Brian Wilson's first album credit as producer. A really strong album in general, the weaker moments probably being the instrumentals (altho Boogie Woodie ain't so bad)

South Bay Surfer.

Other candidates: Surfer Moon, with its Moon/June lyrics and generic string section backing; Surfers Rule, for trying too hard to continue the theme.

you know, when I was a kid (like four or five) I thought 'In My Room' was the scariest song I'd ever heard. There was something really disturbing and weird about the vocals/melody ....

"Surfers Rule" is very stupid indeed. A boring rock'n'roll song about some kind of conflict between Beach Boys and Four Seasons. Quite pointless.

"Surfer Moon" is brilliant. Those harmonic ballads were always the best on early Beach Boys albums!

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

I kinda gotta agree with Geir there, the early ballads are almost all uniformly great and usually among my favorites from the early records.

I like the rockin hits too tho, Catch A Wave, for ex. is awesome

Kool G Lapp (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Catch A Wave is brilliant.

"Catch a Wave" is among the better fast ones IMO, as are of course also more famous ones like "I Get Around". But I still prefer the slower ones. Later Brian would also make brilliant fast songs, such as "Good Vibrations", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Here Today".

as we're nearing the end of these polls, I just noticed I do not actually have the first two albums, and don't think I've ever even heard them in their entirety. I know the hits but that's about it...

insane that Carl was 17 when this was cut

X-Post. They are hardly essential, but buying the "Keeping The Summer Alive" twoofer before them is still verging on shrink material :)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

You've never heard Chug-A-Lug?!

meisenfek, Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

South Bay Surfer is indeed not very good, but I cannot vote against it, due to my deep South Bay roots.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

this is my favourite of the early albums. I've gone for Our Car Club, cos I'm not that hot on their car songs.

OK, this has long been one of those mystery lyrics for me:

"We got a Deuce Coupe, a Stingray, a ____________ and a XK-E"

So I just googled the lyrics to find out what it is. Answer: it's a "rail job".

Now I've been a gearhead all my life and I have no idea wtf a "rail job" is. Anyone?

Lee626, Saturday, 26 December 2015 07:05 (ten years ago)

Rail job
dragster with exposed front frame.
