hard

AMYL NATHRAKH (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 May 2009 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Coil.

I feel like they have stronger records than the other two.

t0dd swiss, Thursday, 28 May 2009 04:55 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for coil because t0dd just said what I think as well.

StanM, Thursday, 28 May 2009 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Coil because I like them the most, and also the thing t0dd and StanM said about having stronger records.

Coil >>> Nurse with Wound >>>>>> Current 93

Nurse vs. Coil = impossible, abstaining.

sleeve, Thursday, 28 May 2009 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for NWW but new Current 93 album is outstanding.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 28 May 2009 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

yes, it really is

I think David Keenan is right, that whole chapter of what he calls England's Hidden Reverse really came to an end with the death of
John Balance and the emergence of Steven Stapleton as a public figure. Plus, both C93 and NWW started putting out an avalanche of
live albums and remixes at one point which kind of devalued the whole project for me. I love them all but of the three, I voted for C93
as being the band I listen to most frequently. Could write a ton more but work calls...

anagram, Thursday, 28 May 2009 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

Current 93 by a hair over Coil, because although Coil probably do have stronger albums, C93 have higher highs imo.

myndbloom, Thursday, 28 May 2009 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

For what's worth, all three bands are totally essential for me.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 28 May 2009 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

NWW by some distance. Never really liked anything I've ever heard from the other two - not liked it enough anyway.

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

Current 93 album is outstanding.

Yes, it really is.

This is between Coil and Current 93 for me... not for lack of NWW love, but I haven't immersed myself in their catalog as fully to this point. Leaning to Current right now but I'll wait a few days to think it over, then vote.

I pulled out Love's Secret Domain last night as well. Some of it sounds a bit dated, other parts totally fantastic and enveloping and unfuckwithable.

"Aleph" is everything I wanted the new Current 93 to be.
But I still have this soft spot for NWW - best sleep music ever, despite what my wife's protests.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Coil without a doubt.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

Agree. Not really even close.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

love love love nww. fall in and out of love with c93 but i have the most love for coil.

stirmonster, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

this is difficult. i know the op says "commonly associated acts" but really they're way too different to pick who's best. the great thing about these groups is you know they're still capable of releasing their best work. the nurse album from last year is among their best imo. obv this doesn't apply to coil anymore, but you get the feeling they were just getting better and better before the end, especially with regards to live shows (i NEED to hear sleazy's new album with CoH).

for me it's between nurse and coil. both groups have made some of the most vital music of the last 20 years, but coil win simply because of johnn balance.

a somnambulist in an ambulance (r1o natsume), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

also, coil had the best side projects ever. the black light district album is so sick

a somnambulist in an ambulance (r1o natsume), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

actually i only got into these bands about three years ago so shouldn't vote at all

a somnambulist in an ambulance (r1o natsume), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

I think the order they're listed in the poll looks right.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

haha after reflection i feel like they are in exact reverse order for me

AMYL NATHRAKH (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

nww > coil >>>>>>> c93.

ian, Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Coil is defs the most listenable. I think C93 is getting sold way short in this thread! NWW is its own dimension, IMO – I know there's a lot of collab/project inbreeding between all the guys but NWW's as equal to Coil as they are to Stereolab IMO.

cant go with u too many alfbrees (Abbott), Thursday, 28 May 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

David Tibet is my favorite personality from each of these groups, tho I bet it's more fun to BE Steve Stapleton.

cant go with u too many alfbrees (Abbott), Thursday, 28 May 2009 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

My vote was entirely based on answering the question "if someone told you to grab a CD by one of these artists, which one would you pick first?" because they are all great.

Ergo, Coil.

my number one artist on last.fm is NWW (which to be fair did involve an extended binge-on-all-the-albums period)

AMYL NATHRAKH (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 May 2009 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

I was like 'damn that is impressive given their albums have 2 songs' but then I remembered 'A Sucked Orange' (awesome album) and was like, 'nevermind.'

cant go with u too many alfbrees (Abbott), Thursday, 28 May 2009 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

I had a close encounter with David Tibet just a few weeks back. Him and his missus and me and literally just two or three other guys sat watching Clive Palmer play as part of a local vegan fair (guessing he was just there for the music). Kinda wish I'd said hello, not sure he's a small talk sort of fellow though.

Anyhow, have listened to C93 way more than the others, so uh, them.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 28 May 2009 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

Really hard to pick one. Each of these artists have put out some of my favorite records of all time:

Coil: "Time Machines", "Musick To Play In The Dark Vols 1 & 2"
Current 93: "Sleep Has His House", "All The Pretty Little Horses"
NWW: "Soliloquy For Lilith", "Salt Marie Celeste"

I think if I were to pick the albums that I want to hear the most, it would be a toss-up between "Sleep Has His House" and "Musick To Play In The Dark".

Dan S, Thursday, 28 May 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

nww > coil >>>>>>> c93.

voted and agreeing with dis. ten years ago it probably would've gone the other way, though.

i'm too hardcore to be bourgeois (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 29 May 2009 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

Results about what I expected. I'm glad they each got a significant number of votes.

Dan S, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

eleven years pass...

does musical pumpkin cottage count as a NWW or C93 album (and/or is this binary question missing the point altogether?)?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 4 December 2020 20:39 (five years ago)

technically it is credited to Stapleton/Tibet, like The Sadness Of Things

those records are really their own kinda thing IMO, I love them
