The Bags: C|D

I can't believe these guys don't have a thread for them yet. (And if they do, I couldn't find it searching bags -- lots of great stuff about Messenger bags and Jazz Bags tho!) So, raucous Alice Armandariz, LA punk in 1977. I say total classic after seeing some recordings of live shows and listening to All Bagged Up: The Collected Work 1977-1980.

the four existing studio tracks are some of the best that LA 70's punk has to offer, live stuff from The Masque benefit is also great. total classic.

i.e I mean "Survive"/"Babylonian Gorgon" 45, "We Will Bury You", and "We Don't Need The English", not the posthumous "Disco's Dead" 45.

"Babylonian Gorgon" is tremendous.

Genuinely disappointed this thread isn't about the Boston band. Who not only were classic, but are still/again performing and recording!

Did anyone see this recent Experience Music Project Pop Conference presentation about Alice Bag (of the Los Angeles Bags) that was blogged about here:

http://www.shaviro.com/Blog/?p=740

The first, “Dance Floor Democracy,” featured my old friend Michelle Habell-Pallan, talking about Chicana punk singer Alice Bag, from the early-80s Los Angeles scene, and about the influence of “ranchera” music (the Mexican mariachi sound she listened to as a child) on her performances — a whole hidden history of women’s emotional expression and how this complicates the history of punk.

Alice Bag was blogging up a storm a couple months ago, talking about the early days of the Bags. She's since pulled it down and hopes to republish it as a book.

Kinda like some of the more musical efforts from the 2016 album better than some Bags cuts. <ducks>

two months pass...

I won tickets to see Alice Bag in Philly this evening so despite the very late weekday time (the internet said 10:45, the venue had a sign saying 11:15 and it was actually a little after that when they hit the stage) I attended and I was glad I did. She was full of righteous fury even as she is past 50 and the crowd was a delightful mix of old punks and young feminists. She apparently spent a couple decades as a teacher and from the stage she uses her experience as a punk rock veteran and educator connecting with everyone in the very diverse crowd.

Alice was nice enough to sign a copy of her book and CD that came out last year on Don Giovanni Records. We spoke briefly about her labelmates Screaming Females, Decline.

I am super glad I went to the show, she was inspiring.
