"it's just begun" is a classic jam beloved by b-boys and disco dudes alike but this song is tied as my favorite by JC

FUN FACT:

"Castor then replaced Frankie Lymon in The Teenagers in 1957 before switching to the saxophone in 1960."

A lot of weird records on the radio when I was 10, but "Troglodyte" was maybe the weirdest.

clemenza, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)

Shame. The obits are finally showing up.

RIP. Very familiar with his Atlantic output, any recs for the Smash 45s and/or other early cuts?

san lazaro, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

RIP. Two of my favorite discoveries when making my 1975 CDRGO were "King Kong" and "The Berta Butt Boogie." "Whoo-woo-woo-wooo, woo-woo, woo-woo, WHOOoo!"

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

I whipped up a quick Spotify tribute at work. Will clean it up later: RIP Jimmy Castor

san lazaro, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

No Phase Two or Just Begun available on Spotify, though.

san lazaro, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

It's only becoming clear to me right now what a badass this guy was.
He's genuinely funny and funky as hell.

from Shocklee:

'We salute this man for influencing a generation of music fans, b-boys and b-girls and seekers of the beat. Jimmy’s music greatly influenced the beginnings of early hip hop culture and his work has been recognized by many as a significant part of our modern day pop culture history. His second album as part of the group, the Jimmy Castor Bunch and single by the same name, ‘It’s Just Begun’ [1972, RCA] will go down in dancefloor and music sampling history as one of the all-time greats.'

six years pass...

A genuine weirdo, and he recorded better novelty stuff, but his biggest pop hit makes me go ugh.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 01:33 (seven years ago)

His performance on the SOUL show is p incredible, made me a convert

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 01:40 (seven years ago)

That is weird that "It's Just Begun" never charted. Discogs seems to show that in the US it was only on a 1970 single on the Kinetic label (which I've never heard of).
