you know what i mean, tracks that gay men in detroit and chicago in 1983 were dancing to. eurythmics b-sides, obscure japanese cosmic synth shit, electro-pop, dub mixes and bonus beats here. even if you're not 100% sure that gay men in 80s chicago danced to it but it suits the vibe anyway, post here!
just recently discovered this:

Never heard that Severed Heads track before - I really need to check them out some more. Can't believe how much KZA's Open Up bites that. It's more or less identical...

It's all just disco but it doesn't all sound the same to me. Discuss and/or define a cannon so it doesn't slip through the cracks and record stores can add a new label to push product. See the end of this thread for starters:
Taking Sides: Patrick Cowley vs Arthur Russell

whoops. I didn't mean to revive both of these threads!
― dan selzer, Saturday, 18 July 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
so flock of seagulls and chris and cosey and kajagoogoo etc etc are disco now? or just balearic?
― michael jatas (r1o natsume), Saturday, 18 July 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago)
discussion above was about the eclectic different stuff that chicago djs and others would play in the early house sets. That doesn't necessarily make it "disco" or "balearic".
I guess if you look at disco as initially being the eclectic stuff played at the Loft, then later music was written as disco when it became more of a sound, the same can be said for house. Initially house is whatever was played at the Music Box or Power Plant, but then became the sound of the artists who came out of that.
― dan selzer, Saturday, 18 July 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
Bingo.
This thread is exactly why I'm not terribly interested in building a genre out of the records that influenced early house. It will become about a vague and ridiculous as balearic.

And here's Part 2 of the same "Paco's supermix" - put together by the Latin Rascals in spring 1984, and aired every Saturday night on the Barry Graves "Studio 89" show in West Berlin. So pleased that these have started surfacing on YouTube, as I've been meaning to digitise my cassette copies for years. (You can keep your Double Dee & Steinski - this was the stuff that really blew me away.)

i like that a lot. hear a bit of scott grooves in the vibe of it.
side note: it's great that we've largely learned to name tunes/artists in these youtube threads these days. i know at least a few of the above posters are still around. maybe they could drop a few names below, if they remember them at all!
