maybe there's an obvious answer to this that i haven't considered--all i want is a comprehensive weekly list of new releases (major, indie, i'll take as much as i can get), preferably with an archive. i don't dl leaks so i need such a resource to plan my record buying.

^^^ this
the problem with most 'comprehensive' lists on sites like Billboard is that it's usually hundreds of entries long and full of redundant special editions and tons and tons of reissues, but i've yet to find a good tidy dependable new release list (front page of iTunes is helpful but not very comprehensive). in more ambitious moments i've thought about doing some kinda 'rolling Tuesday new releases' thread and boiling down to a list of maybe the 50 or 100 most significant releases of the week, but there's no way i'd have the time to put that together every week.

there must be subscribers to Music Week who scan/type their weekly list of releases in the UK onto a forum somewhere. that would be nice.

yeah this allmusic list (which i never noticed cause allmusic's site is so bad) is kind of the right idea but it's also got like 600 entries. i mean, it's great that universal japan reissued a bunch of astrud gilberto records but that's not exactly useful info to me sitting here in MA.

uh, people... djmartian!!!

of ilx fame
You can sort by genre and shit, tho. It's usable if you toy with it.
djmartian's list is 80% bonkers jazz and scary metal.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)
even just a list of all new major label releases would be good, and not hard to add 'big' indie releases to...you'd think companies like Interscope would make it easy to see what they're releasing every week on their websites, but they never do.

The blog called "Largehearted Boy" does a pretty good weekly roundup of 'Interesting New Releases'.

Yeah, it's a good blog. I need to read it more regularly. The 'Shorties' Posts is a good roundup of links to recent music-related stories.

In the UK there is http://www.searchmuze.co.uk/ which is aimed at retailers and the like; very comprehensive indeed. It's a hefty subscription fee though (several hundred pounds a year) as its not really meant for private individuals.

http://www.metacritic.com/music/upcomingreleases.shtml
The above link from Metacritic.com does a good job providing the more mainstream/indie acts on a weekly basis. They keep their upcoming release calendar up-to-date.
― musicfanatic, Thursday, 28 May 2009 19:58 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah but metacritic also seems to just completely blank out on relatively big releases from time to time, its weird.

not to mention metacritic turns a blind eye to all but the biggest releases in a lot of genres like rap, country, etc.
