although the others do have their moments. nash's "Better Days" has been bonertime lately for me.

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 4 June 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

but seriously, If I Could Only Remember My Name is one of my fave albums, like ever

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 4 June 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Nash cuz of the Hollies

Kool G Lapp (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going with Still because of Buffalo Springfield. Also, I don't think he had anything to do with "Our House," which makes me want to destroy the earth.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

well, he played and sang on it -- and produced it. but he didn't write it ... I'm gonna go with Crosby, for his Byrds stuff and If I Could Only Remember ...

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

I've been meaning for months to make an "Our House" vs. "Teach Your Children" poll and when I do I'll be sure to send you a reminder. xp

Crosby vs Nash is a tough one; I was surprised when I got the first Crosby/Nash album at how much I prefer Nash's songs to Crosby's. Frozen Smiles!

scott seaward (G00blar), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah IICORMN pwns Songs For Beginners

scott seaward (G00blar), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

we could also poll which one of these douchebags is the biggest douchebag. guess that'd be between crosby and stills really -- Nash seems to be the nice guy of the group.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

tempted to vote Still for 9 minute "Bluebird" + Manassas alone

Plunge Protection Team, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

in fact, fuck it I am voting Stills. lotsa nice stuff on "2" too

Plunge Protection Team, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

Crosby easily the biggest douchebag for a) manipulatively expelling Gene Clark from the Byrds and b) giving us the unpleasant image of a walrus impregnating Melissa Etheridge

Kool G Lapp (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

Gene Clark probably didn't need much help to leave the Byrds, tbf.

scott seaward (G00blar), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

For my fav, Crosby by a pretty decent distance over Nash (yeah, the Byrds and the first solo record, holy cow), then both a long distance over Stills. But Crosby + Nash, good grief check this out, I've prob. posted it before but it's so great:

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

my fave Crosby quote is his opinion on Crazy Horse: "I'd say to Neil 'What the f--- are you doing playing with those jerks?' He'd say 'They're soulful.' I'd say `Man, so is my dog, but I don't give him a set of drums!'"

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

"Our House" vs. "Teach Your Children"

Who here (or anywhere) would vote for "Our House"?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

Crosby calling anyone else a jerk is pretty rich

Kool G Lapp (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

lol, yeah -- and having heard a few CSNY boots, gotta say that Crazy Horse walks all over them, even in terms of musicianship. Dudes had some tuning issues.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

interesting fact i learned while looking up that quote
Q Who paid for Crosby's liver?
A None other than Phil Collins: "... I gave him the money to pay for his liver and keep the IRS at bay. I just wanted to give him something back for what he'd given me: all the music. Love him dearly".

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

lol, another interesting fact
Q What was Jimi Hendrix' last guitar solo that was recorded?
A Originally Jimi Hendrix recorded a guitar solo for Stills' Love the One You're With. The ones who heard it were buzzing about it as something incredible. Apparently it sat for a while and Stills recorded over it with the steel drums. It was Jimi's LAST guitar solo...
He died soon after.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

I just don't get the Crosby love. I've never listened to IICORMN tho

Kool G Lapp (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

that's pretty much where the love comes from

tylerw, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently it sat for a while and Stills recorded over it with the steel drums.

This makes it sound like Stills 'recorded over it' by rolling steel drums over the actual tape.

scott seaward (G00blar), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

would make for one of the great sitcom scenes

gangsta hug (omar little), Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

we could also poll which one of these douchebags is the biggest douchebag

Crosby takes it in a walk.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed. He is the epitome of the '60s self-aggrandizing hippie who thinks their generation "changed the world".

Bill Magill, Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

that attitude has no place in this thread^^

scott seaward (G00blar), Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

Voting Nash because the others didn't sound as good without his voice in the mix.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

i guarantee crosby is no more a douchebag than 99% of famous musicians out there

gangsta hug (omar little), Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really see, why can't we pick all three

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

Stills: "Go Back"(Wonderful track)
"Bluebird"
"Suite:Judy Blue Eyes"
Pretty Girl Why(really great song with nice tremolo guitar)
did he also write "for what it's worth"?

Voted Stills b/c of his guitar playing.

Mark, Friday, 5 June 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

Stills. Love the One You're With is godawful, but the Manassas record is really really good.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 5 June 2009 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, manassas is dope but i feel hillman contributed a lot to that. if this is about who contributed the most to the csn records i think you have to go stills tbh. but if we're talking the whole career of each then crosby, for ladyfriend if nothing else

L. Ron Huppert (velko), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

tempted to vote Still for 9 minute "Bluebird" "For What It's Worth" + Manassas alone

I wish he hadn't adapted my critique of his "ilxor" moniker (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 5 June 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

Hollies were awes and Nash's voice nothing to sneeze at, not to mention writing "pre road downs," which = top tier CSN for me.

as for Cros, much <3 for the Byrds but i doubt my opinion of them would be diminished much even if he'd never been part of the equation

& I'm sure Stills is an unbearable prick (based on Shakey et al), i love Buffalo Springfield and am quite fond of that Manassass record. gotta go Stills.

^defense is impregnable (will), Friday, 5 June 2009 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'm kinda shocked by the Stills love here! Although if it's TS: "Uno Mundo" vs. "Mind Gardens" then I go with old Cocaine Eyes.

I would! I think that's the only CSN song I ever get the urge to listen to.

A guy I know in his 50s told me the other day, with absolute conviction, that Neil Young was the third most talented member of CSNY. (Stills was top, followed by Crosby) It was one of the wrongest opinions I've ever heard.

My favourite Stills story is that he took so much cocaine that he went around telling people he'd served in Vietnam and sort of believing it.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:13 (fifteen years ago)

danggg how did i miss this polll

i think crosby is the right answer if we're talking about strength of solo projects alone, but that's not necessarily fair given that iicormn also includes tonnnns of contributions from cali hippie all stars like most of the grateful dead, grace slick, joni mitchell, the rest of csn&y, michael shrieve, etc. it's more of a happy communal vibe that's going on, and most of the time the album's success really doesn't have too incredibly much to do with crosby himself.

which i suppose could also be said about manassas, but when it comes down to it only one of these guys wrote and sang lead on "dark star"

six years pass...

Been doing a deep dive on Joni Mitchell for the first time in my life and really enjoying her music in a way I hadn't entirely been able to grasp before. Knowing that she was friends with C,S,N, and Y, and learning now that some of her songs were written about them, I decided to sample Deja Vu on Spotify (it's missing Neil and Joni's songs because they pulled their Spotify catalogs over Rogan beef).

Of the first three songs, I was pretty impressed by Stills' Carry On. Nash's Teach Your Children has always seemed extremely corny to me and this re-listen did nothing to change my estimation. Almost Cut My Hair by David Crosby is just an awful dirge.

So it's amusing to me that the results here are pretty much the opposite of my limited sampling.

It looks like I'll be moving on to their solo work, in which case If I Could Only Remember My Name and Songs for Beginners seem like the obvious picks for Crosby and Nash. But what of the embattled Stills? His self-titled solo record? Manassas? Stills-Young Band's Long May You Run?

peace, man, Friday, 7 October 2022 11:46 (two years ago)

I was listening to the CSN projects in chronological order, but bailed out after 1972. Stills gets criticized for egomania, but he was also more ambitious than C or N, and actually rocked once in a while.

His self-titled solo record? This and Stills 2 have a few good songs, like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxbw1SGBu8M

Manassas? Probably his best album but still about half filler; having Chris Hillman singing and writing helps him out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt9qbiwslqo

Stills-Young Band's Long May You Run? Even the Neil songs on this are pretty weak.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 9 October 2022 01:54 (two years ago)

Long May You Run is a mediocre album with, I believe, one of Neil's greatest songs: "Ocean Girl" (which is 1972's "War Song" with new words).

clemenza, Sunday, 9 October 2022 02:39 (two years ago)

Stills has maybe the best sideman/session credits of the lot: his half of Super Session; Joni's Blue; Bill Withers' Just As I Am; cameos on Humble Lie's Smokin'; and percussion on "You Should Be Dancing".

Probably yes, I'd say.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 9 October 2022 14:57 (two years ago)

That Public Enemy are sitting on separate easy chairs while CSN all sat on the same couch is a trenchant comment on the atomization of the great social movements of the 60s by the 90s.

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now
Haven't got sick once
Probably keep us both alive

I was thinking about this line from "Wooden Ships" last night; how it represents the strength the counterculture derived from the continuum of rock music history up to that point (from Chuck Berry to Deep Purple.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 14 January 2024 17:08 (one year ago)

That’s interesting… I’m not sure I buy that was the intention, but I’ve never thought about the possibility that the song could be a metaphor for a slice of the counterculture “dropping out”

Why would they use a euphemism for iodine pills(?) I just take the narrative as face value, it’s obviously a kind of fantasy scenario

Wooly Bully (2005 Remaster) (morrisp), Sunday, 14 January 2024 19:02 (one year ago)

or maybe lsd? it's a whole controversy, apparently.

Purple berries: fruit, iodine pills or LSD?
In the article the 'purple berries' are explained to be iodine pills. Though that makes sense within the context of a post nuclear apocalypse story, I have not found any other article on the internet that corroborates this meaning. At this talk page someone suggests it may be the berries that grow on a tree in Vietnam. However, in most articles I've read about the song, the 'purple berries' are a reference to the purple, lentil-shaped LSD tablets that were popular in the time and were sold under exactly that name. I have the feeling that in the article the explanation that is the least likely to be the right one is the only one given. I don't have the means to research this thoroughly but I wish there's someone here who will look into that. Because I don't think the article is correct on this issue. Were Deep Purple that big deal when that song was written?

The original "Mark I" lineup was pretty popular in the States, breaking early on FM Radio and quickly crossing over to AM Top 40 with "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman" later on, although I'm don't think they'd necessarily been seen as Rock'n'Roll future yet.
