Hello! Good evening!
Over dinner my roommate just told me that the band BATTLES recently went to Japan and sold $2,000,000 worth of merch.
Is this possible?
If not, why is he trying to make me so mad?
― A Derek Erdman, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 02:36 (sixteen years ago)
Don't be ridiculous. The Battles broke up in 1970 and half of them are dead.
― packinasnackinthebackoftheac (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)
played in sydney last week. annoying. no way they could sell 2mill dollars. maybe 2mill yen.
― nonightsweats, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 04:36 (sixteen years ago)
That does sound more realistic.
― packinasnackinthebackoftheac (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)
maybe 2 million doll hairs
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)
2 million box
― Mark, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)
saw a lot of people with BATTLES bags and or tees at the Taicoclub festival in Japan the other day. Not 2 million worth tho.

Tell your friend to cite the article he read this in. Until he can provide a reputable, verifiable source you've won the debate.
― filthy dylan, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 05:44 (sixteen years ago)
actually you've both lost in ways you dont yet understand
― uptown churl, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 05:59 (sixteen years ago)
He did not read it in an article, he heard it from "friends".
uptown churl: DUDE, I DON'T LOSE.
― A Derek Erdman, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 07:09 (sixteen years ago)
not completely unthinkable...
battles played providence at as220 in 2007, admission was $6
I was in tokyo later that year, battles was playing and admission was $50
exchange rate lulz

2 mil in t-shirts and CDs is just... a whole lot of t-shirts and CDs.
― ian, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
ARE BATTLES THE CHEAP TRICK OF THE 21ST CENTURY????
― da croupier, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)
assuming they could charge an absurd-in-the-US-tho-maybe-not-in-tokyo $40 per tshirt or cds they would have had to sell 50,000 combined tees & cds
― rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)
This sounds like an intense debate. Better bust out the big guns: tell him that YOUR friends told you they only sold $20,000 in merch. He'll never be able to top that!
― ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)
If things get out of control don't forget that you can always mention what you dad told you, too.
isn't absurd-in-the-US-tho-maybe-not-in-tokyo $80 for a tshirt?
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
I mean, a bowl of noodles will run you $20
well if they sold 25k t-shirts at that price theyd be millionaires twice over, collectively
― rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)
seems like itd be pretty easy for warp records to make 25 thousand tshirts and ship them to japan
it seems like battles is a very japan-friendly band
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)
or japan is a very battles-friendly country
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
maybe there's hope for don cabellero yet
xp Z S: and to end the argument for good, tell your friend you read on the internet that his assertion was RONG!

troll
― cutty, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)
he's not a troll, he's from chicago
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe he meant BEATLES
― Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)
you guys are so naive, battles sold $2 million in t-shirts alone, with CDs and vinyl and battles stocking caps they pulled in $3.5 for the whole tour
― i would never want a book's autograph (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)
i would wear a stocking cap that said BATTLES on it
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)
haha actually that would be dope!
― i would never want a book's autograph (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, dad is dead, thanks.
― A Derek Erdman, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)
holy lord is this a Bearded Men of Space Station 17 reference?
― nabisco, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)
kinda hype for the new one
― adam, Thursday, 17 September 2015 15:49 (nine years ago)
last one was such a bummer. i miss tyondai
― flappy bird, Thursday, 17 September 2015 17:27 (nine years ago)
Yeah I haven't been feeling this band since Tyondai left/got kicked out. Heard the new album on NPR and I find it strangely lifeless.
― ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 18 September 2015 11:24 (nine years ago)
I thought Gloss Drop was better overall than the first. Heard some of the new album, adore the opener, I think it's brilliant.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 18 September 2015 19:35 (nine years ago)
the yabba is pretty sweet. i'm relieved that there are no guest vocalists on the new one
― flappy bird, Friday, 18 September 2015 19:55 (nine years ago)
or any vocals at all.
I don't either way but why are you relieved?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 19 September 2015 15:17 (nine years ago)
i thought the vocals on gloss drop were really out of place. too dry, too high in the mix. love tyondai on mirrored, though. i got the new one yesterday and it's good...still feels like the loss of tyondai kinda crippled them though
― flappy bird, Saturday, 19 September 2015 15:20 (nine years ago)
this is kind of battles by numbers, but that somewhat diminishes how impressive those numbers can be
― Ray Chard (NickB), Friday, 25 September 2015 08:48 (nine years ago)
liked the first one. couldn't get behind gloss drop, but then maybe i didn't give it a good enough go. felt a bit all over the place.
