Overproduced Noise

Give me some examples. I'm thinking like late-80s super-chimey guitar overproduced. (I thought of this last night while listening to Daydream Nation, and said, hmm, I wonder if there are albums that sound like this only produced by uh Terry Brown ca. Signals?)

I don't think Loveless will be the kind of thing I'm thinking of, but if you think so then please tell me why.

Another answer occurred to me: Shellac, say, is not what I'm looking for because they're not 'overproduced' in the typical giant-commercial-monster-album sense. Not good production - overproduction.

haha, unless you think even albini production goes too far for noise

I'm sort of interested in seeing if anyone thinks it stops being noise once this happens. Maybe it's some kind of technical impossibility?

Bob Mould: Black Sheets of Rain. This could have been a glorious squall of noise, but the production squeezed the life out of it.

(Must refrain from quoting Attali.)

That Pat Metheny album is a perfect example of this.

you mean 'song x' or 'zero tolerance for silence'?

Josh, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zero tolerance; I actually like Song X quite a bit.

Kris, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so it ruins things then?

Well, Voivod's Angel Rat actually was produced by Terry Brown. Dunno if it counts as noise but if you're looking for chimey postpunk guitars and are willing to consider SY and MBV, it might be what you're looking for.

What about NIN-style industrial? Even a lot of academically-funded electroacoustic music kinda has a glossy production quality, which used to bother me back when I had scruples about these things.
