00's: The Anti-Hit of the Decade

Come on folks. Let's come up with some big bad alternatives to that Hits thread. If an ideal pop song is at its simplest a short, comprehensible, uniting statement of strict (and strictly catchy) musical principle, then I want songs that are big, dark, terrifying, unprincipled, confrontational bringers of hell.

For example, Kayo Dot's incredible "___on limpid form", whose studio version is a staggering feat of beautiful mind-abuse:

Entries need not be 15+ minutes long. But they gotta hurt.

(That's not the studio version, obviously, but it's almost as good)

This is a much more interesting premise, imo, but the thread should be about finding the biggest hit that shouldn't have been a hit (in the 80s, i assume "O Superman" would win)

Straight-up metal will be deeply frowned upon here. To many ears, metal is pop. It's principled. It isn't really very dark for the most part. In fact, you are encouraged to think well outside the metal and noise boxes.

Tape Store, that element can be explored here for sure! I'm just not sure that much of an O Superman-level artiness has made it remotely near any chart this decade.

Pillbox that is a cool video indeed but perhaps not what I'm looking for here (especially as it seems to be largely improv, but also coz it's a bit uh straight-up free-noise)

Scott I am about to consume those with gleeful abandon :D

Scott Walker - Clara, anyone?

you gotta embrace the improv. i mean, it's the opposite of pop.

the haters!! :D

improv is the opposite of pop, yeh i guess...here i suppose i'm looking for things that are at least constructed, albeit to plans which lie far, far away from pop's rigour, and which use a very open-minded, almost seemingly improvised approach to their construction. but i will totally embrace the improv. bring me more.

oh you brought me more xposts hurrah

Suddenly have an urge to play every single Youtube video in this thread at the same time. Will refrain. Will go to bed. But that Cryonic Chants thing looks really promising. I'll check these all again when I wake.

Quantify "hit"; does something need to have gone top 40?
