win in a runaway so this might actually be a better poll.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 May 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Ah Swamp Thing is the one I was thinking of! BUT I wld still have kept my vote the same.

LOL @ no Swamp Thing. Well, it doesn't get my vote anyway. I've always been partial to the underrated second half of the album, especially "Time". The last chorus of that song is stunning - those awesome backup vocals!

Ditto.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 29 May 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Great album, but no higher than third on my Chameleons list, with Script and Basically taking turns at #1.

I missed this poll, would have voted "Caution."

Bad Gaygay (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 1 June 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

Curtis, that would've made two of us.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

don't remember if i voted, but it probably would've been for "caution"!

I've always been partial to the underrated second half of the album, especially "Time". The last chorus of that song is stunning - those awesome backup vocals!

^^ I feel this way about "Childhood."

two weeks pass...

My friend said he had not heard Chameleons and wanted to hear them because someone mentioned them to him. So I decided to play him "Swamp Thing" and he didn't like it and fired up his own iPod instead. The nerve?!

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Monday, 22 June 2009 07:58 (sixteen years ago)

never saw this poll but the absence of swamp thing is the most WTF thing ever

cutty, Monday, 22 June 2009 12:56 (sixteen years ago)

So I decided to play him "Swamp Thing"

Should have started with something less epic/extended. Maybe "Second Skin" or "Escalator" or something else from the first album.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 22 June 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

six years pass...

This is such a damn fine album.

Austin, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 03:29 (ten years ago)

My single favorite album ever. It helps that I was a teenager when it came out but it still has this incredible emotional punch from the lyrics coupled with a unique guitar swirl and a very talented drummer.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 03:56 (ten years ago)

The sequencing is what really gets me. Just so damn consistent.

Austin, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 17:24 (ten years ago)

seven years pass...

Some of the guitars on Tears make me wish, heretically, for hyperreal 90s production to make them pop.

default damager (lukas), Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:14 (two years ago)

Not a bad vision!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:15 (two years ago)

Mark is touring this album in full this year.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:54 (two years ago)

Soul in Isolation! I’m alive in here, dammit.

brimstead, Thursday, 4 April 2024 20:16 (two years ago)

xp i wonder if they will do the beatbox drums on "Seriocity"

c u (crüt), Thursday, 4 April 2024 20:40 (two years ago)

I haven’t been to any of his/their shows in probably 20 years or so but had to get a ticket when I saw they’d be playing this one in full. 3-LP 45rpm reissue coming next month too:

The great Wilfully Obscure blog posted the album demos a while back; still available for the curious.
