Just heard about this on another board, no other links as yet. Legendary bassist for Soft Machine if anyone needs to know. He'd been ill for a while so it's not entirely unexpected, but I still feel sad...

Oh man... I couldn't go to his concert in Tallinn a few months ago, just couldn't, as my mother was just coming out of the hospital after a stroke just then... And still I'm feeling awful now.

I'm not that up to date on his later work, but all of that earlier Soft Machine stuff has made a big impact on me so this is truly sad news. will be playin Third soon

RIP mighty bass-player.

damned shame. 1984 is a great album and he was never far from that mark.

have been listening to the first two SM albums for the first time :)

this sucks, as far as I could tell the guy was still making music at a good clip. search the Caveman Hughscore album he did with Seattle folks in the 90's as well.

RIP

Dante ... Bruno . Vico .. Passantino (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 09:43 (sixteen years ago)

Had no idea he was ill. Saw him a few years ago with Charles Hayward and possibly Phil Miller, was still going strong.

Best Soft, Hopper Tunity Box, Parabolic Versions. For these past couple of days I've played these three almost constantly.
Yes, like it was said upthread, HH kept making good music all the time. Though it seems that from 1979-82, or thereabouts, he didn't record or perform for some years, instead doing quite varied odd-jobs -- upon which he later commented in an interview that (I rely on memory here, so it's hardly word for word, but it ran along the lines of) "writing fiction and writing music reviews is basically the same thing".

Reading what other musicians, including Wyatt, have had to say about him, he appears as one of the kindest and sanest personalities, probably one of the most modest also, of that generation.
I only exchanges a few rather short messages with him, and got pretty much a similar impression.
Great guy. R.I.P.

fifteen years pass...

some really good sunday morning music is the 1980 album two rainbows daily that he did with alan gowen. it's got a cloying, but searching quality to it. as it's all duets, alan gowen's array of keyboards take the spotlight as hugh holds down the semblance of a bottom end. it's a very cool kind of jazz+new age+ambient hybrid that reminds me of john martyn's floatier takes of the time, or maybe closer to the various ecm duets records. here's "morning order", famously sampled by dilla for a common beat:

picked up the album on a whim around 20 years ago. i knew soft machine as a band to look out for, but jumped into this album because of the sample and because it was easily available on cd reissue. looking now, it's not on usa spotify, and you can't even hear it in full on youtube! it's a wonderful album, and the reissue i'm listening to has some more freeish live trio recordings as a bonus. it's the only of his non-soft machine stuff i've heard, but i consider it a personal classic.
