i don't have a lot of time for this band, but don't dream it's over is pretty undeniable

Yeah. I don't think it's wrong to say that it's their masterpiece, and I've never gotten tired of it.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

that's the one. there was a time whenever me and my friends been out drinking, and wherever we ended up we always managed to listen to that song. good times.

I'm still annoyed that the song "Recurring Dream" isn't on this.

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 15 June 2009 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

The version of "There Goes God" that they used to do, with "Recurring Dream" in the middle, was a thing of wonder.

"Not the Girl You Think You Are" is one of those rare awesome songs stuffed on the best-of.

"Don't Dream It's Over" is so perfect it even surmounts the production (which was deemed quite radical at the time!), but I've always loved "Into Temptation," too, a different side of Neil Finn.

I love the production. All the From froufrous with which we'd get fairly bored in the next ten years add dimension and pathos; the organ lines are some of my favorite in any pop single, and the carousel swirls punctuating the line "And you turn right over to the TV page" and baroque synth shadowing Finn's solo are apt and restrained.

*Froom

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)

Surmounts in the sense that despite the fact that in every way it's the prototypical "80s" sound, it's somehow not kneecapped by the marshmallow drums and chorused Strat sound. That's not just Froom's froufrous. That was everyone. Most did not fare this well, and that's not thanks to Froom, either. That's thanks to the song which ... surmounts the production.

Don't Dream It's Over is (and I sorta mean this) so perfect it transcends being interesting.

You left off "Weather With You," which is the first track on this comp and would have had my vote. Of what's left: "Pineapple Head"

"Better Be Home Soon," "It's Only Natural," "Something So Strong," and a handful of album tracks ("She Goes On," "Never Be The Same," "Can't Carry On") match that description too, roger.

The collapse of their mainstream US popularity fascinates me. A fervent cult of jus' folks and musicians (Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, Dixie Chicks) keeps Neil Finn going.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 June 2009 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

DDIO is the objective-truth. but i'm afraid it unfairly pegs them to their biggest hit and first album. i've always been a temple of low men devotee, i like the broodiness of it. so i'm voting "better be home soon."

i'd love to hear a really good country singer on "better be home soon." i mean, i like kasey chambers' version, but i'm thinking a nashville dude with a deep ol' voice.

The never got better than "Four Seasons In One Day".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

And the country references in the case of "Better Be Home Soon" are OTM. That is, like, the ultimate country ballad by a non-country act.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

"Distant Sun" my favourite but there's not a lot between most of those songs for me.

I missed this, but my vote for Private Universe wouldn't have changed anything. There's a particularly strong live version of it on one of the cd singles that is soooo good.

Oh..... And the new album is very good. Even better than the surprisingly good comeback three years ago. Neil Finn cannot fail!

that film clip is pretty fab though

Just listened to all of these songs in succession, and I'm now left with a sense of overwhelming blandness. Sorry, Crowded House. I tried, I really did. But you guys make Coldplay actually sound like U2, in comparison.

^^ suggest ban

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, I didn't suggest ban Crowded House, I just turned off the songs when I was done.

Elvis Telecom completely on the money above - I was always really irked that "Recurring Dream" wasn't on this comp, because I liked that song a whole lot.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

Crowded House and Coldplay = both >>>> U2

And U2 are not at all bad.
