'wrong way up' vs. 'songs for drella'

allmusic gives em both 4 1/2 stars, which seems like the right score to me. I love em both, but they're not perfect.

so, same time period, cale seems like the co-pilot in both of these. and both ended w/ bitterness and 'neva again!'s

'spinning away' is the best song on either album, 'songs for drella' has more heart.

'wrong way up' gets bonus points for the setting a record for 'largest margin between album art quality and album quality'

How come no one's thought of this poll idea before?!

I've owned WWU far longer (I still only own it on tape) and adore it -- the best work either's done since the late seventies. Cale's role is more pronounced on SFD, and he gets the most heartbreaking moment ("A Dream"), whereas he feels like either expensive help or George Harrison on WWU.

his role is pronounced in SFD, but it seems like there was more musical collaboration in WWU, whereas SFD was more of a late-period mccartney/lennon relationship?

Wrong Way Up by a million miles.

too bad there's no an eno/reed album from 1990 to round things out

I have Wrong Way Up on cassette too.

more thoughts:

even though I said SFD has more heart - which is does, but I mean, an album about your dead friend is gonna have more heart than pretty much anything - WWU is still among Eno's more heartfelt works, innit?

it's also a question of minimalism vs. maximalism - and in both cases the albums might go a little overboard - SFD might be a little too sparse sometimes and WWU's thick layer of eno production is def not for everyone's ears.

For some reason I just couldn't really get into Wrong Way Up when I played it some months back. Maybe I'm just overly familiar with when someone kept playing it at a place I worked many years ago. Drella absolutely stunned me this year, though. I remember when it came out, but never would have thought it'd be interesting to me. BTW last night I dreamt that someone did a poll for Music For A New Society...;)

"One Word" is this beautifully painted cuckoo clock of a song.
