Why is Indie Rock so impotent and boring right now? (June 2009)

It's either esoteric and wanky or orchestral and folky. I can't be the only one who thinks it's all pretty boring.

Indie Rock: What's Going On?

Mark, Saturday, 13 June 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

We still haven't solved this one, is the thing. After nine years. Are we all just banging our heads against a wall?

Mark, Saturday, 13 June 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

"right now?"

_Rockist__Scientist_, Saturday, 13 June 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

let people have their say, fascist. people need to hear the real news.

special guest appearance (Roberto Spiralli), Saturday, 13 June 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

It's as simple as this. Every 4-5 years, some band somewhere will do something different and then, for the next 4-5 before the next different band comes along, every band everywhere will be doing a variant of that one thing. That's what makes it seem so impotent and boring, and I don't blame the bands because the bands, I'm sure, think they're doing something absolutely magnificent and personally satisfying. It's the media coverage (press/blogs/etc.) that herd the most homogeneous sounding ones to the front of the class and beat us to death with them.

I'm racking my brains to think whether May 2009 was better or worse than June 2009 for the Indie Rock. And April 2009 - wtf was that all about?

we are entering a new age of feel good optimism. indie rock needs more soul.

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 13 June 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

I don't see how anyone needs to do something different.
I don't see how anyone needs to be dangerous

I don't know if current indie is actually any better than indie has used to be (since the mid 90s anyway), but it's all about great tunes anyway, and great tunes occasionally occur in indie. Actually more so than in most other genres.

It's July 2008 in Indie...

President Keyes, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

hum i don't know if you'd called it indie rock, but that dirty projectors album is pretty exciting to these ears o' mine. generally, though, i think that this way of looking at things is pretty wrongheaded. every genre has it's peaks and lows and golden ages and droughts. you could ask "why did all the great hip hop albums come out in the 90s?" and complain about it, or you could just enjoy those albums and listen to either the few great hip hop releases we've seen this decade or get into some other genre which is really killing it.

as long as you pay no attention to english bands indie's not bad at the moment

thomp, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

haha i just noticed the original poster seems to want it to be more generic and indie-rockish

thomp, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

My impression was that as long as you pay no attention to american bands indie's not bad at the moment. I wonder if thomp and I are from opposite countries.

dlp9001, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

i think makeitpop's on to something. people should be listening to 2-step and teen-pop, not boring indie music like coldplay.

anyone heard this 'overload' track? probably single of the year after 'bombs over baghdad'. man i hope gore wins.

i love when people revive these old threads from 2001. what a hoot.

scott seward, Saturday, 13 June 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

If you hang out with the 15-18 year old set you will end up hearing a lot of great indie songwriters. You just have to be selective, I guess. Pick some kid who orders from tape labels. If you work in a record store and you're not grumpy to kids and you're not in some shitty town then you'll never run out of contemporary "indie" songwriter stuff that you'll like (whatever it is you like).

Or you could, you know, be obsessive about reading mp3 music blogs and stuff like that. If you're obsessive and diligent you'll have no problem. It's about how you spend your time! It's some existential bullshit.

In general I'm looking for good orchestral/folky indie. It is hard because I don't give two shits for most of it. I'm listening to an album called 'Return of the Frog Queen' by Jeremy Enigk right now (he's the sunny day real estate guy). This sounds pretty grand so far (granted it is from 1996). Never rule out orchestral and folky even if most of the good finds for me these days are 90s/early 00s.

fucking awesome album. seek out the live session he did for seattle station The End around the same time; it's phenomenal.

I'll check them out. I'm playing their myspace right now, sounds good so far.

I have downloaded lots of music to test out lately, mostly 90's alternative.

I made a pretty good mix March of last year (still streamin') and I want to make another mix this March that incorporates lots of folk rock stuff. I'll try to make it better than last year's mix. And maybe I'll make a straight up 90's alternative mix (of uncommon songs) if I have the time.

Generally, I try to make my mixes/playlists have enough pop in the folky/orchestral songs. Usually I pick songs that have a bit of a bite to them... or otherwise I pick songs that are perfect the way they are or nearly perfect (example: wilco - jesus etc.)

When I make playlists that are straight up indie, rock and pop songs I sort of do the opposite. I pick songs that won't get annoying if I heard them repeatedly (given I don't listen to it 50 times in a row).

I'm an uber nerd when it comes to mix cd/playlilst making. I still feel embarassed over the time in college when I had a non-near-perfect mix cd playing in the background to our volleyball class LOL. (I thought the teacher was only gonna play it for one day. I should of grabbed it and got rid of it)
