(UNPOLLED) - Post-Sweetheart Era Byrds studio albums

The Clarence White years. Uneven records, questionable Skip Battin/Kim Fowley songwriting, lots of facial hair, modest sales. Then the disappointing reunion (which is a totally different creature and perhaps doesn't even belong on the same poll). I think there are some great songs and underrated records, even the reunion is half good. What's best?

I love Ballad of Easy Rider a ton; "Tulsa County" is great, the title track, even the sweet cover of "Deportee".

Untitled, if not for 'Lover of the Bayou' and 'Chestnut Mare' alone ...

One of my favorite Byrds records, period. The Clarence White-sung songs ("My Destiny," "Jamaica Say You Will") are awesome. "I Trust" is killer gospel and one of their best. I enjoy the Skip Battin/Kim Fowley tunes as well.

And fuck everyone who calls this record "Melcher's Folly" -- whether it's the piano on "My Destiny," the strings on "Pale Blue" or the background vocals on "I Trust," Byrdmaniax has an awesome production jobs.

controversial

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Saturday, 30 May 2009 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

i feel you a bit on that, never heard the whole record but jamaica and pale blue are pretty

on a similar note, i will rep for dr. byrds as being unfairly maligned, esp. the heavy, acidy tunes

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Saturday, 30 May 2009 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

never heard that reunion LP -- is it as bad as they say?

tylerw, Saturday, 30 May 2009 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

the gene clark tunes and neil young covers on it are great

I've never heard the reunion album either, can't believe it could be worse than "Farther Along". There are lots of good tracks on these albums but far too many bad ones as well. Voting "Untitled", the Skip Battin track on that isn't as hideous as his usual ones.

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, that "see the sky" ain't bad. is that record even on CD? I remember seeing it used on vinyl all the time when I was a kid. Strange -- did that album just get totally panned when it came out? It's pretty much written out of the Byrds' history. Or at least there's nothing from it on the box set.

Or at least there's nothing from it on the box set.

The Gene Clark songs Full Circle and Changing heart are on the 'There Is A Season' box.

I don't dislike any of the albums in the poll - I guess Untitled gets the vote for having some epic live stuff on it. I agree with the love for Byrdmaniax upthread, and I also have a soft spot for Farther Along.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

ah, i only have that older box set ... but yeah, i agree, none of the Clarence White albums are bad, really -- I think they're just as good as any of the country rock stuff from the same era, for the most part. Not perfect albums by any means, but pretty good.

tylerw, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty good is about as far as it goes, it's not much really

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

That's weird—ILX is eating my comments again.

I was just mentioning that the final album is more a David Crosby joint than anything else, and that it was a pretty decent buy for $6, but not anything to get excited about one way or another. The untitled album was pretty solid, and well worth the $8.

yeah, complaints were that crosby, who produced it, greatly diminished mcguinn's role and made the thing seem like a CSNY ripoff. some merit to that but in hindsight the record has some decent tunes and clark shines. weird to have a byrds record with only 2 mcguinn lead vocals. as many have noted, best reunion songs were actually one in a hundred/she's the kind of girl that appeared on roadmaster and featured the original lineup. also, i think "my new woman" from mcguinn's first solo joint also had the full byrds on it and is quite good.

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

I fuckin love anything with Gene Clark's hand in it. I can't pick one.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

i think you might be able to pick one from that list though -- Gene Clark's only on the original lineup reunion LP, right? Or does he show up on co-writes on a few of these?

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

maybe he means Gene Parsons ? speaking of which, anybody ever heard the Gene Parsons or Skip Battin solo lps? I've been curious ... I always found it strange that those guys got to do solo albums, when the Byrds themselves couldn't have been moving too many units during that period

I'd have to pick 'Ballad' from this lot, the title track is beautiful, I love the country stuff like "Oil in My Lamp", Mcguinn was born to sing "Deportee", and "Fido" freakin rocks ... has nobody sampled the percussion breakdown? they beat the James Gang to the punch by a year ..

Plunge Protection Team, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

"Ballad Of Easy Rider".

surprised dr byrds got more than my vote

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Thursday, 4 June 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

listening to a rollicking bootleg from 1971 at the Ash Grove -- man, they were soooo much better live at this point. Clarence White + almost funky rhythm section = SWEET.

tylerw, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

i love dr. byrds, and voted for it!
